EU tells Britain: There will be no renegotiation of Brexit deal

LONDON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union will not renegotiate the Brexit deal that Prime Minister Theresa May agreed, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Tuesday, as concerns grew that a successor to May could trigger a confrontation with the bloc.

Brexit is up in the air after May announced plans to step down, triggering a leadership contest in the ruling Conservative Party that could bring a new prime minister to power who wants a much more decisive break with the EU.

One of the candidates, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said it would be “political suicide” to pursue a no-deal Brexit, a reprimand to frontrunner Boris Johnson who said last week that Britain should leave with or without a deal by the end of October.

Hunt, who voted to stay in the EU in the 2016 referendum but now accepts Brexit, said he would try for a new agreement that would take Britain out of the EU customs union while “respecting legitimate concerns” around the Irish border.

The EU, though, said there would be no renegotiation.

“I will have a short meeting with Theresa May, but I was crystal clear: There will be no renegotiation,” Juncker said before a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said he believed the risk of Britain crashing out of the bloc without any divorce agreement was growing.

A decade after the crash, Barclays bets again on bundling U.S. home loans

LONDON (Reuters) - Ten years on from the global financial crisis caused by a crash in bonds tied to U.S. home loans, Britain’s Barclays is betting a return to that market can bring in bumper revenues to fortify its investment bank.

After the crisis, banks initially shunned the business of selling and trading slices of loans tied to residential property, autos or commercial real estate, as such securitizations were demonized for their role in the crash.

But now Barclays is preparing to make its comeback, having assembled a team of over 140 securitization bankers and traders with plans to hire more as investors clamor for the higher returns such deals offer compared with traditional stocks and bonds.

Having pared back its securitization business in recent years amid a wider restructuring, Barclays’ head of global markets Stephen Dainton said the time was right for the British bank to re-enter the market in force.

A report by the U.S. Treasury in October 2017 prompted by an executive order from President Donald Trump backed the view that post-crisis regulation of the sector went too far.

“The result has been to dampen the attractiveness of securitization, potentially cutting off or raising the cost of credit to thousands of corporate and retail consumers,” the report said. It recommended loosening the capital requirements for banks underwriting securitizations.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The former British spy who produced a dossier describing alleged links between Donald Trump and Russia will not cooperate with a prosecutor assigned by U.S. Attorney General William Barr to review how the investigations of Trump and his 2016 election campaign began, a source with knowledge of the situation said.

Christopher Steele, a former Russia expert for the British spy agency MI6, will not answer questions from prosecutor John Durham, named by Barr to examine the origins of the investigations into Trump and his campaign team, said the source close to Steele’s London-based private investigation firm, Orbis Business Intelligence.

Trump has given Barr broad authority to declassify intelligence materials related to the investigations. Last week Trump ordered the heads of U.S. spy and law enforcement agencies to cooperate with Durham.

Steele, who had previously collaborated with the FBI on issues such as corruption in the global soccer organization FIFA, was hired in 2016 by Fusion GPS, a Washington-based private investigations firm working for lawyers representing the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

GOP senators vow to let Trump off the hook no matter what crimes he's committed

By Emily Singer -
May 28, 2019

Senate Republicans say they'll quash any articles of impeachment against Trump, no matter what the evidence shows.

Senate Republicans have vowed that Trump will face no punishment if the House draws up articles of impeachment — no matter what the evidence shows,

The House has yet to begin impeachment proceedings, but if it were to file articles of impeachment, the Senate would then have to hold a trial to determine whether Trump is guilty of the charges and decide whether to remove him from office.

According to a report from the Hill newspaper published Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — who runs the Senate with a 53-47 Republican majority in the chamber — would hold a sham trial that would acquit Trump of the charges, no matter what the charges are or how strong the evidence against Trump is.

McConnell and Senate Republicans "have the power to set the rules and ensure the briefest of trials," and they are already set on the plan of dismissing impeachment proceedings, the Hill wrote.

Remembering the US soldiers who refused orders to murder Native Americans at Sand Creek

By The Conversation - May 27, 2019

Every Thanksgiving weekend for the past 18 years, Arapaho and Cheyenne youth lead a 180-mile relay from the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site to Denver.

The annual Sand Creek Massacre Spiritual Healing Run opens at the site of the Sand Creek Massacre near Eads, Colorado, with a sunrise ceremony honoring some 200 Arapaho and Cheyenne people who lost their lives in the infamous massacre. This brutal assault was carried out by Colonel John Chivington on Nov. 29, 1864.

While the Sand Creek massacre has been the subject of numerous books, much less attention has been given to two heroes of this horrific event: U.S. soldiers Captain Silas Soule and Lt. Joseph Cramer.

These were men who rejected the violence and genocide inherent in the “conquest of the West.” They did so by personally refusing to take part in the murder of peaceful people, while ordering the men under their command to stand down. Their example breaks the conventional frontier narrative that has come to define the clash between Colonial settlers and Native peoples as one of civilization versus savagery.

As lone GOP congressman delays disaster funds, Oklahoma drowns

Rep. Chip Roy blocked disaster funding, citing deficit concerns and a lack of funds for border security. Meanwhile, states across the midwest braced for more strong weather.

