NY Times reporter asks editor if its columnists are misrepresenting facts

"Equivocal bulls**t": Editor who hired climate denier offers weak defense to staff.
JOE ROMM
FEB 28, 2018, 3:48 PM

New York Times opinion page editor James Bennet has been widely criticized for a series of hires, including columnist Bret Stephens, a longtime climate science denier.

On Tuesday, Columbia Journalism Review wrote about “a crisis in confidence within the newsroom” as a result of Bennet’s miscues. The decision by Bennet and the Times to hire Stephens and then run his opinions apparently without fact checking has received widespread criticism, including from ThinkProgress.

But until now, there has never really been a full explanation of why Bennet kept hiring such controversial columnists. This changed on Tuesday, when HuffPost published the leaked transcript of a meeting Bennet had with Times employees back in December, which was recorded and shared with HuffPost.

As a person who attended the meeting, and is quoted by HuffPost, said, Bennet’s answers are “equivocal bullshit.” I agree. Bennet gives no defensible explanation of why opinion columnists should not be held to the same standards of accuracy as reporters. And he simply has no answer to the question of how he knows columnists “aren’t misrepresenting facts.”

During gun violence meeting, Trump indicates confusion about how mass shootings obtain AR-15s

At the end of a bipartisan meeting about gun violence that lasted more than an hour on Wednesday, Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) asked President Trump the key question: “What do we do about weapons of war easily accessible on our streets?”

Trump responded by falsely claiming that the guns Feinstein referred to are “black market,” seemingly unaware that the AR-15 used to take 17 lives the Parkland school shooting earlier this month was purchased legally.

“You have weapons on the street — that’s what we’re talking about with black market,” Trump told Feinstein. “These are black market weapons and you know, the problem Diane is that these aren’t where you walk into the store and buy them, these are where somebody hands you a gun and you hand them some money.”

Most of the time if you have any smarts before you have meeting, that "you call" you research the topic..............this asshole has no clue, but he could and did say that he could point a gun on fifth avenue and shoot someone and no one would not care....................

It is absolutely amazing on just how stupid he really is, and his litmus test on facts in holding a meeting is when he gets caught and has no fucking clue on what he says, when he gets caught in his stupidity he crosses his arms and looks like deer eyes in headlights and then says this is what "you" have to discuss............no asshole.....................you called the meeting, and if you have no clue which you have no clue, resign

He really is stupid and very dangerous, his photo-op fails again ....................

When he gets challenged with facts he crosses his arms and tries to deflect his narcissistic malignant stupidity of total ignorance of what he is suppose to do at a meeting that he called.................he could not do or did not take the time to research the issue.........................

Congress Struggles To Break Familiar Pattern Of Inaction On Gun Violence

Once again, following yet another mass shooting, members of Congress are meeting with survivors and introducing a flurry of bills aimed at combating gun violence. But while some lawmakers insist that it’s a “new day” on Capitol Hill, citing the activism of the Stoneman Douglass High School students that has galvanized the country, others predict that this push will end like those after gun massacres in Sandy Hook, Las Vegas, and the Pulse nightclub—with inaction.

Even as Delta Airlines and a host of other major corporations distance themselves from the NRA, and Dick’s Sporting Goods moves to end sales of assault rifles in their stores nationwide, some lawmakers are hesitant to take action and others cannot agree on a path forward.

Complicating Congress’ already entrenched resistance to gun control legislation is a mercurial President, who one days calls for standing up to the NRA and the next walks back his support for gun control bills, and a familiar struggle between Democrats and Republicans about how to begin the debate. Meanwhile, several Republican lawmakers remain staunchly opposed to even the most modest policy changes.

Arctic warming: scientists alarmed by 'crazy' temperature rises

An alarming heatwave in the sunless winter Arctic is causing blizzards in Europe and forcing scientists to reconsider even their most pessimistic forecasts of climate change.

Although it could yet prove to be a freak event, the primary concern is that global warming is eroding the polar vortex, the powerful winds that once insulated the frozen north.

The north pole gets no sunlight until March, but an influx of warm air has pushed temperatures in Siberia up by as much as 35C above historical averages this month. Greenland has already experienced 61 hours above freezing in 2018 - more than three times as many hours as in any previous year.

Seasoned observers have described what is happening as “crazy,” “weird,” and “simply shocking”.

Federal Watchdog Identifies New Workplace Safety Problems at Los Alamos Lab

This article was produced in partnership with The Santa Fe New Mexican, which is a member of the ProPublica Local Reporting Network.

Los Alamos National Laboratory has failed to keep track of a toxic metal used in nuclear weapons production, potentially exposing workers to serious health consequences, a federal watchdog has found.

The New Mexico lab’s failure to adequately track beryllium — small amounts of which can cause lung disease and cancer — violates federal regulations put in place to prevent worker overexposure, according to a report last week from the Department of Energy’s inspector general.

The report is the latest example of serious workplace safety violations that have occurred at Los Alamos — which gave birth to the atomic bomb during World War II — including radioactive contamination and other injuries to workers.

In October, for example, an independent federal safety board said the lab was ill equipped to respond to emergencies and found recurring flaws in emergency preparedness dating back to 2011. Soon after, the Department of Energy launched an investigation following a “near-miss” incident in which a worker responded to an alarm and entered an oxygen-deprived room, which could have resulted in asphyxiation.

Kelly and Kushner stuck at an impasse after Trump's punt on clearance

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump’s decision to punt the issue of whether Jared Kushner can keep his access to sensitive government secrets without a full security clearance to his chief of staff, John Kelly, has put him in a tricky position, stuck between the rules on one side and the president’s family on the other.

Trump's ad hoc decision not to intervene in the clearance process on behalf of his son-in-law and senior adviser in effect left Kelly and Kushner in limbo, prolonging an uncomfortable situation that White House aides say is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon.

Kelly does not plan to recommend to the president that he grant Kushner a waiver, but he is unlikely to resign if Trump ultimately decides to do so, according to a person familiar with his thinking.

-snip-

“If it starts preventing him from doing what he wants to do, he’ll figure out a workaround,” a senior administration official said of Kushner’s security clearance troubles. “All of this stuff is basically just cosmetic talk.”

Report: D.O.T. stalling transportation regulations under Trump

Source: Axios

The Department of Transportation under President Trump has decided to indefinitely delay or withdraw at least 12 regulations designed to increase safety, per an AP report. The moves come as the Trump administration decided to make a significant push toward deregulation — with Trump often touting those cuts as one of the primary examples of his first year in office.

Why it matters: The stalled regulations are often to the benefit of transportation industries — as they don't have to enact costly safety additions — and the AP's report highlights political appointees in Trump's DOT with strong industry backgrounds.

The Trump administration's take: "DOT says having industry insiders in leadership positions provides deep practical experience in how the transportation industry works."
