Trump's USDA fights court ruling protecting food benefits during pandemic

Source: Reuters

BUSINESS NEWS MAY 13, 2020 / 4:07 PM / UPDATED 8 MINUTES AGO

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Trump administration, aiming to tighten rules for federal food benefits, has appealed a federal judge’s ruling that temporarily enabled hundreds of thousands of people to maintain food stamp benefits during the coronavirus pandemic, according to court documents.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, provides free food to 36 million Americans. During the pandemic, millions of U.S. residents have lost jobs, and thousands have waited in lines at food banks.

Last year, Congress blocked a Trump administration-backed effort to tighten the rules through the Farm Bill. Since then, the administration has tried changing rules at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the program.

Critics said the appeal will hurt poor Americans, noting that last month the U.S. economy lost 20.5 million jobs, the steepest plunge in payrolls since the Great Depression.

New GOP poll shows Trump in big trouble in must-win Georgia

Source: American Independent

By Emily Singer -May 13, 2020 11:00 AM

Biden is tied with Trump in Georgia, in yet another sign Trump's reelection campaign is struggling.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is in a dead heat with Donald Trump in Georgia, according to the results of polling of voters conducted last week on behalf of a political action committee supporting Georgia's Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

The results of the internal poll show Biden with 47% to Trump's 46%, with a 4-point margin of error, in a state that last voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in 1992.

Other poll results show Trump tied with Biden or trailing him in three key Rust Belt states he won in 2016: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

If he loses those states, Trump's reelection hopes would already be dashed, assuming Biden wins the rest of the states Hillary Clinton carried.

GOP senator: 'I smell the stench of politics' in states trying to stay safe

By Oliver Willis -May 13, 2020 12:13 PM

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) called on Americans to look at the pandemic through a 'prism of optimism.'

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) told Fox News on Wednesday that he "smells the stench of politics" in the decision-making of Democratic governors who have resisted reopening their states before coronavirus guidelines say it's safe to do so.

Echoing other Republicans who have advanced baseless conspiracy theories, Scott said the governors were acting in order to influence "election results" and not out of concern for public health and safety.

Scott also argued that the public should look at the pandemic, which has killed over 82,300 Americans, through a "prism of optimism."

Experts have repeatedly warned about reopening states before the data shows conditions are safe enough. In testimony before the Senate on Tuesday, at which Scott was in attendance as a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Dr. Anthony Fauci said reopening states too early could lead to "spikes that might turn into outbreaks."

GOP Senators Follow Grenell's Cue On Flynn 'Unmasking,' Ask For Obama Admin Names

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Josh Kovensky

May 13, 2020 11:15 a.m.

Senate Republicans asked Attorney General Bill Barr and acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell for a list of Obama administration officials at the center of a right-wing conspiracy theory, days after Grenell declassified their identities.

Picking up on a decision by Grenell this week to declassify the names of Obama officials who asked to learn the identity of an American citizen flagged in intelligence reports, Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) followed on, asking that Grenell and Barr give them the names.

The American citizen who was "unmasked" by the requests was former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The Trump administration dropped the charges to which Flynn had pleaded guilty last week, in a stunning example of politicization at the Justice Department.

Intelligence reports that capture the activities of U.S. citizens typically redact the identity of those Americans. Top-level officials can ask for those identities to be revealed, in a confidential process -- "unmasking" them.

Paul Doubles Down On Dig At Fauci: 'We Have To Take With A Grain Of Salt These Experts'

By Cristina Cabrera

May 13, 2020 10:44 a.m.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Tuesday night stood by the biting comments he made to top White House COVID-19 task force official Dr. Anthony Fauci earlier in the day about the doctor’s opinion that it would be premature to reopen the country right now.

“I don’t question Dr. Fauci’s motives,” the GOP senator told Fox News host Martha MacCallum, also describing the doctor as “a good person” who “wants what’s best for the country.”

