Bernie Sanders’ vision for America would increase government spending by trillions of dollars if he were elected president and implemented all of his proposals. The independent U.S. senator from Vermont running for the Democratic presidential nomination has called for far-reaching government programs that total $18 trillion dollars in new spending over a decade, according to the Wall Street Journal, which released a fiscal analysis of the candidate’s proposals Tuesday.
Sanders’ spending plan would require an estimated $15 trillion for a government-run, universal health-care system. Tens of billions more would be spent on infrastructure, a Social Security expansion and free tuition at public colleges. “One of the demands of my campaign is that we think big and not small,” Sanders recently said in a speech to the Democratic National Committee.
The programs are so expensive because they would address an array of festering problems, said Warren Gunnels, Sanders’ policy director. “Sen. Sanders’s agenda does cost money,” Gunnels told the Journal. “If you look at the problems that are out there, it’s very reasonable.”

And yet another labor union endorsement for Hillary.
Hillary Clinton is racking up union endorsements, landing the support on Monday of a major national labor organization and another key group in the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire.
The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry, which has 340,000 members, announced in a statement it would back the former secretary of State’s bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (BAC), a group with about 80,000 members, said in a statement that “no presidential candidate is better qualified than Hillary Clinton to occupy the White House.”
“There is only one candidate – Hillary Clinton – who can lead American workers to triumph in the face of today’s hostile political climate, difficult financial times, and relentless attacks against the right to organize,” the group said.
It’s the third union endorsement for Clinton, who has previously received backing from two other powerful groups: the American Federation of Teachers and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
Hillary Clinton Releases Broad Campaign Finance Reform Plan.
Her plan goes beyond a call for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision.
"We have to end the flood of secret, unaccountable money that is distorting our elections, corrupting our political system, and drowning out the voices of too many everyday Americans,” Clinton said in a statement released by her campaign. “Our democracy should be about expanding the franchise, not charging an entrance fee. It starts with overturning the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, and continues with structural reform to our campaign finance system so there’s real sunshine and increased participation.”
Clinton’s proposals include a handful of actions she could influence immediately if she won the White House. She promised to issue an executive order requiring all government contractors to disclose their campaign contributions, including to outside groups that currently do not disclose donors. She said she also would advocate for the Securities and Exchange Commission to issue a rule requiring all publicly traded companies to disclose their political spending, including undisclosed outside spending, to their shareholders.
Proposals requiring congressional approval include support for enacting a small donor matching system of public financing for presidential and congressional elections along the lines of legislation sponsored by Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) and Reps. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and David Price (D-N.C.). Clinton would also press for the passage of disclosure legislation in Congress that would require nonprofits spending money on elections to reveal their donors.
She also reiterated her support for a constitutional amendment to undo the Citizens United decision, and said she would appoint justices who would side with the court’s liberal faction on issues of campaign finance and voting rights.
The proposals were some of the more sought-after policies that campaign finance reform groups have pressed since the court’s 2010 decision.
“With the release of this strong, bold plan, Hillary Clinton recognizes that in order to create government of, by, and for the people — not just the wealthy campaign funders — it’s crucial to amplify the voices of regular Americans,” David Donnelly, president and CEO of the campaign finance reform group Every Voice, said in a statement. “What she’s proposed is both good policy and good politics. That’s why Clinton should actively campaign on this platform and push these solutions to the center of the debate in the days, weeks, and months to come.”

Tom Harkin: Clinton shares my values on social and economic justice
We all know Iowans have a sincere responsibility in nominating our next president. This year, that responsibility is as important as it’s ever been.
As Iowans and as a nation we fought back from a terrible recession, but we are making progress. Now it’s time for a president who can create a stronger future. As Democrats, we’re fortunate to have a slate of candidates that are all fine individuals, but we need a fighter who has a record of getting things done and the vision for the future that will build on the progress we’ve made. For my wife, Ruth and I, that candidate is Hillary Clinton.
I have had the privilege of knowing Hillary Clinton for a long time. She and I share many of the same deeply-held beliefs. We believe everyone should be able to find well-paying jobs, that every child should receive the best education possible, that the elderly should be able to retire with dignity and security, and that everyone should have access to quality and affordable healthcare. From ensuring universal access to pre-kindergarten to building a clean-energy economy, a common thread runs through all of these plans — the idea of expanding opportunity.
As a kid, I never could have imagined all the opportunities I would have in my life. I grew up in the small town of Cumming, Iowa, the son of an immigrant mother and a coal-mining father with a sixth-grade education. When my family fell on hard times, my father was hired by the Works Progress Administration. That job gave him dignity and hope. During my 40 years serving Iowa in Congress, I kept my father’s WPA card hanging on the wall in my office to remind me where I came from and who I was fighting for.
Hillary Clinton’s commitment to public service stems from the same values. Her mother, Dorothy, was abandoned by her parents and sent to live with relatives who did not want her. By age 14, she was working to support herself just to get by. Guided by her mother’s experience, Hillary has devoted her career to championing the needs of children. She has been a tireless advocate for women and families since I first met her. As First Lady of the United States she was instrumental in advancing the idea that health care should be a right and not a privilege. As my colleague in the Senate and as Secretary of State, she made women’s rights and economic opportunity central to American foreign policy. Hillary has never forgotten who she is fighting for.
