'They're on,' Trump says of tariffs set to kick in on Sunday

WASHINGTON (AP) Expect a direct hit on many U.S. consumers from President Donald Trumps latest round of tariffs on Chinese imports. He had no intention of pulling back on import taxes set to kick in Sunday.
Theyre on. Theyre on, the president told reporters Friday before departing for a weekend stay at Camp David.
Americans were largely spared from higher prices in his previous rounds of trade penalties. No longer. The 15% tariffs on $112 billion in Chinese imports will apply to items ranging from smartwatches and TVs to shoes, diapers, sporting goods and meat and dairy products.
For the first time since Trump launched his trade war, American households faced price increases. Many U.S. companies said they would be forced to pass on to customers the higher prices they had to pay on Chinese imports.

Motorsport mourns after F2 driver Anthoine Hubert dies
By JEROME PUGMIRE an hour ago
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium (AP) Motorsport is mourning the death of Formula Two driver Anthoine Hubert, who was killed following a heavy crash at the Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Frenchman died following an estimated 160 mph (257 kph) collision with U.S. driver Juan-Manuel Correas car as they exited a corner on Lap 2 at the high-speed Spa-Francorchamps track, which just hours earlier saw qualifying for Sundays Formula One race.
Both Huberts and Correas cars were severed in two following the crash, with Correas car flipped upside down. Huberts car sustained a huge impact and span around violently, as did Correas, as debris from both cars was sprayed all over the track. Medics rushed to reach them on the 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) track located in the Ardennes forest.
As other drivers swerved around the mangled wreckage of both cars, the race was canceled a few minutes later.

Hong Kong police storm subway with batons as protests rage
Source: Associated Press
By KEN MORITSUGU and RAF WOBER 2 hours ago
HONG KONG (AP) Protesters in Hong Kong threw gasoline bombs at government headquarters and set fires in the streets on Saturday, while police stormed a subway car and hit passengers with batons and pepper spray in scenes that seem certain to inflame tensions further in a city riven by nearly three months of pro-democracy demonstrations.
Police had denied permission for a march to mark the fifth anniversary of a decision by China against fully democratic elections in Hong Kong, but protesters took to the streets anyway, as they have all summer. They provoked and obstructed the police repeatedly but generally retreated once riot officers moved in, avoiding some of the direct clashes that characterized earlier protests.
Late at night, though, video from Hong Kong broadcaster TVB showed police using batons while on the platform of Prince Edward subway station and swinging batons at passengers who backed into one end of a train car behind umbrellas. The video also shows pepper spray being shot through an open door at a group seated on the floor while one man holds up his hands.
It wasnt clear if all the passengers were protesters. Police said they entered the station to arrest offenders after protesters assaulted others and damaged property inside. The TVB video was widely shared on social media as another example of police brutality during the protests. Angry crowds gathered outside Prince Edward and nearby Mongkok station, where police said they made arrests after protesters vandalized the customer service center and damaged ticket machines.

The standing committee of Chinas legislature ruled on Aug. 31, 2014, that Hong Kong residents could elect their leader directly, but that the candidates would have to be approved by a nominating committee.
The decision failed to satisfy democracy advocates in Hong Kong and led to the 79-day long Occupy Central protests that fall, in which demonstrators camped out on major streets in the financial district and other parts of the city.
The participants in the religious march Saturday were peaceful and mostly older than the younger protesters who have led this summers movement and, in some cases, blocked streets and battled police with bricks, sticks and gasoline bombs
Religious meetings do not require police approval, though authorities said late Friday that organizers of a procession with more than 30 people must notify police.
Does anyone see a problem with this communist government saying this BS:
"Chinas legislature ruled on Aug. 31, 2014, that Hong Kong residents could elect their leader directly, but that the candidates would have to be approved by a nominating committee."
Sounds like gas-lighting..........................

