Cory Gardner, who said he 'will not support someone who brags about degrading and assaulting women,' changed his mind. He'll support Trump in 2020.
Back in 2016, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) said he absolutely could not vote for Trump, based on principle. On Wednesday, Gardner cast those claims aside.
In an interview with the Independent Journal Review, Gardner said he would “be supporting the president” in 2020.
That’s much different than Gardner’s position just two years ago, when he said he “cannot and will not support someone who brags about degrading and assaulting women.”
Gardner distanced himself from Trump in 2016, after a video surfaced of Trump bragging about serially assaulting women. In the video, Trump claimed he enjoyed grabbing women “by the pussy,” and kissing women without their consent because, as a star, he “can do anything.”

“Senator Gardner is letting everyone know why he won’t be re-elected in 2020: he’s standing with President Trump and against Colorado,” DSCC spokesperson David Bergstein said in a statement. “We hope he’s proud of his endorsement because he’s going to spend the next two years explaining it.”
Thumbing his nose at his own principles and the will of Coloradans, Cory Gardner is embracing Trump. If GOP insiders were worried about Gardner’s re-election chances before — and they were — they must be terrified now.

Trump Claims Warren Not As Popular As Expected: She Fell Into 'The Pocahontas Trap'

President Trump took another tired dig at Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who has launched a presidential bid against Trump in 2020, by, yet again, poking fun at her heritage.
During an interview with The Daily Caller, Trump was asked who his “dream” candidate to run against in 2020 might be. Trump mocked Warren for not being as popular as “they” expected, suggesting she fell into a some sort of “trap”: “The Pocahontas trap.”
“Well so far a lot of them. I don’t mind. I think that there’s a lot of talk about — it looks like Elizabeth Warren has not caught on like they thought she would. She fell into a trap. It’s called the Pocahontas trap,” he said. “There’s so many of them. The truth is there are some I’d love to run against.”
Trump has mocked Warren countless times for her claims of having traces of Native American heritage with his “Pocahontas” digs. Warren released the results of DNA test last year showing she has a small amount of Native American heritage, the optics of which were criticized by Republicans and Democrats alike.

GOP-Aligned Wisconsin Supreme Court Candidate Likened Gay Sex To Bestiality

The Republican-backed candidate in the April Wisconsin Supreme Court election has previously written that the Supreme Court striking down anti-sodomy laws was akin to legalizing bestiality, Planned Parenthood is a “wicked organization” devoted to “killing babies,” and the NAACP is a “disgrace to America.”
Those were among the writings on nominee Brian Hagedorn’s blog “Anno Domini” dug up by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for an investigation published Thursday.
Hagedorn, a former legal counsel to recently ousted Gov. Scott Walker (R), is running against the liberal-aligned appeals court judge Lisa Neubauer in a closely-watched campaign that Wisconsin Democrats see as key to flipping the court’s majority in their favor. While state Supreme Court elections are technically non-partisan, they’ve transformed into expensive proxy partisan battles in recent years.
“This race is about everything—it’s about redistricting, it’s about having a balance in our state,” local Democratic operative Patrick Guarasci told TPM in a recent interview.

Feds Have 'Terabytes' Of Evidence That 'Span Several Years' In Stone Case

Prosecutors possess an enormous trove of data and documents obtained during the criminal investigation of Roger Stone, according to a court document filed in the case Thursday.
The government has “multiple hard drives containing several terabytes of information” relevant to the case, which includes “bank and financial records and the contents of numerous physical devices.”
The FBI conducted simultaneous predawn raids of Stone’s Florida home, office, and Manhattan apartment on Jan. 25, arresting the longtime GOP operative and seizing “physical devices.”
The filing – made by prosecutors to designate the case “complex” to delay the trial date and provide more time for the discovery process – also states that the discovery materials include “search warrant applications and results” like “Apple iCloud accounts and email accounts.”

President Donald Trump changed his messaging about a proposed barrier along the U.S. Mexico border Thursday, telling Congress to refer to it as a “wall” and to “stop playing political games.”
“Lets [sic] just call them WALLS from now on and stop playing political games,” he tweeted. “A WALL is a WALL.”
Recently, Trump referred to the wall as a “barrier,” claiming he never said he would build a “wall” made of concrete. But in December he said that “some areas will be all concrete” while others would be “see-through.”
Earlier in January, Trump said at a press briefing that “steel is stronger than concrete” and that he would use it to construct fencing along the border. He blamed Democrats for changing the terminology.

