Anonymous vows to take down, expose QAnon

The hacking collective Anonymous is pledging to expose the people behind the "QAnon" conspiracy theory.

The anarchist hacking group slammed the QAnon conspiracy as potentially dangerous and driven by a “brainless political agenda” in a video posted Sunday to what is widely considered the most reliable Anonymous Twitter account.

“We will not sit idly by while you take advantage of the misinformed and poorly educated,” the group said in the video, which was posted with the hashtags #OpQ and #OpQAnon.

The video depicts various figures with Anonymous masks acting out certain aspects of the QAnon conspiracy against a constant backdrop of the letter “Q.”

Two years ago, an actual headline from CBS in Sacramento was, “Donald Trump Tells California ‘There Is No Drought’ As Drought Continues.”

And now, on Sunday evening, Trump’s denial of reality in California continued, as he attempted to blame the ever-worsening wildfires in the state on everything but climate change.

“California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren’t allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized,” the President tweeted. “It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean. Must also tree clear to stop fire spreading!”

The tweet came just hours after the Trump administration declared the California wildfires a major disaster.

Experts, however, immediately mocked Trump’s explanation — and his refusal to acknowledge that climate change is a major driver in worsening wildfires.

Last Tuesday, a conspiracy theory that had been festering in the fringes of the Trump-friendly internet burst into the mainstream, when some supporters of the President were seen holding QAnon signs at a Trump rally in Florida.

Media outlets rushed to explain, debunk, and “analyze” the conspiracy, which broadly claims that Trump is fighting a global cabal of deep-state pedophiles who also like to indulge in Satanic Abuse at cement plants in Arizona. In response, naturally, the popularity of Q exploded, and the main QAnon subreddit (the topical page on Reddit where proponents gather online) quickly posted disclaimers about how they were neither violent nor a cult, but merely “researchers.”

Whatever they prefer to be called, their views don’t hold up to any amount of scrutiny, and this week, the newfound media attention began to deeply splinter the movement. Pro-Trump posters are embarrassed by the conspiracy, former supporters are trying to backtrack on claims they ever believed it, and posters on 4chan and 8chan are just viciously trolling everyone.

Let’s start with the pro-Trump posters, who have been eagerly disavowing QAnon. Townhall columnist Kurt Schilchter described QAnon as “frivolous nonsense,” while Trump fanboy and alleged fraudster said it was “BS” to contemplate that Trump was actually working with Mueller. In a Reddit discussion, former Press Secretary Sean Spicer simply replied “No.” when asked whether QAnon was legitimate. Even WikiLeaks has jumped onboard to call QAnon a “Pied Piper” operation.

Despite predictions of a “blue wave” in this November’s midterm elections, Democrats face a brutal Senate map, and have to fight to hold onto control of 10 seats in states that voted for President Trump. One of the closest and likely one of the most expensive races is going down in Florida, where Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), who has represented the state since 2001, is facing the toughest challenge of his career from Gov. Rick Scott (R), a close Trump ally.

“This is really a clash of the titans,” Republican political strategist Rick Wilson told TPM. “They both have run multiple statewide races and they’re good at it.”

The latest Mason-Dixon poll of likely voters showed a tight race, with Scott slightly in the lead and with 9 percent of voters undecided. Over the past few months, despite Republicans’ poor performance on a generic ballot nationwide, Mason-Dixon found that Scott has climbed in the polls while Nelson has “remained static” — numbers reflected in other public polling.

National Democrats acknowledge the state is going to be a huge money drain for them, but say they’re confident Scott can be defeated.

UK poised to ask Russia to extradite Salisbury attack suspects

Exclusive: Kremlin certain to reject request that will reignite simmering diplomatic row

The British government is poised to submit an extradition request to Moscow for two Russians suspected of carrying out the Salisbury nerve agent attack that left one person dead and three injured, according to Whitehall and security sources.

The move comes after months of painstaking investigation by hundreds of officers from the police and the intelligence agencies. They have pieced together the movements of the two Russians, from their entry into the UK through to their departure.

