Tiedrich rant: yesterday was a damned good day for justice

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/yesterday-was-a-damned-good-day-for

yesterday, several delightfully-satisfying pieces fell into place, as many of the people responsible for the 2020 post-election trumpfuckery finally started learning what consequences look like.

you’ll recall how the Arrogant Dipshit Brothers, Mark Meadows and Jeffrey Clark, tried to pull their “yeah sorry, we’re just not into being arrested” act. Fani “Yours In Service” Willis was having none of it. she wrote,

Defendant Jeffrey Bossert Clark has moved this Court for an Emergency Motion to Stay the pending State court criminal proceedings against him based on an apparent misread of the applicable statutes, a misapprehension of the binding caselaw, and a fundamental misunderstanding of criminal procedure—both state and federal.

misreading and misunderstanding the law — that sounds about right for the oil spill lawyer whom Trump wanted to make his Attorney General.

'A barrage of gunfire': Police respond to active shooting in Pittsburgh's Garfield neighborhood

Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Hundreds of law enforcement officers are responding to an active shooting situation in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood, and residents are being warned to stay away.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said to avoid the 4800 block of Broad Street and North Mathilda Street in Garfield. The area is near Allegheny Cemetery and around the corner from Children’s Hospital in a busy corridor of Penn Avenue.

Allegheny County Sheriff’s deputies went to a residence to serve an eviction notice when the suspect began shooting, sheriff’s office spokesman Mike Manko said. A sergeant leading the incident suffered a minor injury while avoiding the gunfire, Mr. Manko said. The sergeant was not shot.

Law enforcement officials were trying to get people in the area safely evacuated from their homes. Hundreds of shots had been ringing out in the area starting around 11 a.m., and the shooting continued into the early evening.

So it's 4:30 p.m. and right now, it's raining in Pittsburgh. I haven't heard an update with news about victims injured or dead. This is a densely populated area of the city, so any random shooting in this neighborhood could cause problems.

Tiedrich rant: Mark Meadows: poster boy for the entitled male dipshit

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/mark-meadows-poster-boy-for-the-entitled

Mark Meadows, you had one fucking job: get your stupid co-conspirator ass down to Georgia by the 25th of August and surrender yourself to the authorities.

but Mark Meadows is an entitled male dipshit and so he thinks that being booked in some dingy Atlanta jailhouse is beneath him.

Mark believes what so many entitled dipshit criminals believe: my crimes aren’t really crimes, and therefore, Fani Willis has no business prosecuting me for them. check and mate!

Meadows wants his case moved to federal court where he thinks his my crimes aren’t really crimes strategy will have a better chance of success (spoiler alert: nah, bro), and so he wants Willis to give him a free pass on Friday’s booking deadline.

I think Fani Willis has the warrants already written up, just in case he doesn't show.

PA Gov. Josh Shapiro will headline New Hampshire Democrats' convention on Sept. 30

Philly Inquirer link: https://www.inquirer.com/politics/clout/josh-shapiro-new-hampshire-presidential-primary-20230822.html

Gov. Josh Shapiro has batted back questions about his national political aspirations in his first eight months on the job, saying he’s focused on being governor. But he’s also leaning into the kind of brand-burnishing opportunities that a future presidential candidate might seize. Next month Shapiro will headline a convention of New Hampshire Democrats, his first trip as governor to the early voting state known to court potential presidential nominees.

New Hampshire’s Democratic Party described the Sept. 30 gathering at Bedford High School as “a premier Democratic political event in the country,” in a release announcing Shapiro’s appearance. “Every national Democratic leader in the last 50 years has spoken at a NHDP convention, attracting sitting presidents, vice presidents, potential presidential candidates, every chairman of the Democratic National Committee and other notable national leaders.”

Shapiro will talk about his campaign and beating state Sen. Doug Mastriano ahead of New Hampshire’s own battle for an open gubernatorial seat next year. The New Hampshire governor’s race is widely viewed to be one of the most competitive in the nation.

“In Pennsylvania, we defeated extremism and showed the rest of the country what it looks like to come together behind a vision for a better future — one where we create real opportunity while defending our rights and advancing real freedom for all.” Shapiro said in a release. “New Hampshire voters face a similar choice next November. ... I’m grateful for the opportunity to speak to Granite Staters at this critical time for both New Hampshire and our nation’s future.”

Our Governor Josh Shapiro will say great things about President Joe Biden, I'm sure. He's always willing to help other Dem candidates and he gives exciting campaign speeches.

PA Supreme Court says state police can't hide how it monitors social media

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette link: https://www.post-gazette.com/news/crime-courts/2023/08/22/pennsylvania-supreme-court-police-social-media-monitor-policy/stories/202308220089

This is a breaking Associated Press story.

