Democrats keep Pennsylvania House majority, positioning party to prevent limits on abortion rights

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Democrats maintained their narrow Pennsylvania House majority Tuesday by winning a special election and along with it continued control over how the chamber will handle abortion, gun rights and election law legislation.

Heather Boyd won a seat in the Philadelphia suburbs, beating Republican Katie Ford for a vacancy created by the resignation of Democratic Rep. Mike Zabel. Zabel quit the Legislature in March, shortly after a lobbyist accused him of sexually harassing her.

Boyd is a former congressional and state legislative aide. Her district was once Republican but has given solid margins to Democratic candidates in recent elections. Her win gives Democrats 102 seats, the minimum needed to control the agenda in the 203-member House. The state Senate has a Republican majority.

The Democrats’ victory in the Delaware County district means first-term Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro will have at least one chamber to aid his agenda going into the final month of budget negotiations. The result could also affect a proposed constitutional amendment limiting abortion rights that legislative Republicans are one House floor vote away from putting before voters as a referendum.

Congratulations Heather Boyd, and ALL Pennsylvania Democrats!

Pa. could get an earlier presidential primary -- if other election fights don't get in the way

Partisan disagreements have stalled many other proposed election law changes, and lawmakers sometimes have tied issues together.

(link) https://www.post-gazette.com/news/politics-state/2023/05/08/pa-2024-presidential-primary-date-harrisburg-election-reform/stories/202305050110

HARRISBURG — Top lawmakers in both parties want to prevent a proposal to change the date of Pennsylvania’s presidential primary from getting tangled up with other election-related issues that have long been subjects of partisan bickering.

Current law sets the state’s 2024 primary on April 23, relatively late in the national primary calendar and also in conflict with the first full day of Passover. Gov. Josh Shapiro and many lawmakers want to change that to avoid the conflict with the Jewish holiday, and many also want to give Pennsylvania more national clout with an earlier nominating contest.

A new bipartisan bill being considered in the state Senate would shift the primary from the fourth Tuesday in April to the third Tuesday in March. But partisan disagreements have stalled many other proposed election law changes over the last few years, and lawmakers sometimes have tied issues together.

Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward, R-Westmoreland, said Friday that the date-change proposal should be kept separate from more contentious issues, such as stricter voter ID requirements and allowing for the earlier processing of mail ballots.

Editorial: Pa. higher education pact is a hopeful sign for State System

(link) https://www.post-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2023/05/06/state-system-higher-education-community-college-transfer-pennwest/stories/202305010010

As the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education continues to reimagine its role in the 21st century economy, a pact with Pennsylvania community colleges points in the right direction.

The future of institutions like Slippery Rock University and the new PennWest isn’t in competing with big universities like Pitt, or boutique liberal arts colleges like Allegheny, Washington or Jefferson: It lies in providing an alternative to expensive degrees with declining real-world payoff. That means training the next generation of skilled workers — including teachers, nurses, and law enforcement officers — the commonwealth will need to avoid stagnation and decline.

The pipeline between the commonwealth’s 15 community colleges and 10 State System universities is already strong: In the last five years, over 12,000 students transferred from the two-year institutions to the four-year ones. As more and more young people and their families seek an education that will provide marketable skills without a six-figure debt load, that number should rise. Making that transfer as seamless as possible makes sense.

The agreement stipulates that a graduate of any of the state’s community colleges is guaranteed admission to a State System institution, which enhances the appeal of each: The two-year schools become a clearer path to a full college education, and the state’s four-year schools become a more appealing option for community college students.

HelloFresh Recipe: Pork Sausage Rigatoni in a Cream Sauce

Hi my fellow cooking enthusiasts:
I'm sharing some of my favorite recipes from HelloFresh. They're a company that ships all the ingredients for a gourmet meal to your home along with the instructions on how to make it. I have a lot of great recipes that I want to share. If you purchase your own ingredients (or improvise) according to the list, you can make this yourself with awesome results. The meal kits are all for 2 (or 4 )portions, but you can revise it to whatever number you need. since I'm a single woman I will often have enough leftovers for one or 2 more meals. For this kit I made it with hot Italian sausage, but the sweet version would work just as well.

Or you can download the PDF here: https://www.mediafire.com/file_premium/q7k42601mztxga9/Pork_Sausage_Rigatoni_in_a_Creamy_Sauce.pdf/file

EDIT TO ADD: This can also be made with chicken cutlets

If you don't have penne on hand, I suppose any good pasta will do.

Let me know what you think!

Pro-Trump group wants to kick Prince Harry out of the country

(link) https://www.rawstory.com/prince-harry-2659936063/

A pro-Trump think tank is pushing for the release of Prince Harry’s immigration records, with the goal of getting him kicked out of the country over his admitted use of drugs in the past, The Independent reported.

The right-wing Heritage Foundation filed a suit this Monday against the Department of Homeland Security, arguing that Harry's immigration records be released. It claims he should not be allowed the protections of privacy laws because of the “immense public interest” in his current status.

The suit comes just over a month after the group made a Freedom of Information Act request for information on how Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were admitted into the US.

According to the group, Harry's admissions of drug use in his memoir make him inadmissible to the U.S.

AOC endorsed Helen Gym for Philly mayor, becoming the latest national figure to back her candidacy

(link) https://www.inquirer.com/politics/election/helen-gym-aoc-endorsement-philly-mayors-race-20230501.html

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday endorsed Helen Gym for Philadelphia mayor, becoming the latest in a string of celebrities and Democrats with national profiles to back her candidacy. “Helen isn’t afraid to take on tough fights or go up against big special interests,” Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) said in a statement. “And when she does, she wins.”

In a statement, Gym said she was “honored” to receive the endorsement, saying, “From Philly to New York to Chicago, a bold grassroots movement grounded in meeting people’s basic needs is sweeping the country.”

Gym, who has before been compared to Ocasio-Cortez, has amassed a handful of endorsements from progressives across the country, including Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. She’s also been endorsed by U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D., N.Y.) and U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D., Mass.), who are Ocasio-Cortez’ fellow members of “the Squad,” a group of left-leaning lawmakers in Congress.

And she’s won the backing of a few celebrities from outside Philadelphia, including actor and longtime environmental activist Mark Ruffalo and actress Jane Fonda, whose climate-change focused political action committee contributed to Gym’s campaign.

About FakeNoose

Hey DU friends! Baby boomer here. I became a voter in 1972 when I turned 21, and I've been voting regularly ever since. For a long time I remained independent - always voting for Dem candidates. However that changed in 2008 when I wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton for President. But I live in Pennsylvania where we have closed elections, and my only chance to vote for Hillary was in the Dem primary. So I joined the Democratic Party in 2008, voted for Hillary, and I've never looked back. Barack Obama won the primary in Pennsylvania, as ell as most other states, and I supported him in the general election. It was a different story in 2016 .... You'll never convince me that Chump didn't CHEAT his way into the White House. The worst 4 years in the history of our country ensued, 2017 to 2020, and the first few days of 2021. We all lived through it and i don't need to explain it now. My goal is to make sure that Chump NEVER gets elected to ANYTHING again. Not even Dogcatcher of West Palm Beach FL. Whether he goes to prison is not up to me - but he must be CONVICTED of his crimes and PREVENTED from running for office again. Better yet - he should be in prison or six-feet-under. You get me? I love the cooperation, optimism and can-do spirit of Democratic Underground. We're a community of liberal-minded Americans and we know how to share our stories constructively and pro-actively. Let's all pitch in and get this job done. There has never been a more important election that right now, this year. Democrats everywhere MUST WIN. Joe Biden must win FOUR MORE YEARS!