The Crown Prosecution Service, which prepared the extradition request, has completed the process and is ready to file, the sources said.

The request will reignite the simmering diplomatic row with Russia, which is certain to reject it, prompting another round of tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions.

The Russian billionaire said to have given financial support to a woman charged with spying for Moscow in Washington has received funding from Kremlin-backed banks and has ties to close associates of Vladimir Putin.

Konstantin Nikolaev worked with two banks and two oligarchs who are all now under US sanctions. Nikolaev was also appointed to a Russian military advisory panel, while his wife has a senior role at a state-backed arms company.

Maria Butina, a 29-year-old Russian woman charged with working to infiltrate the National Rifle Association (NRA) and influence US politics, told senate investigators that Nikolaev, a transportation magnate, gave her financial backing, according to a source with knowledge of her testimony.

Butina tried to set up secret backchannels with American politicians, according to US prosecutors, who say she was directed by a senior Russian official and was in contact with suspected Russian intelligence officers. She has pleaded not guilty to operating as a foreign agent and is in jail awaiting trial.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS — The day after a federal judge rejected Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s documentary proof of citizenship law in June, Scott Moore stood on the steps of the same federal court where Kobach had just been defeated and announced a new federal lawsuit against the elections chief.

Moore, a Mission Hills, Kansas resident, had recently learned that his personal information had been exposed when Kansas sent its voter file to another state participating in the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program, commonly known as Crosscheck.

Kobach became the lead administrator of the database software that compares voter records across the country when he became secretary of state in 2011. Until recently, roughly two dozen states participated in the program, which research shows is incredibly flawed and produces false positives in more than 99 percent of cases it identifies as double voters. Citizens with foreign-sounding names are far more likely to be flagged, and potentially purged from voter rolls, through the program.

DC subway drops plan to provide dedicated trains to white nationalists

D.C.’s Metrorail system has reportedly killed a proposal to provide dedicated trains for white nationalists planning to march through Washington D.C.

Yesterday, Metro’s board chairman and District of Columbia Councilmember Jack Evans (D) said the transit system was considering providing dedicated rail cars for white nationalists attending the planned “Unite the Right” rally, in an effort to keep the peace between them and expected counter-protesters. However, after Metro’s largest union argued that hate groups should not receive special service, Evans and transit system leaders have nixed the idea.

Evans told NBC 4 in Washington, D.C. that “Metro will not be having a separate train, or a separate car, or anything separate for anybody at this event that’s gonna happen next Sunday.”

During last year’s “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, white nationalists and some Nazis attacked counter-protesters. One drove a car into a crowd, killing counter-protester Heather Heyer.

One of Metro’s scenarios for keeping the peace would have allowed white supremacist rally participants to board three dedicated rail cars at the East Falls Church Metro stop in Virginia and take it to Foggy Bottom in downtown D.C., then receive a special police escort to the rally on the National Mall.

Metro’s ATU Local 689 union leaked the plans to the press, noting that because 80 percent of its membership are people of color, “the very people that the Ku Klux Klan and other white nationalist groups have killed, harassed and violated,” the union would not take part in the unprecedented “special accommodation” plan.

Republican gerrymandering wall is starting to crumble

One of retired Justice Anthony Kennedy’s final acts as a sitting justice was to stare partisan gerrymandering directly in the eye and cry out a resounding “meh.” A pair of cases argued last term were supposed to deliver sharp blows to such gerrymandering. Instead, the Court punted, Kennedy retired, and there is no longer a plausible way to form a majority that could halt this anti-democratic practice.

Yet, even as the Supreme Court refuses to enforce the Constitution, two of the most gerrymandered states dealt severe blows to partisan election rigging this year, and a third is likely to follow suit this November.

So gerrymandering is not dead, and there is a very real risk that the Supreme Court will invigorate it if Judge Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed to replace Justice Kennedy. For the moment, however, the GOP’s death grip on U.S. House redistricting is starting to crumble.
