If Al Franken had refused to resign, what might have happened?

1)Mitch McConnell could have blocked any investigation and allowed the accusations to continue. A win in his book because the GOP would use the continuing accusations to undermine Franken's work on the Trump investigations.

2) If an investigation had shown that any part of the accusations were true, the GOP would have watched the right wing media attack Franken and many Democrats might still have insisted on his resignation.

3) If Franken had stayed with no investigation, every appearance would have led to questions about the allegations. The US media is not neutral, it is right wing owned and reflects that ownership in editorial bias and general reportorial focus. The focus would be off the Trump investigation and all about Franken.

4) Given how the GOP treated Hillary Clinton during the endless Bengahzi investigations, imagine how many women the GOP would have paraded in front of cameras, again, to deflect from Trump and Moore.

A Muslim perspective on the Masterpiece Cakeshop case

From the article:
Speaking of this case, the author argues:

This interpretation of religious freedom could transform our nation from one where rights are respected and uniformly protected under the law to one where subgroups are identified for discrimination, isolation and exclusion by those who interpret their religion as one that calls for differential treatment of others based on their identity, viewpoint or way of life.

I agree.

On the Franken matter, do you believe in due process or mob rule?

At this point, there are unsubstantiated allegations. And anonymous accusations. So why the rush to find a tree and some rope?

Do we believe in the concept of due process, or do we believe in mob rule and the constantly changing public opinion?

Where have you looked for God, and what were you looking for?

Often one can read a response from an atheist about looking for a deity and not finding any deity, or not finding any evidence of a deity. As if this statement somehow has any probative value in a discussion concerning the existence or non-existence of a deity.

But if you are a non-theist, or an agnostic, have you looked for God?

If you have, was it an intellectual search?

Was it a physical search?

If one were to do a physical search, where would one look?

If one were to do a physical search, what would one look for?

Would one look for a humanoid shaped being, continuing a long human tradition of anthropomorphizing deities?

Would one look for a sentient cloud of energy inhabiting an immense region of space?

Hurricane-force neoliberalism in the Caribbean

From the article:

But Puerto Rico's struggles reach back far beyond this fall. "[T]he devastation of neoliberal policies has made Puerto Rico's crisis following Hurricanes Irma and Maria much, much worse," SW concluded in an editorial.

Because Puerto Rico is held by the U.S. as a "territory," it will be forced to depend on the federal government for the funds and resources needed to rebuild. This will come on top of a debt regime and other aspects of the U.S. colonial relationship with Puerto Rico that set the stage for the island's crisis before the hurricanes hit.

And now, the aftermath of Hurricane Maria will present another opportunity to increase the U.S. government's and Corporate America's control over the lives of the Puerto Rican people.

Capitalists never let a good crisis go to waste, and every crisis can be exploited for profit. The article applies to numerous of the Caribbean islands.

What these Democratic Senators stand for:

I posted this yesterday:

https://www.democraticunderground.com/10029930584

In the link is a list of Democratic Senators who voted for a big gift for Wall Street. One can read the link, but the list is here:

In addition to Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), who typically votes with the caucus, the nine Democratic co-sponsors of Crapo's bill are: Joe Donnelly (Ind.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), John Tester (Mont.), Mark Warner (Va.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Tim Kaine (Va.), Gary Peters (Mich.), and Michael Bennet (Colo.).

Interestingly enough, some of these same Senators appear on another list, the list calling for Al Franken to give up all rights to due process and immediately resign. Those people are:

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.; Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii; Kamala Harris, D-Calif.; Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.; Maggie Hassan, D-N.H.; Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.; Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.; Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.; Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D.; Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev.; Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill.; Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., also issued statements or postings on social media Wednesday calling on Franken to step down.
The 14 women were joined by 14 male Senate Democrats: Schumer, Durbin, and Sens. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Michael Bennet of Colorado, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Tom Carper of Delaware, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Gary Peters of Michigan, Tom Udall of New Mexico and Ron Wyden of Oregon.

Joe Donnelly, Heidi Heitkamp, Michael Bennett, and Gary Peters appear on both lists. What happened to respect for due process Senators?

Are there any cultures without religion?

From the piece:

No, not if we properly define “religion.”
Until very recently in Western history, “religion” was not a separate “thing” apart from a culture’s entire way of life....

Religion does not necessarily involve belief in spiritual beings or gods, but does universally involve the answers a culture develops to the “ultimate questions:” — Why are we here? What is our purpose? Who made us, and why? And, what is the right thing to do?

Edited at 1:52pm on 7 Dec to add: so far 2 examples have been provided of societies with no apparent religion.

With all of these calls for Al Franken to resign, it is appalling how many

are willing to abandon any pretense at due process in their haste to cast that first stone.

And I speak mainly of the Democrats who are demanding that Franken resign before any sort of investigation is even started.

What happened to the concept of presumed innocence?
What happened to the concept of common sense?

At this point, there is a right wing quasi-celebrity who conveniently for Trump, just happened to find some suggestive/ photos as the Russia investigation is heating up. The photos are evidence of crude humor, nothing else, but they served to silence Franken as Trump is under increasing scrutiny.

In my opinion, Franken should wait for the results of an investigation before taking any action.

Yes, we should be better than the GOP, but if we are indeed the party of values we should also recognize the common sense value in only taking action after an investigation.

Mathew 13, and its applicability in philosophy

Christians might be generally be familiar with the parable of the sower and the seed, but for the non-Christians and non-theists here:

Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed.... Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.
Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.

In my view if one is receptive to the message it will resonate with that person, but if one resists the message, the words will bear no fruit.

Some feel that science has all the answers, or that science will one future day provide all of the answers, or that science might one day provide all of the answers. Such a feeling is based on a faith that science will, in fact, provide all of these answers, but such a faith in science is as unprovable as any theistic faith.

Thoughts?

If Trump were to be impeached, indicted, convicted, and imprisoned,

would he still be eligible for Secret Service protection in prison?

I ask because all US Presidents are eligible for lifetime protection. So if the orange con man were by some miracle to be prosecuted and imprisoned, how would the Secret Service protection work for a prisoner?

And would this not be an excellent thing to have to consider?
