Davis, a Lawrence attorney who served a dozen years in the Kansas House, said he was running for Congress to restore bipartisan work ethic to politics of Washington, D.C.
He also questioned why Watkins claimed to be a fan of Donald Trump, but didn’t vote for the GOP nominee in 2016. He said Watkins often bragged about starting a business overseas, but that didn’t match reality. He said Watkins was fond of highlighting Kansas roots, but owns two homes in Alaska and none in Kansas.
“Fellow Republicans have called my opponent, Steve Watkins, a liar, a fraud and a rank opportunist,” Davis said. “We have a broken Congress and we have no choice but to fix it. It starts by sending a proven problem solver to represent us in Washington.”
Watkins, who grew up in Topeka but spent most of the past two decades in college, the U.S. Army or working as a private contractor in overseas, told the KTWU audience in a forum sponsored by the Kansas League of Women Voters that Davis was a career politician using lies to detract from his liberal instincts.
“In the Kansas Statehouse, Paul Davis has racked up an extremely liberal voting record, perfect fit for his district in east Lawrence, but not in line with Kansas 2nd,” Watkins said. “Paul likes tax hikes, abortions and higher spending. He will do everything and anything to detract you from his voting record, and most notably, lying about mine.”
Watkins rejected published reports and Davis’ assertions that he misled people about his role as building an engineering security company in Afghanistan and Iraq
“He lies,” Watkins said.
The only candidate in the Topeka studio who didn’t portray a rival as gigantic fibber — Libertarian Party nominee Kelly Standley — did conclude neither the Republican nor Democratic parties could be trusted to properly represent Kansans.
“The problem we have today is that current representatives choose to represent their party instead of their constituents. It is time to clean the muck out of the swamp,” Standley said.
Voters in the district decide Nov. 6 on a replacement for U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins, a five-term Republican who didn’t seek re-election.

A temporary fence of the type used to restrain livestock went up Thursday on the east side of the Kansas Expocentre along areas designated for demonstrators at the weekend rally with President Donald Trump.
Trump is scheduled to speak at 6:30 p.m. Saturday to thousands at a Make America Great Again rally in Landon Arena, which was named for 1936 Republican presidential nominee Alf Landon. Trump’s visit is part of a national tour to promote Republican candidates heading into mid-term elections in November.
Preparations for the event include logistics of handling people intent on protesting or celebrating outside the arena. That included installation of gating parallel to the sidewalk on a two-block stretch of S.W. Topeka Boulevard.
The enclosure caught two people planning to protest Trump’s policies off guard. Both questioned the necessity of a barrier.
“Only a year ago at a right-wing rally, someone was murdered by a car driver,” said the Rev. Sarah Oglesby-Dunegan. “We now have the potential of hundreds of people being trapped between a wall and high-density traffic. Who thought this was a good idea and approved it?”

President Donald Trump to hold ‘MAGA’ rally October 6 in Topeka for GOP candidates
President Donald Trump will bring his swagger and influence to Topeka next week as part of a national midterm campaign tour in support of Republican candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.
The Make America Great Again rally will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Kansas Expocentre, according to a news release sent to The Topeka Capital-Journal. Neither U.S. senator from Kansas is up for re-election in 2018, but lively races exist for the open 2nd Congressional District seat to be vacated by U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins and with the re-election campaign of U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder in the 3rd District.
Republicans are working to thwart a challenge from Democrats for control of the U.S. House, with a super PAC controlled by House Speaker Paul Ryan earmarking $4 million for attack ads against Democrats in the two Kansas districts.
It will mark the second time Trump has come to Kansas for a rally and his first rally in Topeka since he began his run for president. Trump visited Wichita in March 2016 for the Kansas caucuses.
Trump is expected to discuss the “booming economy that’s lifting up families across Kansas, and the critical importance of protecting and expanding the GOP majorities in the House and Senate,” according to the statement.
The Kansas Democratic Party responded to the news by launching an online drive to raise money from donors, asserting the cash was needed by Democratic candidates confronted with the “full weight of the Trump White House and national Republicans.”
Brad Parscale, a graduate of Shawnee Heights High School, is Trump’s campaign manager and drove the digital push for Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.
“As a Topeka native, I look forward to joining president Trump in my hometown to celebrate the incredible success of the Trump economy that’s delivered new jobs and bigger paychecks across the state,” Parscale said. “This is a great opportunity for Kansans to celebrate the promises made — and kept — by President Donald Trump.”
Michael Glassner, chief operating officer of the Trump for President organization, said Trump would remind Kansas voters of the critical importance of supporting Republican nominees in the November elections. The president easily carried Kansas in the 2016 election.
“President Trump looks forward to celebrating the success of his America First agenda with patriots from my home state of Kansas,” Glassner said.
Trump endorsed Republican Kris Kobach in the state’s upcoming gubernatorial election. Kobach is running against Democrat Laura Kelly, independents Greg Orman and Rick Kloos, and Libertarian Jeff Caldwell.
Kobach hailed Trump’s work to reduce federal taxes and promised to lower the state tax burden if elected governor.
“It has been a great privilege to work with President Trump’s administration as a transition team member and informal adviser, and I look forward to working with him closely when I am governor of Kansas,” Kobach said.
Kelly said that while Kobach devoted himself to gaining Trump’s loyalty, others in the state were working to balance the state budget and finance public education. Her spokeswoman, Johanna Warshaw, said Kobach could “bring in whoever he’d like to try to convince Kansans we need to repeat (former Gov.) Sam Brownback’s failed experiment, but it’s unlikely to work.”
Orman said he would like Trump to take time in Kansas to hear from farmers suffering under the administration’s trade policies.
“President Trump’s trade policies and tariffs are hurting Kansas farmers,” Orman said. “The continuous implementation of Trump’s tariffs have the potential for serious long term negative impact on Kansas farmers.”
Democratic congressional candidate Paul Davis’ spokeswoman echoed Orman’s sentiment about the negative influence of Trump’s tinkering with trade in agricultural goods produced in Kansas, including wheat, sorghum and beef. Davis is campaigning in the 2nd District against Steve Watkins, a Republican.
Watkins said it would be an honor to welcome the Republican president to Topeka.
“President Trump recognizes that this upcoming election and the race for the 2nd District of Kansas, in particular, is critical to the future of our nation and the great state of Kansas. I look forward to meeting President Trump on October 6 and sharing with him my plans to help deliver lower taxes, enhanced border security and higher paychecks for 2nd District residents,” Watkins said.
The president hasn’t endorsed Watkins, but Trump did urge voters to re-elect Yoder, the 3rd District Republican seeking a fifth term against Democrat Sharice Davids.
Expocentre general manager Kellen Seitz confirmed Thursday that the rally was planned. He said any further information would need to come from the White House.
The Topeka Police Department is working with the Secret Service on security measures, police spokeswoman Gretchen Koenen said.
“We feel we are fully prepared to assist in any way necessary,” she said.
Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. for general admission, according to the news release from Trump’s campaign.
Kobach’s news release directed people wanting to attend the rally to request tickets at www.donaldjtrump.com.

