AT&T CEO: Failure to pass tax reform would be 'bad indictment' for GOP

Source: The Hill

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said Wednesday that if Republicans cant enact tax reform while controlling both chambers of Congress and the White House it would be a "bad indictment" of their effectiveness.

I absolutely believe, and I think youre beginning to understand, that the people in the Senate and Congress believe that if they dont get tax reform done, it may be political survival for them, Stephenson said at an event hosted by the Business Roundtable.

Stephenson added that if youre a Republican, you better have it done before the primary season begins.

Stephenson was one of several business leaders who pressed for tax reform at the event Wednesday. Several of the CEOs said that taxes should be a bipartisan issue and that both sides of the aisle see a need to overhaul the code.

New study busts conservative narrative of skyrocketing health premiums

When health care is talked about on the national stage, it’s largely been centered on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) individual and small group marketplace, which roughly affects 7 percent of United States residents. But what is the state of insurance for people who have employer-based health insurance?

Annual premiums for more than 150 million U.S. residents who get health insurance through their jobs increased 3 percent, on average. Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) and the Health Research & Educational Trust are reporting moderate premium increases; this is juxtaposed against the ongoing narrative that premiums elsewhere are skyrocketing. ACA enrollees will likely see big premiums increases for 2018 plans, but most will be safeguarded by federal subsidies.

“Most people think they are affected by premium increases in the [ACA] marketplace,” KFF’s President and Chief Executive Officer Drew Altman said in a conference call with reporters. This is not the case.

Equifax shows Republicans must end attacks on financial regulation

Source: The Hill

It’s time for the Senate Republicans working to roll back a vital consumer safeguard just issued by the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to say “uncle.” After Equifax, the accumulated weight of evidence is just too much, no matter how much congressional opponents of the CFPB may want to please their political financiers.

In July, the CFPB issued a rule prohibiting rip-off clauses — perhaps the single most important tool that big banks and financial companies have used to escape accountability for cheating, conning, fleecing, defrauding and plundering consumers — in the fine print of consumer financial contracts. The common-sense CFPB rule would ban contract terms that prohibit consumers from joining together to hold banks and other financial companies accountable for wrongdoing through class-action lawsuits.

Republicans in Washington aim to overturn the rule using an obscure tool known as the Congressional Review Act (CRA). Shortly after the CFPB finalized its rule, the House of Representatives voted to reverse the agency’s action, and the Senate has until early November to take action. Under the terms of the CRA, opponents of the rule need only garner a majority of votes.

GOP senators are rushing to pass Graham-Cassidy. We asked 9 to explain what it does.

Source: Vox

Republican senators are struggling to articulate why they are rushing to pass their last-ditch effort to repeal and replace Obamacare over the next 10 days before running into their September 30 deadline.

In interviews with Vox on Tuesday, nine Republican senators primarily argued that their “Hail Mary” bill — spearheaded by Sens. Lindsey Graham (SC) and Bill Cassidy (LA) — would return federal power to the states, giving them greater flexibility to improve their health systems locally. “The heart of the legislation takes the policymaking role of Washington and sends it to the states,” Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said.

Far less clear is exactly how Graham-Cassidy would pull off this feat without resulting in millions of Americans losing their insurance — and the number of millions is still unknown, since any vote would likely have to come before the Congressional Budget Office completes its analysis of the bill. The GOP senators insisted that the tens of billions in cuts to federal health spending proposed in the bill would not result in coverage losses because, they said, the states would have more flexibility.

“They can do it with less money,” said Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), who was unable to explain how or why.

“You have to have a car to get into, and this is the only car there is,” one said of the Obamacare repeal push,” Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) said."

Just think the above comments are from an ass**** that will keep his or her current health care being paid by the taxpayers, while they try to pass a law to give everyone sh*t, and this "guy" gets over $174,000 a year saying and I quote:

“You have to have a car to get into, and this is the only car there is,” one said of the Obamacare repeal push,” Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) said."

Never mind about fixing the issues with the ACA, never mind that "Medicare for all is cheaper". And the only thing right wing republicans want to do is confuse the public>

Never mind that Toyota moved its operation to Canada, because the health care system is cheaper and simpler for the company per employee value, when compared to this mess with the for "profit" sh*t system " here in the United States.

Call these nine senators and ask them about the Toyota plant moving to Canada, and why they moved and see what you get.

They make over $174,000 trying to kill human beings

Moore Reportedly Claimed Endorsement From Deceased Conservative Activist

By MATT SHUHAM Published SEPTEMBER 19, 2017 5:25 PM

Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore reportedly listed the deceased conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly under his “endorsements” webpage until Monday, despite the fact that the Eagle Forum founder died more than a year ago.

