McConnell refuses to take questions in Tompkinsville

TOMPKINSVILLE – The day after his campaign manager quit in the wake of an expanding Iowa campaign bribery investigation, Mitch McConnell was posing for photos, shaking hands and riding in the Watermelon Festival Parade here.

What he wasn’t doing was answering a reporter’s questions.

When the reporter approached McConnell aide Terry Carmack about 10 minutes prior to the parade and asked to interview the Republican U.S. Senator, Carmack said, “We’re on a very, very tight schedule.”

After conferring with McConnell, the two men walked away. But McConnell continued shaking hands with other parade participants and posed for a photo or so before walking back to the convertible that was to carry him through downtown Tompkinsville.

Does lack of NKY money mean McConnell’s support down?

While the U.S. Senate race in Kentucky remains close, one party’s candidate has far outraised the other in conservative Northern Kentucky in the past two years – and it’s not who one might think.

In the year’s second quarter, Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes has found Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties very generous to her campaign, earning almost six times as much from the region as her Republican opponent, Sen. Mitch McConnell. Since she entered the race last year, Grimes has received double the amount in campaign contributions from Northern Kentucky that McConnell has, an Enquirer analysis found.

Democrats and Republicans don’t think it will mean the heavily Republican area of Northern Kentucky will go for Grimes, but it might indicate tepid support for McConnell among Republicans.

Some suggest residual resentment over tea party candidate Matt Bevin’s loss to McConnell in the primary might be in play among Republicans in Northern Kentucky. There’s a strong tea party presence in Northern Kentucky, said Brett Gaspard, chairman of the Boone County Republicans.

Kentucky AFL-CIO Says McConnell’s Campaign in Shambles

August 29th, Frankfort – Kentucky AFL-CIO President Bill Londrigan made the following statement in response to news that Sen. Mitch McConnell’s campaign manager, Jesse Benton resigned: “Mitch’s campaign is in shambles. The McConnell campaign is self-destructing from within.

"McConnell's gambit to appeal to tea partiers by hiring Jesse Benton, Ron Paul's former campaign manager, was a serious error. Knowledge of Benton's potential legal and ethical breaches were well known and McConnell's hiring of Benton reveals a serious lack of due diligence. Benton's involvement in illegal campaign activities in Iowa is just the tip of the iceberg for McConnell's campaign. McConnell owes the voters of Kentucky an explanation for hiring Benton and paying him hundreds of thousands of dollars while knowing about his tainted past."

BREAKING: Federal judge blocks TX law that would stop abortions at majority of facilities statewide.

https://twitter.com/AP/status/505473076340219905

---

AUSTIN – A federal judge struck down a key piece of Texas's tough new abortion law Friday afternoon, just three days before its implementation was expected to force all but seven clinics in the state to close.

U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel ruled that requiring abortion facilities to comply with the standards of ambulatory surgical centers would reduce access so much that it would put an unconstitutional burden on Texas women seeking the procedure.

"The ambulatory-surgical-center requirement is unconstiutional because it imposes an undue burden on the right of women throughout Texas to seek a previabilty abortion," Yeakel ruled, blocking enforcement of the requirement scheduled to take effect Monday.

The ruling represents a major victory for a coalition of abortion providers who challenged the law, but it may be a short-lived triumph. The case is expected to be appealed, and the providers will have to hope to avoid a repeat of last fall, when Yeakel struck down a different part of the law only to have his decision quickly reversed by the Fifth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals.
