Segregation, and how it works.

Segregation can be codified into law, segregation de jure, as it was in the US for many years. And that is the most obvious, the most blatant type because it is written into the law.

But segregation can also be unwritten, segregation de facto, and that type of segregation is just as obvious to the victims, but more deniable by the oppressors because intent to discriminate can be denied.

In my area, in 1980, a divorced woman with a Greek last name moved into an all white area, working and middle class . When people found out that the woman with the Greek last name happened to have black skin, her car was fire bombed and she moved from her rental unit immediately.

There was no law forbidding her to move into the area, no covenant that forbade her to move into the area, no signs, but none were needed. She got the point.

In another Chicago neighborhood, an area heavily populated by white police, firefighters, and other city workers, black families that attempt to move into the area have graffiti painted onto their houses and cars. They get the message as well.

So when we speak of moving on, and times changing, yes, things do change, but the damage is done.

Please, someone tell me what an Independent voter is.

I read the term constantly.

The US corporate media constantly says that Democrats must move to the center right to attract these so-called Independent voters. Given how far the GOP has pushed the debate to the right, does that mean that these Independents are actually conservatives?

And if anyone claims to be an Independent, but votes generally for the GOP, is that Independent in favor of white supremacy, catering to the very rich, anti-worker, and anti-choice? If so, that self described Independent is actually a conservative.

When one Party is the Party of the 1%, and the other Party is the Party of inclusion, and equal rights, any Independents who vote for the GOP candidate are lying, confused, or badly misinformed about the issues and where the two Parties stand on those issues.

The busing issue is based on one unavoidable fact.

Busing was a response to the brutal segregation of the schools in the North and the South.

If the racism and inequality and hatred had not been so brutally obvious, busing would have been unnecessary.

Busing was a response to the fact that non-white students were treated as third class citizens.

Kamala Harris Sends Debate Crowd Roaring By Exposing The Myth Of Trump's Economy

From the article:

Kamala Harris sent the crowd roaring on Thursday night after she tore Donald Trump to shreds for bragging about an economy that isn’t working for the middle class.
Harris said Trump likes to brag about the low jobless rate, but the problem isn’t that people aren’t working. It’s that they’re working multiple jobs to make ends meet – and they still aren’t able to put food on the table.

The US corporate media plays an enormous role in propagating the myth of a robust economy.

The truth for the working class is that since the Reagan years, wages have been, at best, stagnant for workers. Yes, the stock market makes huge gains, and various economic bubbles have presented the illusion of a good economy, but the truth is that the economy is only good for the rich, and the upper middle class of professionals.

And while Bernie Sanders has been presenting this class based economic message for many years, he still fails to link class based, predatory capitalistic economics, with its racist foundation.

Race is the prime factor used by predatory capitalists to divide workers.

Robert E. Lee Descendant: Reparations Are Necessary If People 'Want To Fix Racism'

From the article:

The Rev. Robert W. Lee IV, the general’s distant nephew, recently appeared on “CNN Tonight” after the House held a hearing on reparations for slavery. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) had come under fire for saying he didn’t think reparations “for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea.”

Lee disagreed with the majority leader.
“It’s going to take both people of color and white people to fix the mess that white people have made, Lee said. “I’m a white man, I’ve got a lot of privilege .... How can we use our privilege to literally put our money where our mouth is. If people are saying they want to fix racism or ... fix this issue in our country, then they need to put their money where their mouth is, and that comes in the form of reparations.”

Slavery in the US involved buying and selling black people. And these people were treated as literal commodities. And this commodification continued for most of American history. Even a civil war was not enough to overcome 240 years of prior slavery.

And the rich whites in the entire country benefited from slavery. Even today, 400 years after the first African slaves were shipped to this country, black wealth is far less than white wealth.

Reparations are one way to partially redress the horrors of slavery.

Paul Ryan Crawls Out Of The Woodwork And Reminds America What A Shameful Sellout He Is

From the article:

Just when most of the country had seemingly forgotten what a spineless sellout Paul Ryan was, the former Republican House Speaker from Wisconsin returned to give the American people a reminder.

According to The Hill, the failed 2012 vice presidential nominee sat down for an interview with PBS NewsHour’s Judy Woodruff on Sunday, and he praised Donald Trump’s so-called leadership.

“What I think people get excited about is he’s not taking any crap,” the former congressman said of Trump. “I mean, he’s taking on political correctness, he’s taking fights that a lot of people want to see fought.”

Trump is an open racist, an open misogynist, and a crook. What exactly does the phrase political correctness have to do with that?

Muslim women defy ban to swim in burkinis at French pool 24 June 2019

From the article:

In a protest inspired by US civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks, they bathed in suits covering their entire bodies - apart from the face, hands and feet - in the city of Grenoble on Sunday.
The Jean Bron swimming pool is among many in France that ban burkinis....

"We must fight against discriminatory policies and prejudice in France, as we are actually deprived of our civil rights of access to public services and city-owned infrastructures."

Liberté, égalité, et fraternité, a l'exception des Mussulmans?

Are liberty, and equality, and brotherhood reserved for the European citizens of France? It certainly seems as if many in France take this position.

Joe Biden and other candidates speak to diverse faith leaders, activists

From the article:

Former Vice President Joe Biden kicked off a major forum on faith and poverty issues Monday afternoon, fielding questions from faith leaders and low-income Americans during a gathering organized by the Poor People’s Campaign.

“We have the greatest income inequity … in the United States of America since 1902,” Biden told the crowd of hundreds assembled on Monday (June 17) at Trinity Washington University in Washington, D.C. “But the fact of the matter is there is plenty, plenty to go around.”

Biden, the current frontrunner among Democrats, according to most polls, was also asked questions by the co-chairs of the Poor People’s Campaign — the Rev. William Barber and the Rev. Liz Theoharis — as well as MSNBC host Joy Reid.

Attendees at the gathering of religious progressives peppered the onetime Delaware senator with questions about how he would address issues impacting the poor, including whether he would campaign in the South — a region that faces some of the largest issues of poverty.

Biden was on target when he said:

The GOP is the Party of openness.

The GOP is openly misogynistic.

The GOP is openly racist.

The GOP is openly Islamophobic.

The GOP is openly anti-worker.

The GOP is openly anti-environmental.

The GOP is openly anti-science.

The GOP is openly the Party of endless war.

The GOP is openly criminal in its defense of Trump, and in its defense of Trump's crimes.

The GOP will not revert to "normal" after Trump.

What the Trump led GOP is represents what is normal for the GOP, and has been so since 1968.

Racism is the foundation of the post-1968 GOP.

Representing the wealthy to the detriment of all others has been the post-1920 GOP.

Misogyny is the GOP.

Lying about what their policies are intended to do is the GOP.

Electoral cheating and voter suppression is the GOP, and has been since 1968.

There is no normal GOP that will come out again after Trump leaves.

And thinking otherwise is, in my view, delusional.

And this is not to say that all conservative voters are racist, misogynistic, greedy liars, but being one is certainly no obstacle to electoral success in the GOP.
