The Republicans’ new talking point, unveiled yesterday by Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader, in an appearance on ABC News’ This Week, is that a bipartisan approach to enacting the stimulus package is important because Republican senators “represent half the American population.”

Now, that didn’t sound right, given that most of America’s big states have two Democratic senators. So I did a quick-and-dirty calculation of how many Americans the senators in each party represent, assuming that each senator represents all of the people in his or her state and that the currently open Senate seats (like Delaware, Illinois, and New York) will be filled by someone from the same party. And what you find, if you do the math, is that Republican senators actually represent about thirty-seven per cent of Americans.

Je suis français-américain et j'habite aux états-unis depuis 25 ans. Je n'utilise pas le français écrit ou parlé régulièrement, mon épouse est américaine, mes enfants aussi et ils ne parlent pas le Français couramment.

Par conséquent, je me rends compte que j'ai perdu l'habitude d'écrire avec les accents placés correctement. Non seulement ça, j'ai aussi des difficultés à m'exprimer spontanément dans ma langue natale.

Cela m'inquiète beaucoup. Lorsque je visite en France et que je suis en famille, j'hésite pendant quelque jours avant de pouvoir facilement trouver mes mots. Si je rentrais en France pour une offre d'emploi, je ne suis pas sur que je serais capable de m'exprimer dans le language "business" français. Toute ma carrière s'est faite aux états-unis, je ne connais pas du tout le jargon français dans mon domaine professionnel.

First of, let me state that of course it is a life saver for many people and that volunteers who help on their own time with their boats, vehicles, etc are to be praised.

What I am conflicted about is what this reveals. Are we being groomed to expect that the government wont be able to provide these basic needs and that one has to pull oneselves by the bootstraps ?

Trump already indicated he wanted to cut the budget for noaa, the cost guards, fema, etc.. When asked recently why he is not staffing federal agencies adequately he replied that its by design as they are trying to shrink the government.

Back in the context of the texas disaster, I did not hear that fema had even prepositioned assets beforehand.
You would think getting high water vehicles and boats is something that could have been planned ahead of time for example.
