Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) on Tuesday lashed out at the media over the coverage of her decision to support the Republican tax bill, charging that the press has been “unbelievable sexist” while covering her negotiations with GOP leaders.
“I cannot believe that the press would have treated another senator with 20 years of experience as they have treated me,” Collins told reporters on Tuesday, according to Bloomberg News.
“They’ve ignored everything that I’ve gotten and written story after story about how I’m duped,” she added, per Politico. “How am I duped when all your amendments get accepted?”
She also said that a reporter, who she did not name, noted that she did not cry in a piece about the tax bill, according to Politico. Politico identified the report as a piece in the New York Times about a meeting Collins had with a group opposed to the tax plan. The Times later removed that reference, per Politico.

On Tuesday afternoon, the House passed the final version of the GOP’s tax bill, and the Senate is expected to pass the bill later Tuesday night. The plan will upend the American economic system, raise taxes on middle class people making between $40,000 and $50,000 a year by more than $5 billion, cut taxes by more than $5.5 billion for people making more than $1 million a year, punish wage-earning employees, repeal the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, likely force billions of dollars in cuts to safety net programs, and kill — conservatively — 10,000 people every year.
President Trump aims to sign the legislation into law as soon as possible.
The bill that will end up on his desk is propped up by lies: Republicans promised the tax cuts would pay for themselves, but even the friendliest analyses tell a different story. They promised they would simplify the tax code, but they ultimately only further complicated the process. They promised they would cut taxes on the middle class, but they’ve done the opposite.

Alabama is first state to freeze enrollment to Childrens Health Insurance Program
Alabama is the latest state to bear bad news to recipients of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), warning families Monday that it will no longer enroll children starting Jan. 1, 2018 and will terminate the program entirely on Feb. 1, 2018 if Congress fails to act.
Congressional lawmakers have yet to renew federal funding for CHIP since the program expired on Sept. 30. Since then, state officials have had to relay devastating news of funding shortages to families of modest incomes right around the holidays.
CHIP provides low-cost health coverage to nearly nine million children nationwide, and provides insurance to roughly 150,000 Alabama children, 84,000 of which are at risk of losing coverage through the state’s CHIP, dubbed ALL Kids. (In 20 states, CHIP also covers pregnant women.) The state-administered program is jointly financed, and federal money accounts for more of the share — between 65 to 85 percent.

From catastrophic hurricanes to an endless wildfire season, Americans endured huge personal and financial losses from natural disasters in 2017. Now, people who live in disaster-prone areas should be preparing for more turbulence, this time in the form of tax legislation that will make their ability to recover from future disaster even more difficult.
As they prepare to vote on the final tax bill, Senate Republicans are expected to follow their House colleagues who on Tuesday passed a sweeping tax bill containing a provision that will harm the ability of residents to put their lives back together after a disaster.
Disaster victims currently can deduct losses that are not insured and that amount to more than 10 percent of their incomes. Under the new tax plan, deductions for personal loss from natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires would be eliminated unless the event is a federally-declared disaster.

The House of Representatives is set to vote on the final version of the GOP tax bill Tuesday, with the Senate to follow close behind. Most Republican members of Congress are heralding the plan’s giant, permanent tax cut for corporations as the reason behind their support. The GOP argues that when corporations get a tax cut, they put that money toward creating more jobs and raising wages.
But history shows that just isn’t correct — and history may be about to repeat itself.
In an interview with CNN Money, Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan made it clear what he plans to do with the corporation’s tax windfall — and it doesn’t benefit the average American worker.
“Is it our goal to increase return to our shareholders and do we have an excess amount of capital? The answer to both is, yes,” Sloan told CNN Money. “So our expectation should be that we will continue to increase our dividend and our share buybacks next year and the year after that and the year after that.”

After being widely criticized for mocking members of a student group that wanted nothing more but to meet with her, Minnesota Rep. Mary Franson (R) responded with a private Facebook post suggesting she was worried about becoming the next Roy Moore.
“A man’s life was destroyed in AL,” Franson wrote, alluding to Moore. “40 years ago he met with minors alone and they recently accused him of horrendous actions. In the world of we must believe every sexual harassment claim, I would think my approach is beyond reasonable. All it takes is one perceived action and my life is destroyed. The life of my family is destroyed. That is a risk I will not take.”