May 27, 2019, 3:00 pm Updated: May 27, 2019, 3:41 pm

Deadly floods and tornadoes continued to wrack Oklahoma over the weekend, killing at least two people and leaving thousands without power, after Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Friday declared an emergency in all of the state’s 77 counties.

The declaration by Stitt came the same day Congress shot down a $19.1 billion disaster relief package after a lone GOP representative objected.

“Our nation is strong enough and compassionate enough to have a responsive and fiscally responsive approach to help people who are hurting in the wake of natural disasters,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said on the House floor as he delayed the funding measure.

The funding package specifically addresses ongoing costs from Hurricanes Michael and Florence, but several of its provisions would also provide relief for floods or tornadoes across the country in 2019.

A Trump official admitted she 'doesn't care' about following the law

Lynne Patton is one of several administration officials to flout the Hatch Act.

A Trump administration official has shrugged off a law meant to stop federal employees from using their positions for political gain.

“I honestly don’t care anymore,” said Lynne Patton of the Hatch Act. Patton heads the largest regional office at Housing and Urban Development, and she made the comments in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Patton was discussing a tweet by the account @Education4Libs that she shared Wednesday from her private and official HUD Twitter accounts. The tweet lit into liberals for what it said is a double-standard for Rep. Alexandria Ocasa-Cortez (D-NY) and HUD Secretary Ben Carson.

“I find it funny how liberals will laugh & mock Ben Carson for a simple miscommunication yet praise Ocasio-Cortez as if she’s a genius,” the tweet read. “One of them is a brain surgeon who separated conjoined twins at the heads & the other just figured out what a garbage disposal is. Case closed.”

Hey Patten, your "guys" are fucking demagogues and should be LOCKED UP with and for criminal intent, and as for you admitting that you don't give a shit about the Hatch Act and your criminal intent, in violation of the laws, you also should be in fucking JAIL.
And as for your "guy" being a genius...........try this he's fucking conniving self condensing asshole and has no business being a HUD offical like you...............

I really do not like assholes bilking the taxpayers, like this asshole did when he spent over 40,000 on a dining set and dishwasher and guess what he also BROKE the LAW.....................and by the way we liberals /democrat/ progressive, Americans don't have double standard, nice try...................

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un agree on their assessment of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Sunday, aligning the American president with an authoritarian foreign leader over a former U.S. vice president.

North Korea’s state-run news agency issued a biting attack last week on Biden, who has been critical of the communist state.

“I think they agree in their assessment of former Vice President Joe Biden,” Sanders said of Trump and Kim during an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press.” She was speaking from Japan during a state visit by Trump.

“The president doesn’t need somebody else to give him an assessment of Joe Biden. He’s given his own assessment a number of times.”

Europe's voters elect new parliament as nationalism mounts

Source: Associated Press

By MIKE CORDER 56 minutes ago

BRUSSELS (AP) -- Across Europe, anti-EU populists and proponents of closer unity made a final push for support Sunday as 21 nations went to the polls in a continent-wide battle for influence at the European Parliament.

Right-wing nationalists who want to slash immigration into Europe and return power to national governments are expected to make gains, though mainstream parties are tipped to hold onto power in the 751-seat legislature that sits in both Brussels and Strasbourg.

The election began on Thursday, but most of the EU's 28 member states, including the biggest of all, Germany and France, are voting on Sunday, and the results are expected overnight. Some 426 million people are eligible to vote.

"I don't want to see a right-populist Europe (that) wants to destroy the idea of togetherness," said Manfred Weber, the lead candidate of the Christian Democrat center-right EPP group, currently the biggest in the legislature.

How Tommy Fisher Used Fox News To Wangle Big 'Border Wall' Contracts

Matt Gertz May 25, 2019

Fox News has unprecedented influence over President Donald Trump’s decision-making. Trump’s worldview is shaped by the hours of propagandistic and sycophantic programming he often watches in a day, as well as his private consultations with many of the network’s stars on a wide variety of topics. As a result, Fox’s commentators have at times dictated the president’s policy agenda and political strategy, harnessed the news cycle by directing his attention to their particular obsessions, provided staffers for his administration, and hand-picked the recipients of his pardons.

And now, the network is emerging as a platform that can determine who could receive hefty federal contracts.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Trump has “alarmed” military commanders and Department of Homeland Security officials by aggressively lobbying them to grant a border wall contract to Fisher Industries, a North Dakota-based construction company whose CEO, Tommy Fisher, has regularly appeared on Fox and other conservative outlets to promote his company’s bid.

Fisher claims that his company can build a border wall both faster and cheaper than his competitors thanks to a patent-pending installation system, but the Army Corps of Engineers determined that Fisher’s design “did not meet its requirements and lacked regulatory approvals” and that the firm’s previous work on a barrier project “came in late and over budget,” the Post reported. Rejected through the procurement process, Fisher is trying to go around it through the right-wing media, a method that has allowed him to reach the president. Trump is now trying to sidestep the contracting process because, as Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) explained to the Post, he “had seen [Fisher] on television” — specifically on Fox — “advocating for his version of the barrier.”