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania's Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state police can't hide from the public its policy on how it monitors social media. Advocates for civil liberties cheered the decision. The law enforcement agency had argued that fully disclosing its policy for using software to monitor online postings may compromise public safety.

All four Democratic justices supported the majority decision, which said the lower Commonwealth Court went beyond its authority in trying to give the state police another attempt to justify keeping details of the policy a secret. Tuesday's order appears to end a six-year legal battle. A state police spokesperson said the agency is reviewing the court decision.

Andrew Christy, a lawyer with the ACLU of Pennsylvania, said the ruling “sort of puts law enforcement on the same playing field as all government agencies. If they have a legal justification to keep something secret, then they have to put forth sufficient evidence to justify that.”

People need to know what police are doing in order to decide if it's appropriate, he argued.

Sandra Bullock Reportedly Feels The Blind Side Is 'Tainted,' But Here's Why She Is Not

The Root link: https://www.theroot.com/report-sandra-bullock-feels-the-blind-side-is-tainted-1850759247

The scandal surrounding former NFL player Michael Oher and his “adoptive” parents Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy has led to a closer examination of The Blind Side, the movie based on their story. In the film, Michael is presented as a foster child with no family and a dangerous, uncertain future until the Tuohys take him in, because they’re just good, honest Christians. It really lays on the white savior tropes, which is a favorite of the Oscar voters.

Superstar actress Sandra Bullock was widely praised for her performance as Leigh Anne, and swept through awards season, winning nearly every Best Actress honor. By the time the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010 came along, she was a lock to win the Best Actress Oscar. But the lawsuit between Oher and the Tuohys has left that win with an asterisk next to it.

- snip -

Some people are calling for the Bird Box actress to return her Oscar. Let me be clear, there’s no reason for Sandra Bullock to give up her award. Plenty of actors have won for playing dishonest characters, so she shouldn’t be punished for someone else’s faults. Plus, if we’re taking back Oscars, there’s a long list of problematic men we need to start with. If the lawsuit proves that Michael is telling the truth about the Tuohys, and they knowingly misrepresented themselves as the people who saved his life, when they were actually the ones who stole from him, I’m not sure it makes much difference where Bullock or her Oscar are concerned. Let’s be honest, if they didn’t strip Will Smith of his Academy Award after he slapped the hell out of Chris Rock during the ceremony, they’re not going after hers.

There’s a reason movies like this say they’re “based on a true story.” What those words actually mean is “we’ve taken a lot of dramatic license with this boring life story, so only a small part of it is actually true.” Yes, there’s a big jump between adding a speech into a scene and completely rewriting the facts, but the most that will come out of this is The Blind Side being taken out of rotation on TNT. And don’t bet against the Academy awarding Bullock with another Oscar, just so this one can be negated.

Senators Casey & Fetterman are urging Norfolk Southern to join feds' close call reporting system

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette link: https://www.post-gazette.com/news/politics-nation/2023/08/21/casey-fetterman-norfolk-southern-close-call-report/stories/202308210087

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman are pressing Norfolk Southern to join a federal rail safety program that the company said it would join more than four months ago, after one of its freight trains derailed in East Palestine, Ohio in February.

The Federal Railroad Administration’s Confidential Close Call Reporting System allows employees to report near-misses or close calls on railroads and protects them from discipline for reporting such incidents.

Norfolk Southern said in March that it was engaged in a working group on the program and planned to join, noting it would build on its own close-call reporting system and mark “another step we are taking to further our commitment to safety,” according to CEO Alan Shaw.

But the senators, both Pennsylvania Democrats, say the Atlanta-based company hasn’t met its pledge. In a letter to Mr. Shaw, they called the FRA’s close call reporting system “a promising program with real potential to improve rail safety, protect employees, and reduce incidents if adopted by a larger swath of the rail industry.”

My daughter was killed by a hit-and-run. A simple step makes it easier to catch drivers who flee

Philadelphia Inquirer link: https://www.inquirer.com/opinion/commentary/jay-alert-pennsylvania-bill-senator-anthony-williams-20230821.html

On Nov. 18, 2016, my daughter, Jayanna Powell, was killed by a hit-and-run driver. She was 8 years old.

My four children were walking home from school around 3 p.m. when Paul Woodlyn III drove around a stopped trolley car at North 63rd Street and Lansdowne Avenue and hit two of them: Jayanna and her brother Hassan Cox, 12, who had been holding her hand. Jayanna was thrown 100 feet in the air; she died later that day at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Hassan suffered injuries to his leg.