Led Zeppelin must go back on trial in a lawsuit that accuses the legendary rock band of ripping off the intro to its rock anthem "Stairway to Heaven" from a little-known 1960s instrumental, a federal appeals court ordered on Friday.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco overturned a 2016 jury verdict that found that the British band did not steal any original music from "Taurus," a 1968 track by the Los Angeles band Spirit.
"Taurus" was written by the late Spirit guitarist Randy Wolfe, better known as Randy California, whose trust brought the copyright infringement lawsuit.
Michael Skidmore, the trustee for Wolfe, has said Led Zeppelin lead vocalist Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page may have been inspired to write 1971's "Stairway" after hearing Spirit perform "Taurus" while the bands toured together in 1968 and 1969. Skidmore has claimed Wolfe never got any credit.
The defendants have said Wolfe was a songwriter for hire who did not have a copyright claim, and that the opening of "Stairway" — a descending chromatic four-chord progression — is a common musical convention that did not deserve copyright protection.
The jury in the 2016 trial found that the two songs were not substantially similar.
But the federal appeals court panel that overturned the 2016 ruling held that parts of the jury instructions in that trial were erroneous and prejudicial. The appeals court also found that the U.S. district court that decided the first trial abused its discretion by not allowing recordings of "Taurus" to be played during the proceedings.

As practicing OB-GYNs at Wichita’s College Hill Obstetrics and Gynecology, they’re used to being called in to deliver babies at all hours.
But that morning, instead of driving to a hospital, they rushed to the Sedgwick County Zoo, where a pregnant 36-year-old Sumatran orangutan, Daisy, was having dangerous birthing complications.
It’s common for zoos to keep non-veterinary doctors on call for emergency situations, but this was the first time in Sedgwick County Zoo history a great ape required a surgical C-section.

An Olathe man running for a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives was arrested Thursday on a charge of election fraud.
Adam T. Thomas, 35, who is the Republican candidate for the 26th District House seat, is charged in Johnson County District Court with election perjury.
A spokeswoman for Kris Kobach, the Kansas Secretary of State who has made fighting supposed voter fraud a central role of his time in office, declined to comment.

A forum for us country folk...
Tell you what folks..I have mixed feelings
living in kansas now..The extremely conservative
attitudes that have the state by the b#$lls wasn't
on my radar growing up...And the reason for
that is that there weren't any attitudes like that
growing up! Sure, people wanted less govt interference,
that's typical for an ag community...And a smaller less
expensive govt along with lower taxes..But you know
something? Even when those things were happening,
we understood the necessity...yes people bitched and
whined about these things when the grew
out of proportion, but they always seemed to be in a
"we'll get it done differently next election" type of
opinion...There wasn't the bickering and downright
dangerous actions by people like nowadays...
People need to grow up....act like adults...
This one has me stumped...
3 - 4 years ago I bought an Acer Aspire..AXC-704G-UW61.
It had windows 10 and it worked lousy...so I put it away and
bought an Acer AXC-603G-UW 30...windows 8.1, Works fine.
So I wanted to fire up the 704G to see what files I might
have created and couldn't get past the windows login
screen..Forgot the password...Tried many ways to get
to a password reset screen...no luck..can't get past the
request for a password..tried to;
No luck...Password reset disk...no luck...Just a screen asking for a psswrd...

Symbicort..
Nasty asthma since getting over the flu back in February..Went to
an asthma/immunologist and they said I needed to start taking
a steroid..and started me on symbicort. They gave me some
samples after I said I couldn't afford it..350 to 400$ for the
160/4.5...I also started going a pulmonary clinic...they agreed
on the need for what they call a controller...I could go a couple
of ways to afford symbicort...enroll in the medicare, plan D...drugs, this
coming october and or try the canadian online drug company's,
which I did...Doc said he has heard favorable reviews from some
of his patients that are doing this too. Guess I will see..
Is anyone taking symbicort or another type of asthma steroid?
Is it helping...I've yet to notice any differences to my breathing
problems...