“But he’s an extremely cautious person, and I don’t think any of these experts are omniscient,” Paul added. “I think that they have a basis of knowledge, but when you prognosticate about the future or when you advocate for things dramatic and drastic, like closing all the schools, you should look at all the information.”

Paul argued that “we really need to have competition among the experts,” pointing to British epidemiologist Neil Ferguson’s projection that 2.2 million people would die from COVID-19 within as an example of a health professional offering faulty information.

Some sheriffs are refusing to enforce virus safety orders

By Josh Israel -May 12, 2020 4:50 PM
'The impacts of COVID 19 no longer warrant the suspension of our constitutional rights,' stated a county sheriff in Washington state.

Shiawassee County Sheriff Brian BeGole, a Republican in central Michigan, announced on Monday that he and his deputies will not enforce Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's stay-at-home order. He is the latest of a growing number of law enforcement officials who say they will simply ignore the social distancing rules instituted by governors and aimed at reducing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in their states.

"With limited resources, staffing and facilities, our priority focus will be on enforcing duly passed laws for the protection of Shiawassee County citizens," BeGole wrote in a letter posted to the Shiawassee County Sheriff's Office's official Facebook page. "I have decided, within my authority, that our office cannot and will not divert our primary resources and efforts towards enforcement of ... Governor Whitmer's executive orders."

Other sheriffs have in recent years taken it upon themselves to announce they will not enforce rules and laws they disagree with. The Southern Poverty Law Center notes the existence of a right-wing anti-government organization called the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, which claims to have backing from hundreds of sheriffs and says it is "the last line of defense standing between the overreaching government and your Constitutionally guaranteed rights." More recently, as states have enacted gun safety measures and red-flag laws to temporarily disarm those deemed a danger to themselves or others, some sheriffs have declared their communities to be "Second Amendment sanctuaries" where those laws will not be upheld.

Now, as right-wing activists mobilize to end stay-at-home orders and business closures, several sheriffs are standing in opposition to the orders of their governors.

Airlines are having trouble enforcing their face mask policies

Source: CNN

By Pete Muntean, CNN Business

Updated 9:59 AM ET, Wed May 13, 2020

Washington (CNN Busness)Plans from several major US airlines on how to enforce their mandatory mask requirements reveal that, for the most part, they will rely on passenger cooperation rather than strict enforcement.

Separate memos obtained by CNN that American Airlines (AAL) sent to its pilots and flight attendants show that customers may be denied boarding for not wearing a mask. But once on the plane "the face covering policy will become more lenient" and "the flight attendant's role is informational, not enforcement," the pilot memo reads. It was first obtained by Reuters.

The American Airlines flight attendant memo describes how they should handle customers who don't comply with the policy: "please encourage them to comply, but do not escalate further. Likewise, if a customer is frustrated by another customer's lack of face covering, please use situational awareness to de-escalate the situation."

Like the American Airlines' policy, United (UAL) makes exceptions for a variety of reasons including medical conditions. Its policy also points to avoiding confrontation.

This is falling at the feet of the airlines, this is BS, the FAA, TSA and Customs, the CDC should be having a talk about this issue, this is life or death issue, you can always find excuses and as for the terminal is not owned by the airline, it is leased, it is owned by the regional authority and everything on that property is enforced by the police, customs and the FAA........this is just amazing

Mitch McConnell blames Obama for Trump's failed pandemic response

By Emily Singer -May 12, 2020 9:28 AM

It has been widely reported that the Obama administration left Trump a 69-page pandemic playbook.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell went on a Trump campaign live stream Monday night and falsely claimed that former President Barack Obama left Donald Trump without any plan to handle a future pandemic.

"Clearly the Obama administration did not leave to this administration, any kind of game plan for something like this," McConnell said in an interview with Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump.

That claim is untrue.

The Obama administration quite literally left Trump with a pandemic playbook — which Trump ignored.
