Sweden formally joins NATO military alliance

Sweden has officially become the 32nd member of NATO after it completed its accession process in Washington.

BBC link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68506223

The handover of documents took place at a ceremony two years after Sweden applied to join the military alliance following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that "unity and solidarity" would be Sweden's "guiding lights".

NATO today "is stronger than ever," US President Joe Biden said. "NATO stands more united, determined, and dynamic" the US leader said, adding that "together with our newest ally Sweden - NATO will continue to stand for freedom and democracy for generations to come."

"This has been a little bit of a road but we've known from day one that we would be here one day," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg posted on X that Sweden brings with it "capable armed forces and a first-class defence industry" and that the alliance had become "stronger and safer".

Sweden applied to join the defence alliance after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 - but its request was blocked by two members. Turkey initially withheld approval in a row over what it called Sweden's support to Kurdish separatists. It eventually lifted its veto in January of this year. Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban accused Sweden of being hostile to it and delayed its approval until last week, when the Hungarian parliament eventually voted to ratify the bid. All NATO members are expected to help an ally which comes under attack.

Welcome Sweden! Or should I say ... Välkommen!

What to know about electronic pollbooks, which Pa. counties use them, and more

Spotlight PA link: https://www.spotlightpa.org/news/2024/03/pennsylvania-electronic-pollbook-voter-registration-election-2024-explainer/

HARRISBURG — As Pennsylvania prepares for the 2024 presidential election, voters may start hearing about a new piece of technology rolling out in more and more counties: electronic pollbooks.

E-pollbooks, as they are commonly called, replace the paper booklets that contain voter registration information that people generally see when they sign in at their polling place on election day. This updated tech doesn’t change the voter experience much. Instead of signing their names in the booklets, voters in counties that use e-pollbooks do the same thing on electronic tablets.

But behind the scenes, the differences are significant.

E-pollbooks make election day operations much easier for poll workers and speed up key processes. But like most election technology, they are potentially vulnerable to hacking if officials do not have safeguards in place. When Lancaster County piloted e-pollbooks last year, poll workers praised them, but at least one county commissioner said he was wary of fully implementing them, in part, because of cybersecurity concerns.
- more at link -

Security is definitely a concern. But my biggest problem with this update is the fact that voters are asked to electronically "sign" the pollbook on the data screen with a wand or a finger. You know, it's like when you electronically sign for your drivers' license? When you use your finger and squiggle a "signature" to authorize an electronic check at the grocery store? To me it's no signature at all, nor is it proof of ID.

When I've gone for my drivers' license renewal I've had to sign that computer screen 5 or 6 times, and it never looks like my real signature. Never! I'm left-handed and those screens are made for right-handed people. The wand that you use to "sign" is nothing like a real pen that I sign on paper with. As a result I cannot use my drivers' license to prove my ID because it looks nothing like my real signature. Luckily I have a US Passport which I use to prove my ID, always.

The electronic signature screens are terrible innovation and they can lead to voter fraud/abuse down the line. It's one more reason why I will continue to vote by mail and not in person, for as long as I live in Pennsylvania.

Today's Tiedrich rant: if I wrote Joe Biden's State of the Union speech

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/if-i-wrote-joe-bidens-state-of-the-6ac

Madam Vice President, Mister Weird-Ass Porn-Obsessed Speaker, our First Lady and Second Gentleman, members of Congress and the Cabinet, Justices of the Supreme Court, my fellow Americans —

now, before we start: hey Marjorie Three Toes — try to keep your braying to a minimum. this is supposed to be a solemn occasion. and you, Handy Oakley — try not to fall out of your dress. this isn’t Beetlejuice the Musical. both of you, sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up. nobody wants to see a repeat of your disgraceful behavior from previous years. you’re government officials and grown adults. it’s time to act like it.

ok, on with the show. the state of our union is … pretty fucking awesome.

three years ago, I inherited an utter shit-show. the worst pandemic in a century. the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War....

Oh my gosh I love this! Jeff Tiedrich spins out a huge amount of praise for Joe Biden's accomplishments. And I agree, this would be an awesome State of the Union speech. Let's see if this lines up with Biden's address to the nation tonight.

'No Nukes' Jackson Browne and Graham Nash Sign Open Letter Warning of Nuclear Weapons

Rolling Stone link: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/no-nukes-jackson-browne-graham-nash-open-letter-nuclear-weapons-1234982324/

Jackson Browne and Graham Nash — co-founders of the Musicians United for Safe Energy and the famed No Nukes concert in 1979 — are among the artists, actors, and advocates who have signed an open letter warning of the dangers of nuclear weapons.

Annie Lennox, The China Syndrome‘s star and producer Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas, Julianne Moore, Bill Nye, and more also put their names to the Make Nukes History open letter, which is tied to Oppenheimer and its expected award windfall at the Oscars this weekend.

“Oppenheimer depicts the origin story of nuclear weapons, the history of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Oppenheimer’s subsequent warnings against an arms race and the development of even more powerful weapons,” the open letter states. “Oppenheimer was right to warn us. Today, 13,000 nuclear weapons are held by nine countries. Some are 80 times more powerful than the ones that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.”