Woodlyn fled the scene. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Crash Investigation Division found that there were no tire marks on the roads, indicating that the driver didn’t even try to stop.

- snip -

After running into my children in broad daylight, Woodlyn took his vehicle to an auto body shop in Chester County. His girlfriend, who dropped off the car at the body shop, said that the damage to the car happened when it hit a deer. When the owner of the auto body shop saw the news reports of the fatal crash, he reported the vehicle and the suspect to authorities. If that shop owner hadn’t seen the news, we might never have found my daughter’s killer. A matter this important shouldn’t be left up to chance.

This is a worthy proposal, and it should be turned into a state program for reporting possible hit-and-run drivers. If Amber Alerts can help nail kidnapping child abusers, then this "Jay Alert" can help too.

Tiedrich rant: don't give me any bullshit about how unfairly Donald Trump is being treated

Link: https://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/dont-give-me-any-bullshit-about-how

Donald Trump was indicted in Manhattan on 35 felony counts of business fraud. he was driven by motorcade to his arraignment where he pleaded not guilty and was released without bail. he was not handcuffed or fingerprinted, nor were mug shots taken. afterwards, Trump held a rally.

Kalief Browder was a 16-year-old kid from the Bronx. he was accused of stealing a backpack. cops arrested him, handcuffed him and took him to jail, where he was fingerprinted and photographed. at his arraignment, he pleaded not guilty. he was denied bail and was sent to Rikers Island to await trial.

Donald Trump was indicted in Florida on 40 felony counts of stealing classified documents and hiding them in the unspeakably ugly bathroom of his shitty vermin-infested Florida golf motel. he flew in his private jet to Palm Beach, where again he was driven by motorcade to his arraignment. again, he pleaded not guilty, and again he was neither handcuffed nor fingerprinted. no mug shots were taken, and he was released without bail. afterwards, he went on TV to whine about it.

after arriving at Rikers Island, Kalief Browder spent the next three years there — two of them in solitary confinement — waiting for a trial that never came. surveillance footage shows Kalief being beaten by both corrections officers and fellow prisoners. trial dates were set, and then postponed, and then set again, and then postponed again and again — for three years.

New bills would let Pennsylvania local governments hire firms as managers

Spotlight PA link: https://www.spotlightpa.org/statecollege/2023/08/pennsylvania-legislature-local-government-management/

Local governments in Pennsylvania might soon have the option to hire professional firms to be municipal managers, a change that proponents say could improve local government services while saving taxpayers money.

Three sets of bills in the legislature would amend the governing laws for Pennsylvania boroughs, second class townships, and third class cities — classified by population sizes — and provide an alternative municipal management option. First class townships have had the choice since 2020.

Under current law, Pennsylvania municipalities can only appoint individuals as managers, a rule that state Rep. Bob Freeman (D., Northampton) said can be particularly burdensome for smaller communities that are unable to pay the salary and benefits of a full-time administrator or manager on their own.

The change would allow municipalities to hire a range of professional groups to serve as managers, said Freeman, a prime sponsor for one of the bills. The option also would address increased costs and a shortage of municipal managers that have made hiring difficult, he added.

I'm not aware of any "first class townships" in Pennsylvania that have already taken this step. Can anyone enlighten us? If you know of any PA township that's currently being run by a professional management group, please post it here.

About FakeNoose

Hey DU friends! Baby boomer here. I became a voter in 1972 when I turned 21, and I've been voting regularly ever since. For a long time I remained independent - always voting for Dem candidates. However that changed in 2008 when I wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton for President. But I live in Pennsylvania where we have closed elections, and my only chance to vote for Hillary was in the Dem primary. So I joined the Democratic Party in 2008, voted for Hillary, and I've never looked back. Barack Obama won the primary in Pennsylvania, as ell as most other states, and I supported him in the general election. It was a different story in 2016 .... You'll never convince me that Chump didn't CHEAT his way into the White House. The worst 4 years in the history of our country ensued, 2017 to 2020, and the first few days of 2021. We all lived through it and i don't need to explain it now. My goal is to make sure that Chump NEVER gets elected to ANYTHING again. Not even Dogcatcher of West Palm Beach FL. Whether he goes to prison is not up to me - but he must be CONVICTED of his crimes and PREVENTED from running for office again. Better yet - he should be in prison or six-feet-under. You get me? I love the cooperation, optimism and can-do spirit of Democratic Underground. We're a community of liberal-minded Americans and we know how to share our stories constructively and pro-actively. Let's all pitch in and get this job done. There has never been a more important election that right now, this year. Democrats everywhere MUST WIN. Joe Biden must win FOUR MORE YEARS!
