Pro-Trump Media And Russian Bots Push Self-Debunking Story Attacking Obama Attorney General For Usin

Source: National Memo

Reprinted with permission from MediaMatters.

Fringe media figures and outlets that support President Donald Trump are trying to scandalize former General Loretta Lynch’s use of an alias in her government emails, even though government officials have used the practice before, Lynch’s use of the alias had been disclosed last year, and the emails are still subject to records requests.

Kim Dotcom, a dubious figure known for spreading conspiracy theories, claimed on August 4 that Lynch may have used the alias Elizabeth Carlisle “to communicate with DOJ officials.” Dotcom based his claim on emails given to the conservative group American Center for Law And Justice (ACLJ) — where Trump attorney Jay Sekulow is the chief counsel — as part of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. In his tweet, he added, “Dear Internet, investigate!” The next day, a user on the pro-Trump Reddit forum “r/The_Donald,” a forum known in the past to spread conspiracy theories, claimed that a death certificate showed that Lynch “used her grandmother’s maiden name as alias.”

The implication of wrongdoing by Lynch then reached Jim Hoft of the pro-Trump website The Gateway Pundit, who wrote that “internet sleuth” Dotcom “dropped a bomb on Twitter,” and pointed to the “r/The_Donald” user who “discovered that Loretta Lynch used her grandmother’s maiden name ‘Lizzie Carlisle’ as her alias.” He added that Lynch “told Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) under oath that she only uses official email in November 2016 — after these above emails were sent,” concluding, “Lynch committed perjury.” The allegation also reached far-right conspiracy theory outlet Zero Hedge, which claimed that Lynch “has been busted”; far-right trolls Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec; and discredited birther Jerome Corsi of the conspiracy theory website Infowars. A few also alleged that Lynch had committed perjury. Another forum known for pushing conspiracy theories, 4chan’s “/pol/,” also hyped the alias and perjury allegation.

Why The NAACP Said Enough To School Privatization

Reprinted with permission from AlterNet.

The reaction to the NAACP’s hard-hitting new report on charter schools, calling for tighter regulation and an end to for-profit schools, was swift and furious. Charter advocates and school choice proponents painted the NAACP as out of touch, or worse, doing the bidding of the teachers unions. These critics are missing what’s most important about the civil rights group’s strong statement. School privatization has allowed state governments to avoid their obligation to educate children of color, especially the poor. The NAACP said “enough” this week.

First, some background. Last year, the NAACP passed a resolution calling for a moratorium on the expansion of charter schools until problems with accountability and the loss of funding from traditional public schools are addressed. The civil rights organization then formed an education task force that spent the year visiting cities, including New Haven, Memphis, New Orleans and Detroit. The report issued this week expands on the previous resolution and reflects the testimony of parents and practitioners. Among the task force’s recommendations: tighter regulations and oversight for existing charters, a ban on for-profit charters, and a reinvestment in traditional public schools.

In response, charter advocates were quick to take their case to the press, citing school performance data and polls on the popularity of charter schools among Black parents. Think pieces and commentaries have called out the NAACP as irrelevant, under the sway of the nation’s two teachers unions, and too willing to ignore the failings of public education. As school choice advocate Chris Stewart wrote in his response to the NAACP report: “If the NAACP is honest, it will apply the same demands to all public schools. If it cares about the education of Black kids, it will stay focused on the inequities in the system."

Secrecy And Suspicion Surround Trumps Deregulation Teams

Reprinted with permission from ProPublica.

When President Trump ordered federal agencies to form teams to dismantle government regulations, the Transportation Department turned to people with deep industry ties.

One appointee had previously lobbied the department on behalf of American Airlines. Another held executive roles for several electric and hybrid car companies regulated by the department. A third was a lawyer who represented United Airlines in regulatory matters.

The three appointees have been identified by ProPublica and The New York Times in a continuing effort to track members of the deregulation teams. The appointments, previously unreported, follow a pattern identified by the two news organizations: By and large, the Trump administration has stacked the teams with political appointees, some of whom may be reviewing rules their former employers sought to weaken or kill.

