BERKELEY Two prominent figures in the movement to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline and its routing under the Missouri River will be at La Peña Cultural Center on Aug. 25 to discuss their campaign to dismiss charges against people arrested during the past years protests at the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota.
Chase Iron Eyes, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the 2016 Democratic candidate for North Dakotas Congressional seat, is lead counsel of the Santa Cruz-based Lakota Peoples Law Project. He faces 10 years in prison if convicted of felony charges in connection with the protests, according to a news release from the law project.
Daniel Sheehan, a constitutional attorney, is chief counsel of Lakota Peoples Law Project and head of the legal team defending Iron Eyes and another water protector, Holy Elk, according to the press release.
In the coming months, my trial and those of other water protectors falsely charged with crimes at Standing Rock will expose the illegal wedding between big oil, their militarized private security, and the government intent on silencing the people and exploiting the Earth for the sake of profit, Iron Eyes said in the release.

Alex Chow, Nathan Law and Joshua Wong key leaders of 2014s umbrella movement protests were jailed for between six and eight months on Thursday for their involvement in an unlawful assembly that helped launch those historic demonstrations.
Supporters have denounced the courts ruling as a politically motivated attack on the semi-autonomous citys democracy movement while Hong Kongs last governor, Chris Patten, called it a deplorable decision that would deepen fears about Beijings erosion of the territorys freedoms.
Police said about 22,000 demonstrators joined the march across Hong Kong island from Wan Chai to the court of final appeal in its financial centre on Sunday afternoon to voice their anger, local broadcaster RTHK reported.

Schiff: Trump Needs Some More Adults In The Room, Not Miller Or Gorka
Source: Talking Points Memo
By ESME CRIBB Published AUGUST 20, 2017 10:07 AM
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) on Sunday said President Donald Trump needs the very best people around him in the White House in the wake of Steve Bannons departure as Trumps chief strategist.
Speaking on CNNs State of the Union, Schiff said there is a broadening recognition that there are some serious issues with our President that arent going to go away, that arent going to get better, and indeed with the pressures of the job may very well get worse.
And I think for that reason at a minimum we need the very best people around him in the White House, Schiff said. And that means not people like Bannon, not people like Miller, not people like Gorka, but rather some more adults in the room.
Bannon ended his tenure as chief White House strategist on Friday.
Schiff said he certainly thinks theres an issue with the Presidents capability.

Feds urge judge not to shut down Dakota Access pipeline during review
Government lawyers are urging a federal judge not to shut down the Dakota Access pipeline while regulators conduct a new environmental review of the project because there is a serious possibility the review will reaffirm the pipelines earlier permits.
In a court filing late Thursday, the Army Corps of Engineers said their new review of the controversial pipeline could maintain the conclusion that it poses no risk to North Dakotas Lake Oahe, a lake bisected by the pipeline that local Native American tribes consider environmentally and culturally important.
There is a serious possibility that the Corps will reaffirm its original conclusions based in part on its conclusion that the pipeline segment under Lake Oahe is highly unlikely to spill into the lake, Corps lawyers said in their filing.

New York City police take a knee at rally in support of Colin Kaepernick
Dozens of current and former New York City police officers, including famed corruption whistleblower Frank Serpico, turned out Saturday at a rally in support of getting free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick a job in the National Football League.
The former San Francisco 49ers player became a controversial figure last year after he refused to stand for the national anthem in what he called a protest against oppression of people of color.
He opted out of his contract in March and became a free agent, but so far, no NFL teams have signed him for the upcoming season, which kicks off in three weeks.
The gathering in Brooklyn featured about 75 mostly minority officers wearing black T-shirts reading #imwithkap.

Rush Limbaugh says white supremacists and the KKK are not the problem, warns of second civil war
Source: Think Progress
Donald Trump sent shock waves through the political world with his broad defense of participants in a white supremacist rally last weekend, praising them for obtaining a permit and describing some as very fine people. He previously put Nazis, the KKK and white nationalists on the same moral plane as those who showed up to protest them, casting blame on many sides.
Some have been repelled by Trumps conduct. Two White House business councils disbanded as some of the nations top CEO found any association with Trump too toxic to maintain. Scores of charities have canceled scheduled events at Trumps private club, Mar-a-lago. A small but growing group of Republican members of Congress have criticized Trump directly.
At the same time, powerful forces on the right are now lining up behind Trump, validating and extending Trumps views.

National Park Service ends policy encouraging parks to ban plastic water bottle sales
Source: The Hill
The National Park Service has ended a policy encouraging national parks to end the sale of plastic disposable water bottles that was aimed at reducing pollution and plastic waste.
In a statement, the NPS said they were lifting the policy to expand hydration options for recreationalists, hikers, and other visitors to national parks.
While we will continue to encourage the use of free water bottle filling stations as appropriate, ultimately it should be up to our visitors to decide how best to keep themselves and their families hydrated during a visit to a national park, particularly during hot summer visitation periods, acting National Park Service director Michael T. Reynolds said in the statement.
According to the NPS, only 23 of the 417 NPS sites had implemented the policy, which was put into place under former President Obama.
