Wisconsin Rapids woman wins Wheel of Fortune last night!!!

Congratulations Alex!

I worked with her mom at Renaissance Learning in WI Rapids. Beautiful family!

Chris Kennedy for (sadly) the win.

He might know a thing or two about gun crime.
Chris Kennedy, the son of Robert F. Kennedy, is running for the Democratic nomination for Illinois governor this year. Rep. Jeanne Ives is primarying current Governor Bruce Rauner from the right. And at a candidate forum Monday night, offered her prescription for the problem of guns in Illinois:

The problem is the gun violence in this city of Chicago, predominantly. And you know how youíre going to solve it? Fathers in the home.

The audience booed, and Ives repeated, confidently, ďFathers in the home.Ē

When it was Kennedyís turn to speak, his reply was short and simple: ďWell, I wish I could agree with you. I didnít have a father in my life. Somebody shot him,Ē Kennedy said. And then he got up and left the forum, getting a standing ovation. He hadnít yet reached the age of five when his father was assassinated the night he won the California presidential primary in 1968.

Hell of a way to mark Martin Luther King Day, Rep. Ives. If only heíd had a father to prevent gun violence, too, huh?

As he left the forum, Kennedy said,

You know, some stuff hits a raw nerve and, um, I think that should be a debate about great ideas, a clash, and not one of emotions [Ö]

But when I hear such ignorance and stupidity aired out by someone who knows so little about so much, I donít think thereís an appropriate place for them to be on a podium on a dais with other people who have given these issues thought and have the emotional capacity to be empathetic at the same time.

Kennedy later told the Chicago NBC affiliate,

I lost my father to someone with a gun. For someone to say simply the solution is to have a father-in-law Ė I donít know. How shall I react? What should my family have done?

Clearly, his lack of a strong male role model left him unable to deal with simple facts about guns and character from an upstanding moral scold Republican lady.

Ives scored something of a threefer, since Kennedyís running mate, Ra Joy, had a son murdered with a gun during a mugging, and one of the other Democratic candidates, J.B. Pritzker, also lost his father when he was seven years old, to a heart attack. He stayed at the debate, but told the Chicago Tribune,

I donít know what was going through Chrisís head other than I can only imagine the grief that he feels when he thinks of his fatherís death.

Ives campaign spokesperson Kathleen Murphy later told NBC Chicago that Rep. Ives hadnít meant to offend Kennedy. Honestly, we understand: Itís the sort of little slip thatís just bound to happen when youíre around a guy whose father and uncle were both assassinated by gunmen. You might not mean to tread on sensitive territory, but before you know it youíre just inadvertently mentioning leaving through the kitchen, or chatting casually about the magic bullet theory. These things happen.

But just to live up to Kennedyís point about Ives, Murphy couldnít resist the urge to keep digging, and

reiterated the importance of fathers in domestic life, citing ďsimilar statementsĒ like President Barack Obamaís 2008 Fatherís Day speech at the Apostolic Church of God on Chicagoís South Side. In his speech, the then-candidate said, ďtoo many fathers also are missing ó missing from too many lives and too many homes.Ē

ďThose are President Obamaís words, and that was what she was echoing today,Ē Murphy said. ďShe certainly meant no offense to Mr. Kennedy.Ē

So shut up, youíre not going to turn on your big Democrat hero, The One, are you, huh? We suppose we could point out that while Barack Obama has in fact been roundly criticized for his Cosbyesque pull-your-pants-up-and-be-responsible rhetoric, notably by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Obama never once suggested that missing fathers caused gun violence. He seemed to think that has more to do with guns being insanely easy for people to get their hands on.

Rep. Ives also did her part to make the whole thing worse, telling the Chicago Tribune that she thinks the lack of fathers is one of the main causes of crime, and then veering straight into the personal again:

She went so far as to speculate that the son of Kennedy running mate Ra Joy, who was killed near the University of Chicago in June, was killed by someone who lacked a fatherís influence.

ďIím sure Ra Joy, whoever the perpetrator was against his son, Iím imagining that person also did not have a father figure in the home,Ē Ives said.