The open letter, put out by the Nuclear Threat Initiative, was also signed by Christoph Waltz, Lily Tomlin, Viggo Mortensen, Rosanna Arquette, Alan Cumming, Ellen Burstyn, and Charles Oppenheimer, the grandson of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Yeah that photo is almost 30 years old, and Jackson Browne is completely gray now, but the sentiment hasn't changed in all these years. This is a smart move to take advantage of the Oppenheimer movie publicity.

Today's Tiedrich rant: not-so-super Tuesday: Donald Trump remains weak, vulnerable and dumb as fuck

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/not-so-super-tuesday-donald-trump

Super Tuesday has come and gone. yesterday, 16 states held their primaries, and today’s headlines are going to be all about how Day One Dipshit fucking crushed it. don’t fall for it.

while the mainstream media continues to play its Joe Biden is old and icky and UGH why doesn’t he just quit already games, only Fox News seems willing to address the demented elephant in the room.

“you look at the exits for GOP voters tonight who won’t guarantee their vote for the nominee. North Carolina, 35%, Virginia 36%, California 33%. that has been consistent, 30–50% of people who don’t want Trump but identify as Republican or are voting in that primary.”

Donny is in a shitload of trouble — and not just the "please Letitia don’t seize my golf motels" kind. there are just too many No Fucking Way Republicans who can’t stomach the idea of ever voting for a demented dictator wanna-be facing four criminal trials.

Pa. pays property owners for land lost to eminent domain, but farmers want more for their loss

Spotlight PA link: https://www.spotlightpa.org/statecollege/2024/03/pennsylvania-farmers-agriculture-eminent-domain-penndot-route-322-centre-county/

BELLEFONTE — A massive highway project in Centre County that will likely result in some farmers losing their properties has prompted calls to update how agricultural land is valued in Pennsylvania’s eminent domain process.

The government uses the legal procedure to take private land for public uses like road and bridge construction, parks, and other developments with community benefits. Advocates within the state’s agriculture sector argue that farmers are short-changed by the process, which requires compensation based on market value, payment for possible damages, and relocation support. They say that state law — which caps relocation support for farms and small businesses at $25,000 — doesn’t accurately reflect the financial burden of moving to a new place. Plus, farmers say that the final offer for a property doesn’t account for fertile soil or product reliability.

Over the past decade, cropland prices have increased, costing more than $8,620 per acre in Pennsylvania, a number that may be higher or lower depending on the county. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture data, the number of farms in Pennsylvania has also declined, drawing concern from industry officials and policymakers about protecting a sector that generates billions of dollars for the state’s annual economy....

Responding to concerns and frustration over eminent domain, state Sen. Cris Dush (R., Jefferson) has proposed updating the law to include payments for “lost goodwill” — which he defines as a farm’s location, community history, and reputation for producing crops — when determining a farm’s value.
- more at link -

This is a complex issue for farm families, because you can't just pick up your farm and move it to a new location. In the city a family can sell their house and move to another house away from the highway. But farms take an entire generation to develop and improve the soil and water for best conditions. Even when the farmer is correctly and fairly compensated for his land, it still may mean the end of his farming career.

Pa. was deluged by election lawsuits in 2020. Experts say 2024 will be even more intense.

Mailed ballots at center of 2024 election lawsuits in PA

Spotlight PA link: https://www.spotlightpa.org/news/2024/03/pennsylvania-election-2024-lawsuits-mail-ballots-voter-registration-joe-biden-donald-trump-josh-shapiro/

HARRISBURG — Earlier this year, a group of Republican state lawmakers filed suit in federal court to throw out executive actions aimed at expanding voter registration, claiming the legislature’s constitutional right to determine how presidential elections are run in Pennsylvania had been violated.

Election experts, lawyers, and others called the suit the first salvo in what is expected to be another year of high-stakes court battles in Pennsylvania, a swing state that four years ago helped decide the nail-biting race between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

With a Biden-Trump rematch likely in November, new challenges are expected to target everything from the legality of drop boxes to what constitutes a valid mail ballot. One case involving mail ballots that a voter fails to date or misdates has the potential to land before the U.S. Supreme Court. ...

Elected officials, activists, and others say this potentially crowded litigation landscape could have easily been prevented if, as they have been urging for more than three years, the state legislature had clarified portions of Pennsylvania’s landmark 2019 law that ushered in voting by mail. But the General Assembly, bogged down by partisan disagreements fueled by Trump’s relentless attacks on mail ballots and unfounded claims of election fraud, has failed to strike a consensus on making those changes.

The Repukes will do anything to deny our ballots, especially our MAILED ballots!

Pennsylvania voters - please be sure to sign and date your mail ballot envelopes strictly according to the printed instructions. Any unsigned or incorrectly signed or dated ballot envelopes will create more fodder for the Repukes' arguments.

Controversy Grows Over PVA ["Biodegradable"] Detergent Pods

NYC Exploring a Ban on PVA Detergent Pods As Research Indicates False Biodegradable Claims from Manufacturers

DC Report link: https://www.dcreport.org/2024/03/03/controversy-grows-over-pva-detergent-pods/

As you might have seen recently, there is a growing controversy over those convenient little detergent pods that so many of us use to wash our clothes and dishes.

