For all of the talk about the DOJ opinion that states a sitting President cannot be indicted,

that makes no sense.

Let me state that I am not an attorney, nor am I an expert on the Constitution, but consider one thing before you argue that the DOJ opinion should be definitive on the subject of indicting a sitting President.

The President cannot exist above the law because the President only exists because of the law.

Prior to the Constitution being adopted, there was no US President. The position of President was created by the Constitution and the associated laws regarding the office.

So it stands to reason, speaking philosophically, that the creation cannot be above what created it.

Thoughts?

To Make Sure 'No President Is Above the Law,' Warren Calls for New Measure Enabling DOJ to Indict

To Make Sure 'No President Is Above the Law,' Warren Calls for New Measure Enabling DOJ to Indict a President

From the article:

Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Friday set out to change a decades-old rule which allows a U.S. president to abuse power in any number of ways without being held accountable.
In a Medium post titled "No President Is Above the Law," the Massachusetts Democrat called on lawmakers to pass legislation that would allow for the indictment of a sitting president—a measure that would have allowed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to act on his decision not to exonerate President Donald Trump.
"Donald Trump believes that he can violate the law, and he believes that the role of the Department of Justice is to help him get away with it," Warren wrote. "That's not how our country is supposed to work."

Fox Watching Republican Shocked To Learn That Mueller Didn't Exonerate Trump

From the article:

A woman at Rep. Justin Amash’s recent town hall was confused because she votes Republican listens to conservative news and she had never heard anything about the Mueller report not exonerating Trump.

Cathy Garnaat, a Republican who supported Amash and the president said she was upset about Amash’s position but wanted to hear his reasoning. She said that she will definitely support Trump in 2020 but that Tuesday night was the first time she had heard that the Mueller report didn’t completely exonerate the president.

I am certain that Ms. Garnaat considers herself to be a well informed voter.

AOC Calls for Ban on Revolving Door as Study Shows Two-Thirds of Recently Departed Lawmakers Now K Street Lobbyists

From the article:

In a tweet, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said that former members of Congress "shouldn't be allowed to turn right around and leverage your service for a lobbyist check."
"I don't think it should be legal at ALL to become a corporate lobbyist if you've served in Congress," said Ocasio-Cortez. "At minimum there should be a long wait period."

And to extend the logic further, retired high ranking military officers should be forbidden to accept positions with defense contractors as well.

I was an expert witness against a teacher who taught students to question the Holocaust

From the article:

When I first set out to research how the Holocaust was being depicted in textbooks in New Jersey’s public schools, my hope was to see what students were being taught about the systematic state-sponsored killing of 6 million Jewish men, women and and children.

I never imagined that my work would lead me to serve as a witness against a history teacher who encouraged his students to question whether the Holocaust had ever taken place at all.....

In Mr. Ali’s case, he alleged – among other things – that he had a First Amendment right to share materials that he saw fit.
When he was asked whether he taught his students to “question the facts as to whether Hitler chose to brutally abuse, take advantage, starve and murder Jews for absolutely no reason at all,” Mr. Ali responded that he taught his students to “question everything.” …

But United States District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo disagreed. She ruled that the school district, not the classroom teacher, “has the ultimate right to decide what will be taught in the classroom.” Except for a procedural matter unrelated to his teaching, she tossed out the various claims in Mr. Ali’s lawsuit, saying that he failed to show he was fired for anything other than the reasons given by the school district – not his race or his religion like he claimed.

The First Amendment does not give anyone the right to teach lies.

The Language of the Unheard: Martin Luther King Jr.'s social democracy.

From the article:

Slowed by white backlash and political exhaustion, civil-rights leaders hoped the Poor People’s Campaign might give new energy to the radical visions of emancipation they had helped popularize, but for many in the movement’s rank and file, it felt like a desperate last cry rather than the beginning of a new phase in the struggle for racial equality.

In her new book King and the Other America, historian Sylvie Laurent helps rescue the Poor People’s Campaign from this unfair reputation and makes a compelling case that it deserves to be not only better remembered but also more closely studied and emulated by the left today....

King and the Other America helps make another important argument. Situating the economic egalitarianism of the Poor People’s Campaign and Martin Luther King Jr.’s later years in a far longer history of black activism and social-democratic thinking, she helps map out the deeper intellectual and political roots of an entwined racial and economic egalitarianism that has been at the center of much of African-American politics for nearly a century.

As much as I agree with the class based economic analysis articulated by Bernie Sanders, what he missed, and what many class based analyses miss, is the foundational role that racism played, and continues to play, in understanding US politics and US capitalism.

We cannot discuss economic injustice, and we cannot ask why white working class voters vote for the GOP, a vote that is against their class interests, if we do not acknowledge the crucial, the vital, role that slavery played in dividing workers by race.

Getting in on -- and tossed out of -- the Satanist Temple joke

From the article:

Jex Blackmore is a Satanist, as she plainly admits to the camera in Director Penny Lane’s documentary “Hail Satan?,” a portrait of the 30-something Blackmore that opened earlier this year.
But she’s not a Satan worshipper. A self-proclaimed “Satanic feminist,” she was until recently a national spokesperson for the non-theistic, religious-cum-political-activist group called The Satanic Temple. She defines a Satanist as “an individual who embraces her pariah status and actively challenges arbitrary authority in defense of personal sovereignty.”...

The Satanic Temple insisted her appearance (and incendiary rhetoric) wasn’t formally sanctioned by TST, and it has since severed ties with Blackmore. Blackmore, for her part, criticized the organization’s lack of diversity, charging in a recent interview with Jezebel that “we’ve again seen an organization consolidate power into the hands of a group of men or people who support and act as a mouthpiece for those men.” She went on to point out that Satanism has long been vulnerable to being co-opted by white supremacists.

No, these things are not coincidences. They are the obvious result of a Party that serves the needs of the 1% exclusively

Justin Amash Is Not Alone As A Few Republicans Agree With Him on Impeachment

Unfortunately for the nation, there are very few in Congress in the GOP that have any integrity or courage, so these Susan Collins style "concerned" conservatives will remain silent.

Swing Districts Are Quickly Shifting Toward Supporting Impeachment

From the article:

Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA), a swing district House Democrat, said that the calls to her office have shifted toward supporting impeaching Trump....

Rep. Hill is not the only member of the House from a swing district who is seeing opinion shift on impeachment. If it is happening to Katie Hill, it is happening in other districts right now....

House Democrats need to build a case, not to the hardcore political junkies who have read the Mueller report and watch cable news, but to the broader public who vote every four years but don’t pay that much attention until election time.

In addition:

Americans' support for impeaching Trump rises:

The number of Americans who said President Donald Trump should be impeached rose 5 percentage points to 45 percent since mid-April, while more than half said multiple congressional probes of Trump interfered with important government business, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday.

We see that voters are leaning more toward impeachment than even one month ago.

If the House were to begin an impeachment investigation, with televised hearings to present evidence from the Mueller Report, and interview witnesses, one can safely assume that support for impeachment would grow even more.

And even if the enablers in the GOP refuse to do their duty, the voters can see what should be done.
