NASA's Curiosity Rover Captures a Martian Day, From Dawn to Dusk
CURIOSITY NEWS | December 28, 2023
When NASAs Curiosity Mars rover isnt on the move, it works pretty well as a sundial, as seen in two black-and-white videos recorded on Nov. 8, the 4,002nd Martian day, or sol, of the mission. The rover captured its own shadow shifting across the surface of Mars using its black-and-white Hazard-Avoidance Cameras, or Hazcams.
Instructions to record the videos were part of the last set of commands beamed up to Curiosity just before the start of Mars solar conjunction, a period when the Sun is between Earth and Mars. Because plasma from the Sun can interfere with radio communications, missions hold off on sending commands to Mars spacecraft for several weeks during this time. (The missions werent totally out of contact: They still radioed back regular health check-ins throughout conjunction.)
Rover drivers normally rely on Curiositys Hazcams to spot rocks, slopes, and other hazards that may be risky to traverse. But because the rovers other activities were intentionally scaled back just prior to conjunction, the team decided to use the Hazcams to record 12 hours of snapshots for the first time, hoping to capture clouds or dust devils that could reveal more about the Red Planets weather.

NASA finds clue while solving Voyager 1's communication breakdown case
By Robert Lea published 1 day ago
An outlier signal has brought ground control closer to decoding the troubling problem.
NASA engineers are a step closer to solving the communication problem that left the Voyager 1 spacecraft, which presently sits outside the solar system, unable to send usable data back to Earth.
In 2012, Voyager 1 became the first human-made object to leave the solar system and enter interstellar space. For 11 years following this achievement, the spacecraft dutifully sent data to ground control. This was data that detailed how space works beyond the influence of the sun. In Nov. 2023, however, Voyager 1's communications with ground operators stopped making sense.
To be clear, however, Voyager 2, which followed its spacecraft sibling out of the solar system in 2018, is still operational and communicating with Earth.

The DOJ has opened a criminal investigation into the Alaska Airlines 737 blowout, a report says
BY GENE JOHNSON
Updated 1:26 PM EDT, March 10, 2024
SEATTLE (AP) The Department of Justice has launched a criminal investigation into the Boeing jetliner blowout that left a gaping hole on an Alaska Airlines plane this January, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.
Citing documents and people familiar with the matter, the newspaper said investigators have contacted some passengers and crew including pilots and flight attendants who were on the Jan. 5th flight.
The Boeing plane used by Alaska Airlines suffered the blowout seven minutes after takeoff from Portland, Oregon, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing. Boeing has been under increased scrutiny since the incident, when a panel that plugged a space left for an extra emergency door blew off a Max 9 jet. There were no serious injuries.

2024 House Republicans Create 'Death Panel' For Social Security
No, Really! It's like they want a death panel for their re-elections, too!
By Jessica Corbett March 9, 2024
Congressional Democrats and other defenders of Social Security and Medicare responded with alarm after U.S. House Budget Committee Republicans on Thursday advanced a sweeping resolution that includes support for a fiscal commission intended to gut the crucial programs.
While Chair Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) celebrated the committee's passage of the Concurrent Resolution on the Budget for Fiscal Year 2025, Ranking Member Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) declared that "today, we saw just how backward and extreme House Republicans' vision for the future really is."
"We saw just how willing Republicans are to sell out American families in order to continue giving trillions in tax cuts to price-gouging corporations and the ultrarich," Boyle said. "And we saw just how hellbent they are on gutting critical programsraising the cost of living and pushing the middle class out of reach for hardworking families."

GOP Loves Ribbon Cuttings For Projects They Voted Against
The vote no and take the dough House GOP rides again!
By Joan McCarter March 7, 2024
House Republicans will suck up $4.5 billion for pet projects in their districts, also known as earmarks, in the upcoming spending bills that most of them will probably vote against. House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi called them the vote no and take the dough caucus back in 2021, and theyre doing their best to prove her right.
The first of the funding bills for fiscal year 2024 is slated to be on the House floor Wednesday, coming under a suspension of the rules, which means it bypasses the House Rules Committee and wont be open for amendments. Thats because House GOP leadership cant get through the Rules Committee to do it under regular order. Thats been the case on all of the funding bills since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy handed the committee over to the extremists.
That means that the package will likely pass Wednesday in the House with mostly Democratic votes, barring a disaster or major revolt from the right that gives Johnson cold feet. House Republicans have sucked up much of that earmarked money, which they now call community funding projects, and they will go home to their constituents and brag in their reelection ads about the money theyre bringing home. What they wont say is that they relied on Democrats to get it done.

Boeing discloses names of 737 MAX employees after NTSB chair faults cooperation

WASHINGTON, March 6 (Reuters) - Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab on Wednesday provided U.S. regulators with the names of employees on its 737 MAX door team after lawmakers and a federal safety official sharply criticized the planemaker's failure to do so at a Senate hearing.
National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy had said earlier on Wednesday that Boeing had failed to supply the employee names and some key records sought in the agency's ongoing investigation into the Jan. 5 Alaska Airlines (ALK.N), opens new tab 737 MAX 9 mid-air cabin door plug emergency.
Homendy said at the Senate Commerce Committee hearing that investigators sought the names of the 25 people who work on door plugs at a Boeing facility in Renton, Washington, and had begun a week of interviews on Sunday. "It is absurd that two months later we don't have it," she said.

I don't know if people fully understand what it takes to work on a plane, but let me say, that I built a strategic bomber, I have worked on every plane / jet produced from 1970-2001 on line maintenance, and every time we removed or installed a fucking part we had to document what we did, then we had inspection verify if it was required for safety of flight and then the Quality control wwould make sure that all work was performed as certified and the then the FAA would look to make sure that the ATA procedures was covered............
Trump warns he could be open to blackmail if U.S. Supreme Court doesn't grant immunity
By Matthew Chapman
Published March 4, 2024 3:07 PM ET
In a series of posts to his Truth Social platform on Monday, former President Donald Trump appeared to suggest that he'll be open to blackmail if the Supreme Court upholds lower court decisions that he does not have immunity from criminal prosecution for actions taken as president.
Trump has argued the office of president means he can't face criminal prosecution.
It's an effort to try to block charges filed against him by special counsel Jack Smith in the federal election conspiracy case, related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential results culminating in the January 6 attack.

JFC the traitor is basically admitting that he can be bought..................for a price...........and this still need to be laid at the feet of the republican senate for "not" convicting this head insurrectionist, not once but twice ............and then what's really classic there if not all 6 of the republican US Supreme Court whatever you want to call themselves have taken "favors" of some sort and, as the old saying goes when you have favors done for you, there is pay back when being asked because of that "favor" .....
'Astonishing and unprecedented': Conservative slams SCOTUS decision on Trump ballot
By Matthew Chapman
Published March 4, 2024 5:37 PM ET
The Supreme Court's decision to restore former President Donald Trump to the ballot in Colorado and shut down any state decisions on Fourteenth Amendment disqualification was wrong, argued retired federal Judge Michael Luttig on CNN Monday.
Luttig, widely regarded as one of the founding intellectuals behind the modern-day conservative legal movement, has long been one of the strongest proponents of Colorado's decision, which had held that the Fourteenth Amendment's Insurrection Clause bars the former president from the ballot for his incitement of the January 6 attack.
"Judge Luttig, you predicted that the Supreme Court would affirm Colorado's decision to remove Trump from the ballot, calling Colorado's decision 'unassailable in every single respect under the Constitution,'" said anchor Jake Tapper. "I guess the justices didn't see it your way. What's your reaction?"
