Paul Manafort and the privilege of being a white collar defendant

When former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort walked into the Washington, D.C. field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) early Monday morning to turn himself in, many waited in anticipation to see embarrassing photographs of Manafort in handcuffs, often called a “perp walk.”

But when the videos surfaced, Manafort was cuff-free.

Both Manafort and Rick Gates, a former Manafort business associate and Trump campaign aide who was also indicted on Monday, didn’t have to see images of themselves in handcuffs plastered all over the media; rather, the two were able to portray themselves as calm, cool and collected.

This is a privilege awarded to white collar criminals who allegedly commit serious crimes, yet are spared from the embarrassment other criminals face. The former Trump campaign officials were likely given that treatment by special counsel Robert Mueller, who issued the indictments against both Manafort and Gates.

I think he and this Gates accomplice should have had cuffs on and doing the frog walk

Could Wilbur Ross Be The Next Trump Official Targeted In The Mueller Probe?

Reprinted with permission from AlterNet.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment against international lobbyist and Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort, and pleading by Trump campaign foreign policy aide George Papadopoulos, cast long shadows over other top Trump administration officials, starting with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, whose previous financial deals involved the European money-laundering hub of Cyprus.

The banking sector of that small island nation in the Mediterranean appears to be a crossroads where top Trump campaign associates, such as Manafort and Papadopoulos, and senior administration officials like Commerce Secretary Ross, crossed paths and had layered financial and political dealings with Kremlin-tied Russian oligarchs.

The Manafort indictment, apart from its detailing of how he spent millions of untaxed overseas earnings for luxury properties in the U.S. that the government wants to seize, listed more than half a dozen pages of overseas wire transfersadding up to $12 million. Almost all of them originated in Cyprus.

Calling Wilbur Ross, Calling Wilbur Ross....................I think you need to do some explaining, after all you were at this organization

and all the dots go back to this Bank of Cyprus, all of it

Speaker Paul Ryan says Manafort, Gates indictment won't derail GOP agenda

House Speaker Paul Ryan says the indictment of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and aide Rick Gates won't derail the Republican tax overhaul and the rest of the GOP agenda.

"I really don't have anything to add other than nothing is going to derail what we're doing in Congress, because we're working on solving people's problems," Ryan said Monday in an interview with conservative radio talk show host Jerry Bader.

Manafort oversaw Donald Trump’s presidential campaign from late May until August 2016, when he was fired following concerns about his past lobbying work for pro-Russian Ukrainian businessmen. Many of the charges he faces in the indictment unsealed Monday relate to his activities before he joined the Trump campaign.

Monday's indictment marks the first criminal charges in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the campaign’s links to Russia.

After commenting briefly on the issue during his radio interview, the Janesville Republican quickly shifted to focus on his tax overhaul effort.

Ryan was asked about the indictment again Monday during a stop at Royal Basket Trucks in Darien.

Ron Johnson stands by call for special counsel Robert Mueller to resign

Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson stood by his declaration that Robert S. Mueller III should resign, even as the first indictments were handed down Monday in the probe into Russian interference in the presidential election led by the special counsel.

Ben Voelkel, a Johnson spokesman, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "Day to day developments don’t change the senator’s view that a special counsel was appointed far too early in this process."

"Nor do they affect his overall concern that this investigation cannot tolerate even the appearance of a conflict of interest. Mr. Mueller is simply too close to James Comey and the FBI as questions continue to surface about their roles in matters the special counsel is investigating," Voelkel said.

Hail to the chief: cyclist gives Trump the middle finger

The president of the United States is used to being saluted, but a cyclist in Virginia put her own particular slant on the tradition on Saturday when she was overtaken by Donald Trump’s motorcade.

The woman on her bike was photographed raising her middle finger when Trump’s cavalcade passed her on its way out from the Trump National Golf Club on the banks of the Potomac river, on the outskirts of Washington DC. She then repeated the gesture when she caught up with the motorcade.

The White House pool report noted drily: “POTUS’s motorcade departed the Trump National Golf Club at 3.12pm, passing two pedestrians, one of whom gave a thumbs-down sign. Then it overtook a female cyclist, wearing a white top and cycling helmet, who responded by giving the middle finger.

Michigan State students pressure school to divest from Robert Mercers hedge fund

DANIELLE MCLEAN OCT 26, 2017, 5:13 PM

Student and activist groups are calling on Michigan State University to stop investing $50 million of its endowment with right-wing billionaire Robert Mercer’s secretive hedge fund.

The push for the university to divest began after ThinkProgress revealed last week that Michigan State was among 12 wealthy institutions invested in Renaissance Technologies, the East Setauket, NY-based hedge fund whose co-CEO Mercer has been accused of having racist views and finances Breitbart, a website that traffics in white nationalism.

In response to the article, the student group Michigan State College Democrats started a Change.org. petition calling on the university’s Chief Investment Officer Philip Zecher to divest. As of Thursday afternoon, the petition has over 1,200 signatures.

“A lot of people have been pointing out that it’s the university’s job to make money and we appreciate that. But we think change can be made when enough businesses divest,” Eli Pales, a junior-year student and press secretary of the Michigan State College Democrats, told ThinkProgress. “When enough entities pull out of their fund, it will no longer be profitable for Renaissance Technologies to keep Robert Mercer in his position.”

This is from 3 days ago, but I feel that this important, to give support to the students and alumni, enough of the Mercers, making billions to generate right wing hate

Betsy DeVos may give only partial relief to students defrauded by for-profit colleges

Source: The Guardian

The US education department is understood to be considering only partially forgiving federal loans for students defrauded by for-profit colleges.

Tens of thousands of students deceived by now-defunct for-profit schools had more than $550m in such loans canceled completely under Barack Obama.

According to department officials who were not authorized to publicly comment on the issue, Donald Trump’s education secretary, Betsy DeVos, is working on a plan that could grant such students just partial relief.

If DeVos goes ahead, the change could hit many students who expected full loan forgiveness. It is not immediately clear how many students might be affected.

A department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday. But the Trump team has given hints of a new approach.

In August, the department extended its contract with a staffing agency to speed up the processing of a backlog of loan forgiveness claims. In the procurement notice, the department said: “Policy changes may necessitate certain claims already processed be revisited to assess other attributes.” The department would not further clarify the meaning of that notice.

NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW MUELLER FIRING RAPID RESPONSE

Donald Trump is publicly considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller, the person leading the Department of Justice investigation of possible illegal actions by Donald Trump and members of his presidential campaign, and the efforts to conceal those activities.

This would be a constitutional crisis for our country. It would demand an immediate and unequivocal response to show that we will not tolerate abuse of power from Donald Trump.

Our response in the minutes and hours following a power grab will dictate what happens next, and whether Congress—the only body with the constitutional power and obligation to rein Trump in from his rampage—will do anything to stand up to him.

That's why we're preparing to hold emergency "Nobody is Above the Law" rallies around the country in the event they are needed.

Use the map or search below by ZIP code to find an event near you, or create one if none exists.

Rallies will begin hours after news breaks of a Mueller firing:

If Mueller is fired BEFORE 2 P.M. local time —> events will begin @ 5 P.M. local time
If Mueller is fired AFTER 2 P.M. local time —> events will begin @ noon local time the following day
This is the general plan—please confirm details on your event page, as individual hosts may tailor their events to their local plan.
This is our moment to stand up to protect our democracy. Let's mobilize to show that we won't let Donald Trump become the authoritarian that he aspires to be. The law applies to all of us, and it's essential that it also applies to the most powerful people in our country.

Use the search tool to find an event near you, or create one if none exists.
