July 29 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that an African initiative could be a basis for peace in Ukraine but that Ukrainian attacks made it hard to realise.

He was speaking at a press conference after meeting African leaders in St Petersburg on Friday and hearing their calls for Moscow to move ahead with their plan.

"There are provisions of this peace initiative that are being implemented," he said. "But there are things that are difficult or impossible to implement."

Pharma Greed Leads To Over 300 Active Shortages Of Generic Drugs

Blame capitalism? Why hundreds of decades-old yet vital drugs are nearly impossible to find

By The Conversation — July 29, 2023
Geoffrey Joyce, University of Southern California

Past public ire over high drug prices has recently taken a back seat to a more insidious problem – no drugs at any price.

Patients and their providers increasingly face limited or nonexistent supplies of drugs, many of which treat essential conditions such as cancer, heart disease and bacterial infections. The American Society of Health System Pharmacists now lists over 300 active shortages, primarily of decades-old generic drugs no longer protected by patents.

While this is not a new problem, the number of drugs in short supply has increased in recent years, and the average shortage is lasting longer, with more than 15 critical drug products in short supply for over a decade. Current shortages include widely known drugs such as the antibiotic amoxicillin; the heart medicine digoxin; the anesthetic lidocaine; and the medicine albuterol, which is critical for treating asthma and other diseases affecting the lungs and airways.

It cannot be said enough, that when the house Democrats brought two cases

to the republican senate jury to remove the malignant narcissistic traitor from office or from even running for office they (republicans ) were given the means to remove and vote him to be held accountable in the first impeachment it cannot again be said enough that 47 republicans voted Not Guilty in first Article of Impeachment, Abuse of Power.....in the second Article, Obstruction of Congress 48 senate republicans voted Not Guilty, then there is the case that was brought before the senate again..... Article I (Incitement of insurrection), Note: the republicans still had power in the senate....43 republicans voted Not Guilty, which fell two votes short to Impeach that lame duck traitor, that was carting off classified documents to every rat infested home he goes too...

The media is on there countdown indictment watch, the media in my opinion should be telling the public, that the republicans were give not one but two / three times the opportunity to have this (traitor) from ever being whatever he wants to turn this country into......this is just amazing and the media should be pigeon holing those senators that are still in office to explain themselves.

The Democrats did there job when they had the power to hold him and others accountable, and yes the past actions from the republican controlled senate are holding this country hostage has we are currently watching what the lack of past actions from republicans that which occurred play out on the tube every night.... today.....

I need a gin and tonic.....

'Acting like a guilty person': Rep. Swalwell destroys Trump's argument for trial delay

By Gideon Rubin

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Ca.) suggested on Friday that if Donald Trump wants to convince the public that’s he’s the innocent victim of political persecution as he proclaims, the former president isn't doing a very good job.

Swalwell during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut with Joy Reid” said Trump’s efforts to delay his Florida trial in the classified documents case don’t reflect the actions of an innocent men.

“I want to make a point that Jack Smith can't make… which is if Donald Trump was so innocent, and this prosecution was so rigged, wouldn’t an innocent person subjected to a rigged prosecution crawl through glass and walk over fire to exercise their speedy trial right?” Swalwell said.

Trump is 'a federal problem': Ex-prosecutor shows why Jack Smith's case must go first

By Gideon Rubin

A former federal prosecutor on Friday suggested that local district attorneys put their cases against Donald Trump on hold so federal prosecutors can do the heavy lifting.

Glenn Kirschner during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut with Joy Reid” noted that federal prosecutors have resources that dwarf those of local jurisdictions.

“The prevailing wisdom is the feds will ordinarily try to go to trial first,” Kirschner said. “Now that is no disrespect intended to state prosecutors district attorneys. But I think everybody recognizes that the federal government has more resources. The federal government has an unrivaled conviction rate. I can argue both sides of whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but they do because they only take the strongest cases to trial." Trump has already been indicted by special counsel Jack Smith in the Florida classified documents case and in New York State by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on allegations he paid hush money to Stormy Daniels to hide an illicit affair.

Here's 'master chess player' Jack Smith's plan to deal with Aileen Cannon: legal expert

By Matthew Chapman
Published July 21, 2023, 7:53 PM ET

After extensive back-and-forth between special counsel Jack Smith and former President Donald Trump's legal team, Judge Aileen Cannon finally ordered the trial date in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case to be set for May 20 — later than the December date Smith argued for, but also a rejection of Trump's demand to delay the trial indefinitely.

But many legal experts have worried this might not be the end of it. Cannon, a Trump appointee who has faced controversy for legally indefensible rulings giving Trump preferential treatment, could simply be using this as a baseline to give Trump time to file more delay tactics, potentially pushing the trial back further or even past the 2024 election altogether.

But Smith has prepared for that scenario, argued former House impeachment counsel Norm Eisen on CNN Friday. He has another trick up his sleeve: namely, the January 6 investigation.

Ta-Nehisi Coates gatecrashes meeting as school board discusses banning his book: report

By Sky Palma
Published July 18, 2023, 3:13 PM ET

A South Carolina school board meeting got a surprise visit from journalist and author Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose book community members were railing against, The Daily Beast reported.

The Lexington-Richland District 5 School Board convened on Monday to discuss outrage over Coates’ 2015 nonfiction bestseller, "Between the World and Me," which has been placed on book ban lists, according to The Beast.

Previous reports say the book, which is an essay to Coates’ son to prepare him for the life he will live as a Black man, was removed from the curriculum after students said it made them feel “guilty for being white."

Ron Johnson Not Willing To Put His Money Where His Mouth Is

Senator Ron Johnson claims he wants to save Social Security but he doesn't want to pay for it.

By Chris capper Liebenthal — July 15, 2023

It's a well known fact that Senator Ron Johnson wants to cut Social Security and even privatize it. However, despite this being common knowledge, RoJo keeps up the pretense that he really, really wants to save it.

The answer to the Social Security issue is simple - make the rich pay their fair share. Right now, they only pay up to a certain amount of income and don't have to pay any more no matter how much money they make, often off the backs of their employees.

But when push came to shove, RoJo showed his true colors again and sided with the rich:
