Top Clinton State Department aide helped Clinton Foundation

Source: CNN

A top aide to Hillary Clinton at the State Department traveled to New York to interview job candidates for a top job at the Clinton Foundation, a CNN investigation has found.

The fact that the aide, Cheryl Mills, was taking part in such a high level task for the Clinton foundation while also working as chief of staff for the secretary of state raises new questions about the blurred lines that have dogged the Clintons in recent years.

On June 19, 2012, Mills, then the chief of staff for Clinton at the State Department, boarded a New York City-bound Amtrak train in Washington's Union station.

The next morning, at the offices of a New York based executive search firm, Mills would interview two high-level business executives. Her mission was to help the Clinton Foundation find a new leader, a source told CNN.

Researchers crack open unusually advanced malware that hid for 5 years

Source: Arstechnica

Security experts have discovered a malware platform that's so advanced in its design and execution that it could probably have been developed only with the active support of a nation state.

The malware—known alternatively as "ProjectSauron" by researchers from Kaspersky Lab and "Remsec" by their counterparts from Symantec—has been active since at least 2011 and has been discovered on 30 or so targets. Its ability to operate undetected for five years is a testament to its creators, who clearly studied other state-sponsored hacking groups in an attempt to replicate their advances and avoid their mistakes. State-sponsored groups have been responsible for malware like the Stuxnet- or National Security Agency-linked Flame, Duqu, and Regin. Much of ProjectSauron resides solely in computer memory and was written in the form of Binary Large Objects, making it hard to detect using antivirus.

Part of what makes ProjectSauron's so impressive is its ability to collect data from air-gapped computers. To do this, it uses specially prepared USB storage drives that have a virtual file system that isn't viewable by the Windows operating system. To infected computers, the removable drives appear to be approved devices, but behind the scenes are several hundred megabytes reserved for storing data that is kept on the air-gapped machines. The arrangement works even against computers in which data-loss prevention software blocks the use of unknown USB drives.

Kaspersky researchers still aren't sure precisely how the USB-enabled exfiltration works. The presence of the invisible storage area doesn't in itself allow attackers to seize control of air-gapped computers. The researchers suspect the capability is used only in rare cases and requires use of a zero-day exploit that has yet to be discovered. In all, Project Sauron is made up of at least 50 modules that can be mixed and matched to suit the objectives of each individual infection.

The ability to jump the gap is crazy stuff.

Error puts Chinese tourist in German migrant hostel

Source: BBC

German media say the 31-year-old backpacker, who spoke neither German nor English, underwent a medical check and his fingerprints were taken.

A Red Cross worker later found out that the man's wallet had been stolen in Stuttgart. But instead of going to the police the man registered as a migrant.

A translation app confirmed Mr Schluetermann's suspicions that the tourist had got entangled in the asylum system by mistake.

"It came up with phrases like 'I want to go on a trip abroad'," he said. It emerged that the tourist had plans to visit Italy and France.

Odd story. Was the hostel on lock down?

Next Fraud Suit Coming?: Donald Trump's Campaign Website Won't Let Some Cancel Recurring Donations

"You used to love Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, but now you've had a change of heart — and want to cancel your recurring monthly donation to his campaign?

Too bad.

As the screenshots below demonstrate, there is no clear option on Trump's website to cancel monthly contributions or remove your credit card information: The site layout makes it appear that once you've set up a donation, you may only switch from one valid credit card to another.

There is, actually, a way to cancel — but only if you register your account by setting a password and navigate through a labyrinthine process.

This design flaw first came to light Wednesday, when CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond tweeted a screenshot of an email from a disenchanted Trump donor who alleged that the campaign has not returned voice message requests to cancel contributions. "

Cops Accused of Intentionally Mowing Down Groundhog in Golf Cart

"Two police officers in upstate New York have been suspended as authorities investigate claims the cops used a golf cart to run down and kill a groundhog during a police union's golf tournament.

Witnesses reported seeing the two men chase a groundhog near one of the holes at the Frear Park Golf Course in the city of Troy last Friday afternoon, authorities said. The animal was killed when the cart ran over it."

Centuries-Old Flea Market In France Canceled This Year Over Terrorism Fears

Source: NPR

For centuries, the northern French town of Lille has been home to an autumn flea market — as famous for its party atmosphere as for its wealth of secondhand goods. Last year, more than 2 million people came to the weekend festival to gulp down oysters, drink all night and haggle over goods.

But La Braderie de Lille has been called off this year. After recent terrorist attacks in France, authorities say it is impossible to ensure security, NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports.

"Lille Mayor Martine Aubrey said canceling La Braderie was a gut-wrenching decision, but the city could not guarantee the safety of the more than 2 million visitors who show up for the street fair," Eleanor reports. "The head of Lille's Chamber Of Commerce called the cancellation an economic and cultural disaster.

Tradition or no, the mayor says that this year the risks were just too high.

How can Trump get away with calling Elizabeth Warren Pocahontas?

Maybe I'm over sensitive because my grandmother is Blackfoot and by extension me as well. If it were any other culture or race it would be lights out. It just seems to me that our original people get almost zero respect.

Remember the outrage from this shirt?

Russia accuses U.S. of backing Syrian rebels who use poison gas on civilians

Source: Reuters

Russia's foreign ministry sharply criticized U.S. behavior in Syria on Thursday, accusing Washington of backing rebels who use poison gas against civilians and of killing hundreds in air strikes.

The ministry's spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, referred to rebels supported by Washington as "animals" and said Washington and its allies were recklessly carrying out air attacks leading to numerous civilian deaths.

Zakharova's strong comments, in a statement posted to social media, underscored the serious divisions between Moscow and Washington over Syria where they are united in their opposition to Islamic State but so far little else.

Moscow backs President Bashar al-Assad and his forces, while Washington supports rebel groups fighting both his government and Islamic State militants. While the two countries argue over a possible peace plan, a battle for eastern Aleppo has erupted.

Dems turn the tables — demand Cruz convene panel investigation on Trump’s call for ‘cyber attack’

"Two Senate Democrats are asking Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to open a panel investigation into GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s suggestion that Russian hackers should invade Hillary Clinton’s emails, Politico reports.

Cruz, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee oversight subpanel, is no stranger to convening panels to discuss foreign threats. Last month, Cruz called for a hearing on what he called the Obama administration’s failure to counter Islamist efforts to impose Sharia law on the West, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The Democrats, Sens. Chris Coons of Delaware and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island sent Cruz a letter on Wednesday asking for an oversight hearing to see if “existing federal criminal statutes and federal court jurisdiction sufficiently address conduct related to foreign entities that could undermine our elections.”

“Mr. Trump’s encouragement of a Russian cyber incursion of a U.S. presidential candidate represents an unprecedented call for a foreign government to spy on a U.S. citizen and interfere with a U.S. election,” they wrote."
