The Investigation Continues: Chaffetz Posts Online After Shaking Hillary Clintons Hand

Despite their past differences, President Trump took a moment today to honor Hillary Clinton and offer some words of graciousness.

Clinton, of course, attended the inauguration today, and as she headed out of the event, she shook the hands of some of the people there, including Congressman Jason Chaffetz.

Chaffetz, of course, has led investigations into Clinton in the past few years, and he’s gotten criticism recently for scolding the U.S. government ethics chief after he criticized President Trump.

Chaffetz posted the following on Instagram after he shook Clinton’s hand to make it clear that he’s very happy about the election outcome (but also plans to keep investigating Clinton):

CANADIANS GOING TO TRUMP'S INAUGURATION TURNED AWAY AT U.S. BORDER

Several Canadians traveling to attend either the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States or a march planned for Saturday in Washington were turned away at the border by U.S. officials. Relations between Canada and the United States are under scrutiny following the election of Trump, who has vowed to put "America first" and renegotiate a trade agreement with Mexico and Canada.

"It seems to me that they just weren't interested in having us in the country for the inauguration," said Sasha Dyck, a 34-year-old nurse from Montreal. Dyck was car-pooling with five other Canadians and two French nationals on Thursday who were held for two hours at the Lacolle border crossing where they were searched, made to unlock their mobile phones and ultimately denied entry.

"I hope it doesn't represent a closing down or a firming up of the border, or of mentalities south of the border," Dyck said, adding that he was high-fived by U.S. border officials when he traveled south for Barack Obama's inauguration.

Clinton ally taps Clinton critic to lead 'Breitbart of the left'

NYTimes CEO: Media needs 'professional solidarity' under Trump

A media organization spearheaded by a Hillary Clinton ally will be led by a frequent Hillary Clinton critic.
True Blue Media, angling to become the left's answer to Breitbart News, will be helmed by the veteran journalist and syndicated columnist David Sirota, who has done investigative work at the troubled International Business Times since 2014.
The news was first reported by BuzzFeed.

Sirota has earned a reputation as a muckraking reporter with an eye for corruption and corporate influence in politics. As a result, he was a frequent critic of Clinton's, making him a peculiar fit for his new employer.
But in a statement, Sirota insisted he'll still be more journalist than activist.

Trump Inauguration Attendance is Noticeably Less Than Expected

With the start of the swearing in ceremonies at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration proper being about 20 minutes away, the pool feed used by all of the major television news organizations switched to an overhead shot of the National Mall. In that moment, something was a bit conspicuous, which quickly got pointed out by both television anchors and members of the news media on Twitter: There were clearly a lot less people there than had been anticipated.

On MSNBC, the anchors immediately took notice. “We do see a lot of white space there,” said Brian Williams. “That white space there gives you a good way of measuring how many people are gonna [unintelligible].” Rachel Maddow then chimed in, noting that no tickets were required to watch the inauguration from the National Mall.

“If people want to see this, this is the time for them to be getting there,” she added. “Some inaugurations are big, some inaugurations are small. One of the things that is unpredictable about our news president is that he does seem to be ratings-focused, and he likes to talk about the size of his support, the number of supporters, the number of people at his rallies. It’ll be interesting to see if this bothers him, how he reacts to this, if he does, in the end, have an unusually small inauguration.”

There are still hundreds of thousands of people there, but from the looks of the National Mall, those planning how to manage the crowd were seemingly expecting more.

Update 11:52 a.m. ET: Thanks to commenter “leftynyc” for pointing out that the National Mall has a live webcam that will let you follow the crowd back there, which is filling in a little bit more.

Update 12:05 p.m. ET: Right as Trump was about to be sworn in (note the time and date stamp in the lower left corner), the webcam was turned around. As noted above, it had been showing the white space in the crowd:

Op-Ed: Boycotting a Televised Inauguration Is Absurd. Heres What You Can Do Instead

Tearing Down The Demonic Circus

You do not beat the ringmaster from hell by turning your back on the stage. You do it by pulling up the stakes of his tent.

Our political sphere’s infection with the culture of reality TV will peak with the inauguration of Donald Trump. The multidimensional crisis of personality politics, public apathy, and media distortion has left us with a pop culture president, one whose grasp of policy could not pass a sixth grade civics class, whose mode of speech is incomprehensible to all but himself.

But none of that matters in the absurdity that is late stage capitalism. We are media intensive, we crave entertainment, we have bread and circuses, we have internet tabloids and Twitter, and this is what we consume, consume, consume.

