Threatened Nations Aim for 100 Percent Renewables

Source: Climate Central

Published: November 26th, 2016
By Megan Rowling, Thomson Reuters Foundation

A group of the countries most at risk from climate change said they would strive to make their energy production 100 percent renewable "as rapidly as possible," as part of efforts to limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), which numbers 48 nations, also committed to update their climate action plans submitted as part of the U.N. climate pact agreed in Paris last year and prepare low-carbon development strategies for mid-century, both before 2020.

But they emphasised they would need additional funding for more ambitious steps to reduce emissions and protect their people from extreme weather and rising seas.

"Today's commitment by the member countries of the Climate Vulnerable Forum to move toward powering their economies entirely with renewable energy is a bold vision that sets the pace for the world's efforts to implement the Paris Agreement and move even more quickly to solve the climate crisis," former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said in a statement.

Anti-pipeline protesters arrested at North Dakota shopping mall

Source: Reuters

Sat Nov 26, 2016 | 2:22am EST
By Terray Sylvester | BISMARCK, N.D.

More than 30 activists protesting plans to run an oil pipeline beneath a lake near a North Dakota Indian reservation were arrested on Friday at a retail mall during a rally timed to coincide with the busiest shopping day of the year.

The rally was held at the main shopping center of North Dakota's capital city on "Black Friday" in a bid to draw more attention to a pipeline project that critics say poses a threat to water resources and sacred Native American sites.

The demonstrators, including members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, walked into the Kirkwood Mall in downtown Bismarck and formed a prayer circle just inside the entrance, defying demands by mall management that they leave the premises.

About 100 protesters gathered at the mall at shortly before 1 p.m. and at least 33 people were taken into custody for trespassing on private property after they disregarded repeated orders to disperse, police said.

Ya think the mall and cops would have treated a white Christian prayer circle the same way? If you do, then there's something I haven't mentioned here before: I'm a rich Nigerian princess, and.....

I agree with most, though not all, of the things Chomsky is saying here, but the mid-vid commentary by Hasan is actually the best part.

Liberal government to make key decision on fate of Northern Gateway pipeline today

Source: CBC News (Canada)

By John Paul Tasker, CBC News Posted: Nov 25, 2016 5:00 AM ET Last Updated: Nov 25, 2016 9:07 AM ET

The federal cabinet will deliver its decision on the Enbridge-backed Northern Gateway pipeline today, after years of delays and false starts. But it will be days before the public knows the fate of the controversial project.

The National Energy Board and the former Harper government signed off on the $7.9-billion project, and imposed 209 conditions. But the Federal Court overturned those approvals in June after it found Ottawa had not adequately consulted Indigenous people along the project's 1,177-kilometre route.

Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr said in September the government will not appeal the court's ruling, meaning cabinet now has three options on the table: issue an extension and launch further consultations with Indigenous people, approve the project in defiance of the Federal Court, or reject the project outright.

Carr said Thursday that while a decision has to be made by Friday to meet a self-imposed deadline, cabinet's move would be announced publicly later. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is attending la Francophonie summit in Madagascar, returning Monday.

Well THAT Was a Dud!

At dinner last night, my wife and I were locked and loaded in anticipation of the battle with the Trumpies in the family, but they were downright subdued. I think I know why, though it wasn't explicitly stated: I think they're starting to "get it." I think they're beginning to realize they've been taken to the cleaners. I didn't even get get to rant about Jeff Sessions as Trump's AG. As soon as I mentioned his name, my uber-right sister in law Gloria, who was born and raised in Alabama, harrumphed an said, "I wouldn't hire that asshole to walk my dog!"

Well, at least the Washington Racists lost to Dallas.

West Virginia man accused of killing teen who bumped him

Source: CNN

(CNN)William Ronald Pulliam appeared unrepentant after fatally shooting a teenager during a confrontation outside a West Virginia discount store.

"The way I look at it, that's another piece of trash off the street," Pulliam allegedly told police, according to a criminal complaint.

But the 62-year-old man, in a jailhouse interview with CNN affiliate WCHS, categorically denied making that statement. He said he feared for his life when 15-year-old James Means allegedly pulled a gun on him. The complaint did not say Means had a gun.

"I mean, believe me, I did not want to kill anybody, but they're not going to kill me," Pulliam, wearing an orange jailhouse uniform, told the station on Tuesday.

Michael Moore's Five-Point List, Posted on November 9

1: Take over the Democratic Party and return it to the people. They have failed us miserably.

2: Fire all pundits, predictors, pollsters, and anyone else in the media who had a narrative they wouldn't let go of and refused to listen to or acknowledge what was really going on. Those same bloviators will now tell us we must "heal the divide" and "come together." They will pull more hooey like that out of their ass in the days to come. Turn them off.

3. Any Democratic member of Congress who didn't wake up this morning ready to fight, resist, and obstruct in the way Republicans did against President Obama every day for eight full years must step out of the way and let those of us who know the score lead the way in stopping the meanness and the madness that's about to begin.

4: Everyone must stop saying they are "stunned" and "shocked". What you mean to say is that you were in a bubble and weren't paying attention to your fellow Americans and their despair. YEARS of being neglected by both parties, the anger and the need for revenge against the system only grew. Along came a TV star they liked whose plan was to destroy both parties and tell them all "You're fired!" Trump's victory is no surprise. He was never a joke. Treating him as one only strengthened him. He is both a creature and a creation of the media and the media will never own that.

5: You must say this sentence to everyone you meet: "HILLARY CLINTON WON THE POPULAR VOTE!" The MAJORITY of our fellow Americans preferred Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. Period. Fact. If you woke up this morning thinking you live in an effed-up country, you don't. The majority of your fellow Americans wanted Hillary, not Trump. The only reason he's president is because of an arcane, insane 18th-century idea called the Electoral College. Until we change that, we'll continue to have presidents we didn't elect and didn't want. You live in a country where a majority of its citizens have said they believe there's climate change, they believe women should be paid the same as men, they want a debt-free college education, they don't want us invading countries, they want a raise in the minimum wage, and they want a single-payer true universal health care system. None of that has changed. We live in a country where the majority agree with the "liberal" position. We just lack the liberal leadership to make that happen (see: #1 above).