Schlafly disappeared from Moore’s website after RollCall asked to see a press release announcing her endorsement, the outlet reported Tuesday. Schlafly’s name had been listed next to the text: “Late President, Eagle Forum; inference of Ed Martin.”

According to the report, after RollCall first asked for the press release, Moore’s campaign initially said there wasn’t one, and instead provided a link to a statement Martin, Eagle Forum’s current president, gave Breitbart News regarding his own endorsement.

Martin told Breitbart about a speech he and Schlafly had seen Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, give to the group.

Hey Alabama, just think, if this psychopath gets into office, he will send your kids into war, gut your social safety nets further, and then sit in his big leather chair and have a seance with one dead person for guidance who also hated people if they thought for themselves, and that everyone is a heathen and should be punished for not following his or her definition of "god"..................think about it.

GOP State Lawmaker Shares Meme Encouraging Cars To Hit Protesters

Source: Talking Points Memo

By NICOLE LAFOND Published SEPTEMBER 20, 2017 7:48 AM

A Republican state legislator in South Dakota apologized Tuesday after sharing a meme on Facebook that appeared to encourage people to hit protestors with vehicles.

Under the headline All Lives Splatter, the cartoon showed a car apparently hitting people in the street and said nobody cares about your protest and keep your ass out of the road.

Her caption above the image said I think this is a movement we can all support, according to local newspaper, the Argus Leader.

After local progressive groups shared the image and asked for an apology from the lawmaker, Rep. Lynne DiSanto deleted the post and said she perceived it as encouraging people to stay out of the street.

Trump health secretary takes private flights costing tens of thousands: report

Source: The Hill

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tom Price reportedly broke with precedent when he used private jets last week for five different business flights.

The use of the private jets costs significantly more than flying commercially, Politico reported. According to the news outlet, his travels between Sept. 13 and 15 would likely cost at least $60,000.

Price used the private jets to get to places including Maine, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, where he took part in discussions and visited community health centers.

In the past, Obama administration secretaries flew commercial when they traveled around the U.S., Politico reported.
“As part of the HHS mission to enhance and protect the health and well-being of the American people, Secretary Price travels on occasion outside Washington to meet face to face with the American people to hear their thoughts and concerns firsthand,” an HHS spokesperson told Politico.

Poll: Nearly half of voters support single-payer healthcare

Source: The Hill

Nearly half of voters in a new survey support a "single-payer health care system."

A Politico/Morning Consult poll finds 49 percent of respondents support a single-payer healthcare system in which "Americans would get their health insurance from one government plan."

About one-third of voters, 35 percent, oppose the idea.

Another 17 percent don't have an opinion.
Among Democratic voters, two-thirds support the idea, compared to 18 percent who oppose it.

Aung San Suu Kyi says Myanmar does not fear scrutiny over Rohingya crisis

Aung San Suu Kyi has broken her silence on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, delivering a speech denounced as a “mix of untruths and victim-blaming” by Amnesty International.

In her first public address since a bloody military crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim minority that has been branded “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by the United Nations, the Nobel laureate did not criticise the army and said she did not “fear international scrutiny”.

“I’m aware of the fact that the world’s attention is focused on the situation in Rakhine state. As a responsible member of the community of nations Myanmar does not fear international scrutiny,” she said.

“There have been allegations and counter-allegations … We have to make sure those allegations are based on solid evidence before we take action,” she said in her speech from the capital, Naypyidaw.

Taking Charter Schools Private With Public Funds

Reprinted with permission from ProPublica.

This story was co-published with Slate.

This past June, Florida’s top education agency delivered a failing grade to the Orange Park Performing Arts Academy in suburban Jacksonville for the second year in a row. It designated the charter school for kindergarten through fifth grade as the worst public school in Clay County, and one of the lowest performing in the state.

Two-thirds of the academy’s students failed the state exams last year, and only a third of them were making any academic progress at all. The school had had four principals in three years, and teacher turnover was high, too.

“My fourth grader was learning stuff that my second grader was learning — it shouldn’t be that way,” said Tanya Bullard, who moved her three daughters from the arts academy this past summer to a traditional public school. “The school has completely failed me and my children.”

The district terminated the academy’s charter contract. Surprisingly, Orange Park didn’t shut down — and even found a way to stay on the public dime. It reopened last month as a private school charging $5,000 a year, below the $5,886 maximum that low-income students receive to attend the school of their choice under a state voucher program. Academy officials expect all of its students to pay tuition with the publicly backed coupons.

There is NO accountability for this stuff----------------no wonder this country is 18th in the world and falling further down the line in ranking. I remember when we were number 1 and the lowest we went down in my generation was 4th...........now

And with this Devos POS getting a pass from the McConnell team, just pisses me off more when I see articles like this.