She seems nice. Wait, we meant pathologically clueless. As for her little faux pas in suggesting fatherless homes resulted in criminals, Ives explained,

heís obviously very sensitive about (his fatherís death) and I can understand why. Itís horrible. Iíll be honest with you, it didnít even, I didnít connect the two because the two arenít connected.

Yes, she is saying that Kennedy is white. She doesnít have a setting for ďsubtle.Ē

Kennedy said the shitshow of the Republican 2016 primary debates had been part of what motivated him to leave the stage:

ďthe Republican Party allowed Donald Trump to say racist and simplistic things.Ē Kennedy argued that Republicans should have vacated the stage in protest like he did when he heard ďsimplistic solutions to tragic problems.Ē

Sounds good to us. Maybe this will catch on, and the next time Sarah Huckabee Sanders starts lying, the White House press room will just silently file out.

We can dream, canít we?

Subject: Dog Bites 24 People

This is from Facebook and I can't get the photo to upload. If anyone else can, please do, it's hilarious!

With the Olympics approaching

I'm wondering what types of "protests" we can expect from our athletes on the podium? Taking a knee would be fine with me.....

One of the craziest things I've seen....

My area has received at least 6 inches of snow overnight, and it's still falling!

Just saw a guy walking his dog in SHORTS! And no, the dog wasn't the one in shorts!

Welcome to Wisconsin!

This sums it up...

Good People Donít Defend A Bad Man

At times in this life it can be a challenge to figure out who the bad people are, but sometimes they help you.

Sometimes they do the work for you.

Sometimes with their every vulgar, bitter word from their mouth, they testify to their personal malignancy and they make it easy to identify them.

Generally speaking, there are things that good people do and things good people donít do.

Good people donít refer to entire countries as ďshitholesĒómost notably countries that have given birth to our very humanity; ones that for hundreds of years have been colonized and poached and mined of their riches by powerful white men; countries whose people have been enslaved and sold and forced to come and build your country.

Good people by any measurement we might useósimply donít say such things.

Of course good people also donít say they could grab women by the genitalia, either.
They donít defend racists and nazis and call them ďfine people,Ē days after murdering a young girl and terrorizing an American city.
They donít brag about their penis size during debates, or suggest protestors at campaign rallies should be roughed up, or crack jokes about captured war heroes, or make fun of the physically disabled.
They donít.

Good people donít tweet anti-Muslim rhetoric in the moments immediately following a bombing in order to bolster a position.
They donít leave American territories filled with brown skinned people without power for months upon months, after publicly ridiculing their public servants and questioning their peopleís resolve.
They donít erase protections for the water and the air, for the elderly, the terminally ill, the LGBTQ.
They donít take away healthcare from the sick and the poor without an alternative.
They donít gouge the working poor and shelter the wealthy.
They donít abuse their unrivaled platform to Twitter-bait world leaders and to taunt private citizens.
Good people donít prey upon the vulnerable, they donít leverage their power to bully dissenters, and they donít campaign for sexual predators.

But this President is simply not a good human being, and thereís simply no way around this truth.

He is the ugliest personification of the Ugly American, which is why, as long as he is here and as long as he represents this nation, we will be a fractured mess and a global embarrassment. He will be the ever lowering bar of our legacy in the world.

And what is painfully obvious in these moments, isnít simply that the person alleging to lead this country is a terrible human beingóit is that anyone left still defending him, applauding him, justifying him, amening him, probably is too.

At this point, the only reason left to support this President, is that he reflects your hateful heart;he shares your contempt of people of color, your hostility toward outsiders, your ignorant bigotry, your feeling of supremacy.

A white President calling countries filled with people of color shitholes, is so far beyond the pale, so beneath decency, and so blatantly racist that it shouldnít merit conversation. It should be universally condemned. Humanity should be in agreement in abhorring it.

And yet today (like so many other seemingly rock bottom days in the past twelve months) they will be out there: white people claiming to be good people and Christian people, who will make excuses for him or debate his motives or diminish the damage.

They will dig their heels in to explain away or to defend, what at the end of the day is simply a bad human being saying the things that bad human beings say because their hearts harbor very bad things.

No, good people donít call countries filled with beautiful, creative, loving men and women shitholes.

And good people donít defend people who do.

Youíre going to have to make a choice here.