Donald Trump knows how to sate that appetite. Like a kind of media Aikido master, he somehow turns the weight of his weaknesses. Trump has a chronic habit (a capitalist ethos) of cheating laborers who worked on his properties. That might be an issue were it not overshadowed by a gaffe in which the commander-in-chief elect referred to traumatized veterans as “weak” and “losers”. When a less able ringmaster may have been crucified for his clever tax evasion, Trump had a doomsday arsenal of sex bombs to set off. I am not attempting here to establish a priority tier regarding which of Donald Trump’s acts or utterances should disqualify him from public office. The theft of labor and exploitation of workers, the contempt and assault of women, the parasitic tax evasion, the coddled and privileged draft deferments, the ignorance of policy foreign and domestic, the lack of respect for the free press and for the bill of rights, the difficulties with speech expression and attention span, the lack of diplomacy—these are all valid and crucial critique.

Mark Zuckerberg fires back at misleading articles about his $100 million Hawaiian estate

Mark Zuckerberg fired back at "misleading stories" about the 700 acres of Hawaiian property he paid $100 million for in a post on his Facebook page Thursday.

The Facebook CEO has filed quiet title actions in court against a few hundred Hawaiians who have partial legal-ownership claims to parcels of land sprinkled throughout his vacation estate on the island of Kauai.

The families who have been sued collectively inherited 14 parcels of land through the Kuleana Act, a Hawaiian law established in 1850 that for the first time gave natives the right to own the land that they lived on.

In his Facebook post, Zuckerberg said the lawsuits were simply a way to find the various owners, some of whom are descendants that have ownership rights to 1/4% or 1% of a property and don't even know it.

The so-called quiet title suits are designed to "find all these partial owners so we can pay them their fair share," Zuckerberg said.

"For most of these folks, they will now receive money for something they never even knew they had," he said. "No one will be forced off the land."

"We are working with a professor of native Hawaiian studies and long time member of this community, who is participating in this quiet title process with us," he continued. "It is important to us that we respect Hawaiian history and traditions."

Zuckerberg, his wife Priscilla Chan, and their daughter Max last vacationed on their Kauai property in December.

Obama was right, Repubs are already asking Dems to help them after they repeal the ACA

We need Democrats' help to repeal and replace Obamacare, Republican Sen. Ron Johnson says

"My thought process is let's start working with Democrats, let's transition to a system that'll actually work that Democrats are talking about. They want to fix it, let's fix it for the benefit of the American public," Johnson said.

Now they say, let's start working w/Dems.

Says Dems want to fix it, let's fix it for the benefit of the American public.--------Notice what he did there, saying Dems with to fix it. What Dems said all along if you guys want so bad to repeal it, why not just offer help to make it better.

---------http://www.cnbc.com/2017/01/19/we-need-democrats-to-repeal-and-replace-obamacare-gop-sen-johnson.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Will the Dems hold together like Obama told them to do & not bail out the republicans?

We know Manchin is already going to go with the republicans

2) Or, will the Dems cave & bail them out. A lot of that is going to depend on the leadership of Schumer.

Zuckerberg wants to pay native Hawaiians to get the f off his 700-acre estate

Mark Zuckerberg is suing hundreds of people in Hawaii in his effort to create a secluded island.

The billionaire spent $100 million purchasing 700 acres of land in the island of Kauai back in 2014 and is still dealing with the fact that he doesn't actually have the exclusive rights to all of it.

Sounds nasty, right?

The lawsuits, filed in Hawaii's state Circuit Court on Dec. 30, are looking to identify local people's claims to land within the area he owns — the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Wednesday — to force a sale of those properties.

Zuckerberg is leveraging Hawaii's "quiet title" law, which allows rightful ownership of land to be decided before a judge. If co-owners do not agree to terms, the land can be auctioned.

News of the lawsuit came out shortly after reports indicated the CEO added about $5 billion to his fortune in the first two weeks of this year, so you can take a quick guess at who would win in an auction.

Police Body-Cams Shut Down for Inauguration and Womens March

Trump’s inauguration and the next day’s protest won’t be recorded by police body-cams. The ACLU, maybe surprisingly, is backing the decision, saying it protects protesters from surveillance. But what if it gets ugly?

During the presidential inauguration on Friday and during the “Women’s March on Washington” the following day, police body cameras will be off. Outrage!
Many activists have expressed vitriol over the blackout. “Civil rights groups are concerned that the police will violate their rights during the inauguration protests so they intend to record their behavior,” a viral post on LawOfficer.com reads. “Meanwhile, the ACLU is demanding that the police turn off their body worn cameras during the events.”
The ACLU was targeted in viral posts about this because it supported a D.C. law from 2015 that dictates police can only turn cameras on “for the purpose of documenting violations of law and police actions, as an aid to future coordination and deployment of law enforcement units, and for training purposes.”
Police cannot turn them on simply to monitor people exercising their First Amendment rights. According to the ACLU, it’s for protection of civil liberties.
