Bernie Sanders Endorses Three Women House Candidates

"Sen. Bernie Sanders is endorsing three women running for Congress, and helping to raise money for them, too.

In fundraising appeals being sent Wednesday, Mr. Sanders asks for contributions to be divided among his campaign and those of Zephyr Teachout of New York, Pramila Jayapal of Washington state and Lucy Flores of Nevada. All three women have endorsed his presidential campaign.

Ms. Teachout, an academic and activist running in New York’s Hudson Valley, turned in a surprisingly strong showing in the gubernatorial primary against incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2014. Her gubernatorial bid was largely focused on the influence of money in politics, and, much like Mr. Sanders’s campaign, her efforts elicited an unexpected wave of support from the far left of the party. Now she is running for Congress."

Hear Hillary Clinton Defend Her Role in Honduras Coup When Questioned by Juan González

"With the New York primary less than a week away, the race for the Democratic nomination continues to heat up. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders will meet Thursday in Brooklyn for their first debate in over a month. We begin today’s show looking at Hillary Clinton and Honduras. Earlier this week, the former secretary of state publicly defended her role in the 2009 coup in Honduras that ousted democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya. Since the coup, Honduras has become one of the most violent places in the world. Clinton was asked about Honduras during a meeting with the New York Daily News editorial board on Saturday. The question was posed by Democracy Now!’s own Juan González."

Bill Clinton: I don’t like it when people say Hillary Clinton is 'part of the establishment'

"Bill Clinton has fought criticisms that his wife and the presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is part of the “establishment” following opponents’ claims that she has ties with Wall Street, has accepted speech money from various banks and has worked for most of her life within politics.

“The only thing I really dislike about this campaign is whenever somebody endorses Hillary, they get blasted on the email, on the internet, for being part of the establishment,” Mr Clinton said to a small crowd in New York. “It’s a pretty big establishment now.

“I mean it includes the Congressional Black Caucus, Planned Parenthood, the Human Rights Campaign, the League of Conservation Voters, several Hispanic organisations – most of the Irish – and I could go on and on.”

Sorry Bill, you and Hillary are a part of the establishment.

Hillary’s “I’m Not a Crook” Moment

"As the Battle of New York looms, an underground shadow war flirts with High Noon. After nearly one year, the FBI has finally investigated the treasure trove contained in Hillary Clinton’s subterranean private email server. The FBI has refused to release any records. Remember, this is a criminal investigation.

Former State Department IT official Bryan Pagliano – who essentially set up Clinton’s personal server – was granted immunity in exchange for cooperating with the FBI’s investigation. A whodunit applies on whether Pagliano was told this server might be the conduit of secret State Department communications as well as top secret National Security issues.

The timeline of the Clinton subterranean homesick server blues does raise eyebrows. The story first broke in March 2013, when Romanian hacker “Guccifer” leaked four intercepted Sidney Blumenthal e-mails – related to Libya and Benghazi – to selected global media outlets."

And there's this-

"The Queen of Libya

If we follow journalism’s golden rule, widely praised by Alex Cockburn, of never trusting anything unless it’s officially denied, President Obama may have – inadvertently – placed Clinton in a world of grief. The President “guaranteed” on Fox News that there will be “no political influence” from the White House"

Here's What I Learned Canvassing Flatbush for Bernie

"Late afternoon, on a chilly but sunny day in
Flatbush, Brooklyn, I set out to do door-to-door canvassing for Bernie. About 10 people, mixed in age, met our contact person from Communications Workers of America at the Dunkin Donuts on Church and Nostrand Avenues. It was a quick in and out without much orientation or conversation. We were there to work. We got lists of registered Democratic Party voters we were tasked to visit. Only about 25% of people on the lists were at home, but we had lots of lively and interesting conversations, both with people on our lists and with people on the streets.

It was great to be back in Flatbush, a neighborhood near Brooklyn College where I taught psychology for 42 years and ran arts-based after-school programs for Brooklyn high school students, many of those programs in Flatbush. Lots of my BC students came from Flatbush. For 17 summers I ran programs providing training for college students as youth development workers with special needs kids, again, many from Flatbush. And I grew up not far from here, just one neighborhood away. So I was happy to be back on familiar turf.

Here’s how I usually start out when someone answers the door: “Hi, I’m Nancy and I am working with the Bernie Sanders for President campaign. Can I please speak with _______ (voter’s name on the list)? Do you plan to vote in the upcoming April 19th New York State primary?”

And the conversation goes on from there. Usually I ask if the person has heard about Bernie and if they plan to vote for him? What have you heard about him? And then a short discussion ensues, depending on what the person has to say, concerns they have, etc. If the person says that they plan to vote for Hilary, I thank them and move on. No arguments here, just respect and a better use of my time.."

Hillary Clinton Abandoning Education Reform

"New York is a hotbed of anti-testing activism, especially in affluent suburban districts, where parents who equate testing with excessive curriculum pressure have joined forces with teachers unions who see standardized tests as a tool that subjects them to unwanted accountability. Hillary Clinton has already distanced herself from the education-reform movement, which is a predictable course of action for a Democrat facing a contested primary. The looming New York primary has raised the pressure for her to placate the burgeoning “opt-out” movement, which encourages students to boycott standardized tests. Bill Clinton asserted last week that even one national test per year is too many. “The idea of having to give a national test every year for five years in a row for people from the third to the eighth grade doesn’t make as much sense as investing the same amount of money in helping the teachers to be better teachers.”

There are certainly reasons to believe some schools spend too much time on tests and that consolidation is in order. But this is an odd position for a liberal politician to take, for many reasons. The resource cost to implement a single annual national test is minuscule. And the use of data to measure the effectiveness of public policy is a foundation of progressive governance going back more than a century. Opting out of tests degrades their value as a data tool and makes it harder, or even impossible, for policymakers to measure what is working and what isn’t.

What's more, testing is an important tool to measure racial and economic equality. A report this year by Ulrich Boser and Catherine Brown at the Center for American Progress found that states that use standards-based reform have produced better outcomes for low-income children. (My wife, Robin Chait, used to work as an education-policy analyst at CAP, and now works for a public charter school.) Not surprisingly, civil-rights organizations representing African-Americans and Latinos have argued to keep in place annual national testing."

Bernie Sanders Nearly Catches Up With Hillary Clinton In California

"SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – California’s Democratic primary this June is no longer a sure thing for frontrunner Hillary Clinton. The latest Field Poll finds Clinton has lost almost all of her once-massive lead over Bernie Sanders.
Less than a year ago, Clinton led Sanders in the Field Poll 66 percent to nine percent. Three months ago, Sanders had whittled her lead down to 11 points. Now Clinton leads 47 percent to 41 percent, a margin of just six points.

“Hillary Clinton is ahead, but not by much,” Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo told KCBS.
While the former Secretary of State leads among Democrats, the senator from Vermont is winning independent voters, who are allowed to vote in the state’s Democratic primary on June 7th. And Sanders is crushing Clinton among younger voters, whether they are men, women, white or Latino.
“Where he’s connecting most, it’s very clear in the poll, it’s generational and it crosses all sorts of subgroups,” DiCamillo said.

Clinton is winning big among older voters of all stripes. But when measuring all Californians, including Republicans, Clinton no longer has a positive rating.
“That’s the first time we’ve seen that,” DiCamillo said. “By contrast, Sanders is viewed favorably 55 to 35, so Clinton has to come through the primary campaign unscathed."