A full vetting of industry connections has been difficult because some agencies have declined to provide information about the appointees — not even their names.

And lets not forget, that if they can privatize the Air Traffic Control, this is the first of many steps to gouge the public with these "fees". And we should all take heed on this because when England privatized the rail system it collapsed

The simple secret to why Californians are paying less for Obamacare plans

Source: Think Progress

“Rising premiums” has been the rallying cry for Republicans looking to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Lawmakers pointed to 2018 premium hikes as a big reason to repeal and replace current health law. Some insurance companies are requesting especially high rates for 2018 ACA plans, as high as 30 percent or more in some states.

In California, statewide premiums will rise 12.5 percent, and some northern counties will see a 33 percent increase. But most California residents could avoid the soaring premiums rates, as they’ve done in the past, by shopping smart. That’s easier to do than in a lot of other states, because California is helping make their health care shopping simple.

“Consumers are price-sensitive,” senior fellow with NORC at the University of Chicago Jon Gabel told ThinkProgress. “Consumers search for lower-cost plans, and tend to move from high-cost to low-cost plans.”

Gabel is the author of a recent study by The Commonwealth Fund that found California residents on average pay less for insurance than advertised rates suggest. He and other researchers tracked premiums for ACA plans offered versus plans purchased. Using enrollment data between 2014-2016, the study found customers respond to price increases by switching to cheaper plans.

Why Christian nationalists love Trump

Source: Think Progress

This is the first in a series on Christian nationalism and the religious groups supporting Donald Trump. Stay tuned for further entries in the coming weeks.

It was a Saturday, but Donald Trump was already at church.

Technically, he was at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., preparing to address the crowd at a “Celebrate Freedom” concert on Independence Day weekend. But the July 1 event, which was designed to honor veterans, accented its patriotism with a distinctly religious flare: it was hosted by megapastor (and vocal Trump devotee) Rev. Robert Jeffress, and shortly before the president took the podium, a Southern Baptist church choir burst into a rendition of “Make America Great Again”—an original composition based on the president’s campaign slogan.

Trump loved it (he tweeted a music video of the song on July 4), and echoed its sentiment a few minutes later by invoking his go-to ideology when speaking to his base: Christian nationalism.

CNNs Ana Navarro: More people going in and out of Trumps White House than a Las Vegas brothel

Source: Raw Story

Republican strategist and CNN contributor Ana Navarro railed against President Donald Trump on Monday, describing his first 200 days in the White House as a chaotic failure.

In a series of tweets on Monday, Trump boasted that he had improved the stock market, border security, the U.S. military, the economy, and had successfully appointed a Supreme Court justice.

But besides putting conservative Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, Navarro said it was hard to find successes in the Trump administration.

“Look, in 200 days he has had very few good days,” she said. “He failed at his signature promise of [replacing and repealing Obamacare.] His White House has had more people going in and out for quickies than a Las Vegas brothel. The chaos that has ensued is absolutely insane.”

“He keeps fabricating, making up things and outright lying,” Navarro continued. “He keeps tweeting like a deranged person. He has caused international incidents. The leaks out of his White House are like cheese cloth. So, no, I don’t think you can say this has been a good 200 days.”

Chief of Staff John Kelly gives up on trying to control Trumps Twitter after latest tweet-spasm: re

Source: Raw Story

Newly appointed White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has already accepted that he will not be able to control President Donald Trump’s inflammatory use of Twitter.

Over the past week, media reports have praised Kelly, a retired Marine general, for imposing military discipline on the White House.

“Mr. Kelly cuts off rambling advisers midsentence,” The New York Times reported. “He listens in on conversations between cabinet secretaries and the president. He has booted lingering staff members out of high-level meetings, and ordered the doors of the Oval Office closed to discourage strays.”

According to Bloomberg, Kelly also had high hopes for curbing the president’s use of Twitter.