Mississippi proposes 'license to harass' for transphobic teachers

Mississippi lawmakers have proposed new legislation that would ensure teachers cannot be disciplined if they refuse to respect a transgender student’s gender identity. This “license to harass” is the first bill of its kind in the country.
HB 1176 would update state law determining how school employees may be disciplined, adding specific language prohibiting their dismissal or suspension “for referring to any individual student’s immutable biological sex as objectively determined by anatomy and genetics at time of birth.”
School employees would be barred from being disciplined “despite the student’s preference to identify as the opposite gender after undergoing stages of transition as a pansexual, transsexual or transgender, whether through sex reassignment, gender identity transitioning, hormonal therapy treatment or other philosophical processes.”
The proposed measure also clarifies that schools cannot force an employee to comply with a directive to respect a student’s identity if it violates that employee’s “sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction.”

In the latest example of Russian officials rubbing elbows with members of the American right, a newly emerged photo shows Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson standing alongside a key employee of sanctioned Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev.
The photo dates to June 2014, and appears to be from Carson’s appearance as a keynote speaker at the 2014 gala for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), one of the most notorious anti-LGBTQ organizations extant.
Alexey Komov — shown in the photo to the right of Carson — has worked for years to ingratiate himself with the American far right, from partnering with American homeschool organizations to working with Christian fundamentalist groups to even liaising closely with Christian movie reviewers.
Carson, who ran in the 2016 GOP presidential primary, was working in the private sector at the time, and there’s no indication he broke any laws. Neither Carson’s office nor Komov responded to ThinkProgress’ requests for comment.

Other Russians have cozied up to Republicans at the same time the Kremlin was meddling in America’s political processes. Russian foreign agent Maria Butina managed to infiltrate the National Rifle Association (NRA) and meet with numerous members of 2016 GOP presidential candidates like former governors Scott Walker (R-WI) and Bobby Jindal (R-LA), as well as directly question President Donald Trump during his campaign.
“There’s nothing surprising about seeing a picture of [Carson and Komov] together,” said scholar Chris Stroop, an expert on links between between Russia and the American religious right who received a doctorate from Stanford in Russian history. “Carson is precisely the type of radical right-wing Christian with which Komov is frequently able to cultivate comfortable relationships.”

LONDON/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Ireland accused British Prime Minister Theresa May of wishful thinking on Wednesday for seeking to renegotiate a post-Brexit arrangement for the Irish border in an attempt to get backing for Britain’s EU divorce deal in parliament.
Other European Union leaders had quickly dismissed the idea of reopening the deal, saying the Irish “backstop” was not negotiable, shortly after parliament instructed May to do just that in a vote on Tuesday.
Less than two months before the United Kingdom is due by law to leave the EU on March 29, investors and allies are trying to gauge where the crisis will end up, with options including a disorderly ‘no-deal’ Brexit, a delay, or no Brexit at all.
Two weeks after overwhelmingly rejecting the deal May had agreed in Brussels in two years of talks, a 317-310 majority in parliament demanded she secure a replacement for the backstop, an insurance policy that aims to prevent a hard border being erected between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

U.S. senator asks J&J for documents on talc, baby powder safety

(Reuters) - U.S. Democratic Senator Patty Murray sent a letter to Johnson & Johnson on Tuesday seeking information related to allegations in a Reuters Special Report that the healthcare company knew about the presence of asbestos in its talc-based baby powder.
The letter addressed to J&J Chief Executive Alex Gorsky asks for documents and information related to testing of its talc products for the presence of carcinogens and “how it presented that information to regulators and consumers.”
Reuters on Dec. 14 published a Special Report detailing that the company knew that the talc in its raw and finished powders sometimes tested positive for cancer-causing asbestos from the 1970s into the early 2000s - test results the company did not disclose to regulators or consumers.
While exposure to asbestos has been linked to mesothelioma, J&J has repeatedly said that its talc products are safe, and that decades of studies have shown them to be asbestos-free and that they do not cause cancer.

Democrats seek to cut U.S. budget deficits in half: Yarmuth

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee on Tuesday said he and other senior Democrats aim to write a fiscal blueprint this year that would cut annual budget deficits by 50 percent in the next 10 years, possibly including tax hikes on corporations and the wealthy.
Representative John Yarmuth, in an interview with Reuters, said part of the effort could focus on raising the U.S. corporate tax rate to 26 percent or 27 percent, up from the 21 percent enacted through a broad Republican tax cut law in 2017.
Even with added tax revenues, Yarmuth conceded the difficult path toward deficit-reduction.
Annual federal budget deficits are hurtling toward $1 trillion and Yarmuth said it is “not going to be easy to cut them by half a trillion dollars” by around 2029, especially given looming economic cross-currents.