What’s the big deal? In short, PVA – or polyvinyl alcohol – is plastic. While it’s a material we all use, it’s also marketed within the pod industry as being eco-friendly, biodegradable and even all natural. The plastic, PVA coating on the pods holds the detergent and dissolves away once it makes contact with water, thus releasing the detergent from within.

“The concern begins when we ask what happens to that plastic coating,” says Dr. Charlie Rolsky, co-author of the study that has sparked the controversy and executive director of the Shaw Institute, in Blue Hill, Maine. “PVA is water soluble, just like sugar or salt, which once added to water, disappears in time, but as we can taste, still very much remains within the water itself. The same is true of PVA.”

Forbes, Bloomberg, Fast Company, The Washington Post and many other large media outlets have been reporting on this for nearly two years, as Rolsky’s study suggests that manufacturers of PVA detergent pods are falsely claiming them to be biodegradable and/or “eco-friendly.”

Today's Tiedrich rant: dumb-ass Trumpers are getting scammed by grifters selling fake money

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/dumb-ass-trumpers-are-getting-scammed

if some skeevy dude sidled up to you on the street, offered to sell you Biden Bucks and told you they’d make you rich, you’d roll your eyes. “no, seriously,” you’re told. “Joe Biden’s going to change the banking system, and these Biden Bucks are going to be worth millions.”

at that point, you’d tell them to fuck straight off. all of which makes you smarter than a Trump cultist. it’s a wise old saying: a Trump supporter and his money are soon parted. Donny’s been hip to this for years. there’s no end to the cheesy grifts he uses to separate the rubes from their social security checks.

Screenshot:

remember those idiotic NFT trading cards, the childish JPEGs depicting Trump as Superman, a cowboy, and Elvis? Trump harvested millions in cash from selling them to credulous dopes. you’ll be shocked to learn they’re now worthless. ...

which brings us to Trump Bucks. nitwits have been shelling out thousands of dollars for these worthless items, because they’ve been sold a fantasy.

Quote:
Supporters are told Trump Bucks will propel Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid and make the “real patriots” who support him rich when he wins and they can cash in. How would it work? According to NBC News, those who got duped believe Trump, when he is re-elected, will institute a new monetary system that will make Trump Bucks valuable.

oh, for fuck’s sake.

It's another great rant by Jeff Tiedrich.

Also Tiedrich says more on Chump's gibberish language, called "phonemic paraphrasing" by some experts. It's a sign of dementia and Chump is showing it regularly during his rally speeches. He can't think of the right word so he makes up a word that sounds like it means the same thing. This has been remarked on by Chump's critics (including Tiedrich) but it's almost never mentioned in the news media. They gloss over it, or they edit it out in their regular reporting.

Tiedrich's point is that the media keeps harping on "Joe Biden's age" non-issue, but they completely ignore the obvious signs of dementia shown by Chump.

Reuters: US carries out first airdrop of aid into Gaza, officials say

Reuters link: https://www.reuters.com/world/us-carries-out-first-airdrop-aid-into-gaza-officials-say-2024-03-02/

WASHINGTON, March 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. military on Saturday carried out its first airdrop of humanitarian aid into Gaza, two U.S. officials said. The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the airdrop was carried out using three C-130 planes. One of the officials said more than 35,000 meals were airdropped.

The White House has said the airdrops will be a sustained effort, and that Israel was supportive of the airdrops.

Other countries including France, Egypt and Jordan have carried out airdrops of aid into Gaza. At least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip - one quarter of the enclave's population - are one step from famine, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

With people eating animal feed to survive and medics saying children are dying from malnutrition and dehydration, the U.N. has said it faces "overwhelming obstacles" getting in aid.

About FakeNoose

Hey DU friends! Baby boomer here. I became a voter in 1972 when I turned 21, and I've been voting regularly ever since. For a long time I remained independent - always voting for Dem candidates. However that changed in 2008 when I wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton for President. But I live in Pennsylvania where we have closed elections, and my only chance to vote for Hillary was in the Dem primary. So I joined the Democratic Party in 2008, voted for Hillary, and I've never looked back. Barack Obama won the primary in Pennsylvania, as ell as most other states, and I supported him in the general election. It was a different story in 2016 .... You'll never convince me that Chump didn't CHEAT his way into the White House. The worst 4 years in the history of our country ensued, 2017 to 2020, and the first few days of 2021. We all lived through it and i don't need to explain it now. My goal is to make sure that Chump NEVER gets elected to ANYTHING again. Not even Dogcatcher of West Palm Beach FL. Whether he goes to prison is not up to me - but he must be CONVICTED of his crimes and PREVENTED from running for office again. Better yet - he should be in prison or six-feet-under. You get me? I love the cooperation, optimism and can-do spirit of Democratic Underground. We're a community of liberal-minded Americans and we know how to share our stories constructively and pro-actively. Let's all pitch in and get this job done. There has never been a more important election that right now, this year. Democrats everywhere MUST WIN. Joe Biden must win FOUR MORE YEARS!
