Trump administration takes another stab at hurting federal workers

By
Lisa Needham -
July 15, 2019

The administration is trying to undermine the membership and effectiveness of federal labor unions.

The Trump administration is going after federal unions again.

This time, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is proposing a federal rule that would let federal employees cancel their union dues at any time. This could hurt the ability of unions to represent and protect federal workers.

Federal unions require that members "opt in" — that they affirmatively decide to join the union, rather than needing to opt out if they don't want to join the union. That's one reason why the federal workforce has a relatively low rate of union participation — about 27%. However, if people join the union and then want out, they can only do so at one-year intervals, much like open enrollment for health care.

What OPM is proposing is to let union members opt out at any time throughout the year. This might seem like a small change, but the administration is hoping it has the effect of making more people leave the federal unions more often.

GOP congressman defends Trump's racist attack as 'obviously not racist'

Rep. Andy Harris said that the racism the entire world saw was not actually racism.

In a Monday morning radio interview, Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) defended Trump's racist tweets attacking four Democratic congresswomen.

Trump told the four congresswomen — all women of color, and all U.S. citizens — to "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."

Harris was asked about Trump's comments during an interview on WBAL radio, a Maryland news station.

Governor pushes back at feds on protection for rare whales

By DAVID SHARP 14 minutes ago

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A directive for new protections for endangered right whales represents an “absurd federal overreach” that places an unfair burden on Maine’s signature lobster fishery, Gov. Janet Mills said.

She ordered the state Department of Marine Resources to draft an alternative plan that would reduce the impact on lobstermen.

“My administration will not allow any bureaucrat to undermine our lobster industry or our economy with foolish, unsupported and ill-advised regulations,” she wrote in a letter this week to the lobster industry.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wants the state to present a plan in September for reducing the lobster industry’s threat to right whales by 60%.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wants the state to present a plan in September for reducing the lobster industry’s threat to right whales by 60%.

The plan would mean reducing by half the number of lobster trap lines that could entangle whales. It would also require weaker rope for traps in federal waters.

Judge sides with Pentagon and Amazon in cloud bidding case

Source: Associated Press

By MATT O'BRIEN 12 minutes ago

A federal judge is dismissing allegations that bidding for a $10 billion cloud computing contract with the Pentagon was rigged to favor Amazon.

Friday’s ruling dismissing Oracle’s claims clears the Defense Department to award the contract to one of two finalists: Amazon or Microsoft.

Oracle and IBM were eliminated during an earlier round, but Oracle persisted with a legal challenge claiming conflicts of interest.

Court of Federal Claims Judge Eric Bruggink said Friday that Oracle can’t demonstrate favoritism because it didn’t meet the project’s bidding requirements to begin with. Bruggink also sided with a Pentagon contracting officer’s earlier finding that there were no conflicts affecting the bidding.

The Pentagon says the project is vital to national security. It wants to pick a vendor as soon as Aug. 23.

You know what, why give a fucking contract that is going to be funded by the taxpayers to a oligarchy, that paid no fucking taxes and got a tax break to boot, and made over so far, 59 billion in profits in the first quarter............................and has for the cloud, did the Pentagon by chance look at how China has been hacking that platform lately or they going to use pay pal for the payment plan, with this "Classified data", like Amazon doesn't have enough "data" or they couoldn't keep the information "in house"........................

Trump's lawyers just had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad morning

Turns out, the rule of law still applies to the president.

Judge Neomi Rao is a cartoonishly right-wing judge. President Donald Trump’s appointee to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit once criticized a French court decision upholding a ban on “dwarf tossing.” She’s argued that much of the executive branch is unconstitutional, in part because members of Congress sometimes write letters to heads of agencies.

And yet, at a hearing Friday morning concerning President Trump’s ability to resist congressional oversight, even Rao appeared skeptical of many of the president’s lawyer’s arguments. Though the bulk of her questions suggested that Rao, a former law clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas and a former senior Trump White House official, will give her vote to Trump, even she grew impatient with many of Trump’s claims. And there is little risk that she picks up a majority.

The other two judges, Judges David Tatel and Patricia Millett, spent much of their morning eviscerating Trump’s arguments. So, while it remains to be seen if the Supreme Court will bail out Trump in Trump v. Mazars, his lawyers nevertheless had a bad day in the D.C. Circuit today.

The case involves the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform’s subpoena seeking many of Trump’s financial documents from his accounting firm. Last May, a federal district court rejected Trump’s attempt to block those subpoenas. That decision is now on appeal to the D.C. Circuit.

Trump's golf club is now hosting events for strip clubs instead of pro golf tournaments

By
Oliver Willis -
July 10, 2019

Trump will financially benefit from a strip club's 'caddy girl' auction at his golf club.

Trump's golf resort in Doral, Florida, has lost so much business since he became president that it is now hosting a strip club's event.

The resort, described by the Washington Post as "one of the jewels of Trump's hotel empire," once hosted marquee events for the PGA.

But now, the Post reported on Tuesday, the club is hosting a golf tournament on Saturday organized by the Shadow Cabaret, a strip club located in Hialeah, Florida.

The Cabaret will "allow golfers to pay for a dancer to serve as their 'caddy girl' while they play at the president's club," the Post reported. Emanuele Mancuso, the club's marketing director, told the paper that the services of the women will also be auctioned off to golfers.

Justice Department really doesn't want Mueller's deputies talking to Congress

By
Dan Desai Martin -July 10, 2019

Trump's Department of Justice continues their attempted cover-up, pushing two top Mueller aides to not testify before Congress.

The Justice Department told two of special counsel Robert Mueller's top deputies to refuse to testify before Congress, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees were negotiating closed-door testimony from Aaron Zebley and James L. Quarles III, two of Mueller's top staffers who worked on the Mueller report. But last week, the Justice Department barged in and asked that the two men not appear before Congress, even though neither currently works at the department.

Because neither man is currently employed by the department, Trump's cronies cannot legally bar them from appearing before the committees. But the request "could have a chilling effect" and "give them cover to avoid testifying" if they don't want to, the Times said.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the deputies could shed more light on Mueller's investigation into both the Trump campaign's numerous contacts with Russian operatives as well as Trump's repeated attempts to obstruct justice.

Next Friday, Eddie Martin will work his last day at the General Electric plant in Salem, Virginia, after working there for seven years.

GE announced in June last year it was shutting down the Salem plant, which opened in 1955. More than 250 employees were affected, as those jobs will be sent overseas to India. Martin is one such employee.

He says: “It’s horrible. You have over 200 people losing their jobs just so the company can build a $200m plant in India and pay those people $3.50 an hour.”
