House Republicans are gearing up for a closed-door interview with Department of Justice (DOJ) official Bruce Ohr, which is slated to take place later this month.
Ohr, who served as the department’s associate deputy attorney general and now currently works in the criminal division, is the latest target among House conservatives who claim there is ample evidence of bias against President Trump in the DOJ and FBI during the 2016 election.
The DOJ and the committee reached an agreement for Ohr to appear before the committee on Aug. 28, DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores confirmed.
This means Ohr will not be under subpoena power when he interviews with congressional investigators on the House Judiciary and House Oversight and Government Reform committees. The two panels are conducting a joint investigation into FBI and DOJ conduct during the 2016 election.

Federal judge dismisses Dems request for records on Trump's Washington hotel

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by a group of House Democrats seeking records on Donald Trump’s Washington, D.C. hotel.
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta wrote that the group of 17 Democrats seeking the large cache of documents on the Trump International Hotel in D.C. have no legal standing to bring the suit.
The report noted that the Obama-appointed judge wrote in his opinion that there is no legal precedent for the type of request the congressional Democrats were suing over.
Mehta added that “the House members had other options to settle disputes over documents, including a formal subpoena from a congressional committee or other institutional responses from Congress,” the Journal noted.
“The fact that a political remedy is hard to achieve does not automatically swing open the doors to the federal courts,” the Obama appointee wrote of the suit brought by Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
In their lawsuit, the report added, the Democrats cited the obscure “Seven Member Rule” — a 1928 law that “enables any seven members of the panel to request and receive documents from the federal government.”

Danish government hits back at Fox host Trish Regan after she portrays their country
as a socialist hellhole

Fox Business Network host Trish Regan last week did an entire segment trashing Denmark for allegedly being a socialist hellhole — and now Danish government officials are hitting back.
In particular, Regan tried to portray Denmark as an economically stagnant country whose top tax rate of 56 percent stifled incentives to work.
“There’s something rotten in Denmark!” Regan declared on her Fox Business program last Friday, quoting a famous line from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” “Those ‘freebies,’ well, they’re anything but free… everyone in Denmark is working for the government!”
As Bloomberg reports, Danish officials are now condemning Regan’s commentary as wholly inaccurate, while at the same time inviting her to come see their homeland for herself.

'Not what 9-1-1 was designed for': Devin Nunes slammed for 'calling the police'
on protesting constituents

Congressman Devin Nunes (R-CA) was publicly called out for misusing 9-1-1 by beckoning police to shield him from constituents in his central valley congressional district.
“Clovis police were called and the building housing Congressman Devin Nunes’ office was locked during a rally for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security on Tuesday,” the Fresno Bee reported.
Constituents were also protesting Rep. Nunes using his position as chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) to protect President Donald Trump from congressional scrutiny.
“Nunes is a puppet for Trump,” argued Gene Roza of the California Alliance for Retired Americans. “We pay for [his office], we should have access to it.”

Gun activist profiled by Fox News gets arrested for a hate crime after threatening a
black woman at gunpoint

A Vermont man whose gun activism got him a write-up by Fox News has been arrested for pointing a gun at a black woman while yelling racial slurs — an act that got him charged with a hate crime.
The Burlington Free Press reported that 23-year-old Sheldon Rheaume, a resident of Essex, VT, was jailed without bond early Tuesday morning after on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment and hate-motivated disorderly conduct.
Police said that around 3:30 AM on Tuesday, Rheaume went into a gas station and began directing racial slurs at the woman seated behind the counter. He allegedly told her she was “lazy” and “needed to get to work” before going outside and using more slurs against her while complaining to the woman’s coworker.
When the attendant exited the store, court papers claim, Rheaume took out a gun and said “I’ll handle you” to her. According to the Free Press report, the woman told police that the man waved the gun around in front of her face and pointed it at her as well.

Lost in all the controversy over President Vladimir Putin asking Donald Trump to turn over former U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul to Kremlin investigators for questioning — in return for access to Russian officials indicted by the Justice Department for meddling in the 2016 election — was the fact that Putin had a whole list of Americans he wanted to be turned over.
According to Michael Weiss, writing for the Daily Beast, far down Putin’s shopping list are three Department of Homeland Security agents whom he has accused of running off with over $400 million in Russian money – when in fact they were investigating associates of Putin laundering that money.
The agents — identified as Todd Hyman, Aleksandr Schwartzman, and Svetlana Angert — were included by Putin, who reportedly explained to Trump that some of that stolen money was funneled to the 2016 presidential campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“It might have been legal, the contribution itself, but the way the money was earned was illegal,” Putin offered at the Helsinki meeting.
As Weiss writes, “Hyman, Schwartzman, and Angert were not laundering money, as Putin and his prosecutor would suggest; they were investigating money launderers.”

Bobby Wilson, a Republican candidate for Arizona State Senate, drew controversy at a Moms Demand Action event last month when he cited, as an example of "good guys" with guns, the time he fatally shot his own mother.
Now, The Arizona Republic has discovered Wilson was involved in another violent incident in 2016 at their vacation community in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, during which he allegedly made a violent threat against the president of a condo association, Dan Dimovski:
According to Dimovski, and another board member who witnessed the incident, Wilson entered the room and started pointing at Dimovski and yelling for him to stay away from his wife.
"My jaw dropped," Dimovski said. "I saw that violent look. I'll never forget that ... His face was very, like, crazy. His eyes were like popped out."
"Knowing what I know now," Dimovski told The Republic, "I think it was a threat to kill me, especially the fact that he has exposed his position on what he thinks of weapons."

ICE agents set 'trap' for immigrants seeking legal residency

Two federal immigration agencies worked together in a coordinated effort to set deportation traps for unsuspecting immigrants seeking legal status, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) alleged in a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen this week.
According to the Boston Globe, the two agencies arranged meetings for the undocumented immigrants at government offices, where they were subsequently arrested, and in some cases deported.
According to e-mails obtained by the Globe between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and employees of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), ICE asked government officials to space out the meetings so that the public wouldn’t catch on and draw “negative media interests.”
“As far as scheduling goes, I would prefer not to do them all at one time as it is [not] only a strain on our ability to transport and process several arrests at once, but it also has the potential to be a trigger for negative media interests, as we have seen in the past,” Andrew Graham, an ICE officer, wrote to a USCIS employee in one email from October.

Hawaii's newest volcanic cone is over 100 feet tall. How will it be named?

The town of Volcano is swaying, back and forth.
“It’s been rocking and rolling,” Bobby Camara, a Volcano resident who spent decades working as a ranger at the nearby Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, said from his Big Island home.
Though the tremors are mild, they still cause the lamps in Camara’s house to gently swing.
“You feel like you’re drunk or on a boat — the quakes are quite subtle," Camara said.
For over three months, the southeastern portion of Hawaii has been quaking and gushing lava, though the vigorously erupting lava recently took a pause.
One of the more stark results of this activity — stoked by the movement of hot rock beneath the ground — has been the creation of a volcanic cone, appearing as a sort of blackened, miniature volcano.
Currently standing at some 100 feet tall, it grew upwards as lava fountained high into the air, and then fell in heaps back to the ground. Volcano scientists informally call it Fissure 8, and it’s known geologically as a “spatter cone.” But what might this new Hawaiian feature be named?
Many local Hawaiians — both native and those that came here from other lands — want to make sure that the cone gets a Hawaiian name.