LONDON/BELFAST (Reuters) - Thousands of people across Britain and Northern Ireland protested on Saturday against Prime Minister Boris Johnsons decision to suspend parliament for about a month before the deadline for the country to leave the European Union.
Johnson has pledged to take Britain out of the EU on Oct. 31 with or without a deal on future relations with the bloc. The move to shut parliament for around a month in the period before that will hinder efforts by his opponents to stop him.
About 2,000 people gathered outside his office in Downing Street, chanting: Liar Johnson, shame on you!
A sign read: #StopTheCoup. Defend our Democracy. Save our future.

The Federalist Society Says It's Not an Advocacy Organization. We Found Documents Showing Otherwise.

Amanda Hollis-Brusky is an associate professor of politics at Pomona College and author of Ideas With Consequences: The Federalist Society and the Conservative Counterrevolution.
Calvin TerBeek is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at the University of Chicago.
This past March, when the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies held its 37th annual national gathering for conservative law students, the lineup of speakers and panelists included an impressive number of Republican Party and conservative movement stars.
All four of the conferences main panels were chaired by active Republican-appointed federal appeals court judges. Amul Thapara protégé of Senator Mitch McConnell who nearly wouldnt speak to his own father upon finding out he had voted for Barack Obama, his father saiddirected one panel. Edith Jones, a long-time 5th Circuit judge considered too conservative for the Supreme Court by the George H.W. Bush administration, moderated another. Elizabeth Branch, a recent appointee of President Donald Trump to the 11th Circuit and former senior official in the George W. Bush administration, moderated the third panel, while fellow Trump appointee to the 6th Circuit John B. Nalbandian moderated the fourth. And the keynote was a fireside chat between former GOP Senator Jon Kyl and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, a fellow Republican.
Despite what appears to be an obvious political valence, the Federalist Society and its high-profile members have long insisted the nonprofit organization does not endorse any political party or engage in other forms of political advocacy, as its website says. The society does not deny an ideologyit calls itself a group of conservatives and libertariansbut it maintains that it is simply about ideas, not legislation, politicians or policy positions.
Federalist Society documents that one of us recently unearthed, however, make this position untenable going forward. The documents, made public here for the first time, show that the society not only has held explicit ideological goals since its infancy in the early 1980s, but sought to apply those ideological goals to legal policy and political issues through the groups roundtables, symposia and conferences.

Watch Chris Hayes' epic takedown of GOP congressman fighting to maintain minority rule in America
Published 2 hours ago on August 30, 2019

MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes demolished a Republican congressman from Texas for fighting against the concept of one person, one vote.
So the Republicans this week were attacking
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and in their defense, they do that every week. I dont know why. She drives them nuts for some reason, Hayes explained to the live studio audience and TV viewers.
This week they were attacking her because she went after an institution that has become kind of sacred, I think, to Republicans, and thats the Electoral College, he explained.
AOCs argument was basically that the Electoral College unfairly diminishes the voting power of some Americans and therefore is incompatible with our basic democratic commitments. That was the argument, Hayes explained. Republicans flipped out, all right. They went after her very hard.

Dior's fragrance ad draws criticism for featuring Native American tropes
The Sauvage video has been called deeply offensive and racist and the fashion brand has removed it from social media
Dior is facing backlash for promoting its perfume line Sauvage with an advertisement featuring Native American imagery.
The fashion brand teased the ad, which stars actor Johnny Depp, on Twitter on Friday as an authentic journey deep into the Native American soul in a sacred, founding and secular territory. It has since deleted the tweet and all references to the campaign on social media.
An extended video promoting the $150 fragrance shows Depp walking amid the red rocks of south-western Utah, stacking rocks to mark his path, as a Native American fancy war dancer Canku One Star, a Rosebud Sioux member, performs on cliff and a young woman, portrayed by Canadian actor of First Nations descent Tanaya Beatty, follows Depp from a distance.
Depp also whips out a guitar and plays a famous riff by Shawnee guitarist Link Wray.
