A group of over 20 Republican senators on Monday urged President Donald Trump’s Treasury Department to bypass Congress to unilaterally hand the wealthiest Americans another massive tax cut.
In a letter (pdf) led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), the GOP senators called on Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to index capital gains to inflation, a move that would primarily reward rich investors.
According to Bloomberg, the Trump White House is “developing a plan” to cut taxes for the rich by indexing capital gains to inflation.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday delivered a speech in Jamestown, Virginia, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of democracy in America.
But many viewers pointed out that as Trump started his speech, he appeared to have something stuck in his hair — which many people believed was a fly or another bug.

Sen. Kevin Cramer joined the chorus of Republicans defending Trump's racist attacks on Baltimore.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), who is white, argued that someone snickering about his home state could make him "a victim of racism."
Cramer made his statement on Monday in the course of defending Trump against criticism of his multiday racist meltdown targeting Baltimore and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD).
"I could be a victim of racism, but I don't offend that easily," Cramer told NBC reporter Frank Thorp.
Asked to explain his claim, Cramer laid out an absurd comparison. "Well, if somebody said something about being from North Dakota, every now and then I get a snicker about it, somebody will say something about North Dakota in some snide way, I don’t offend because I'm comfortable with where I come from," he replied.

Watch Trump get shut down by protester: 'You can't send us back'

Trump said it was 'ok' if anyone made his event 'as uncomfortable as possible.' So someone did.
Trump was forced into silence as a protester interrupted his speech in Virginia on Tuesday to shame him for his racist attacks.
"Heading to Jamestown, Virginia. Word is the Democrats will make it as uncomfortable as possible, but that’s ok because today is not about them!" Trump wrote before he made the trip from the White House to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first representative legislative assembly.
So a protester took him up on his challenge.
"Mr. President you can't send us back, Virginia is our home," the protester shouted, holding up signs saying "Deport Hate" and "Reunite My Family." Trump had to stop his speech as the man spoke and was clearly not happy about being interrupted.

The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement Monday, explaining that they were boycotting the event.
"The participation of the President is antithetical to the principles for which the caucus stands," the group said. "The commemoration of the birth of this nation and its democracy will be tarnished unduly with the participation of the President, who continues to make degrading comments toward minority leaders, promulgate policies that harm marginalized communities, and use racist and xenophobic rhetoric."

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos isn't bothering to protect LGBTQ students anymore

It's a break from the Obama administration, which made a strong commitment to LGBTQ youth.
With Betsy DeVos at the helm, the Department of Education has functionally ceased to investigate complaints brought by LGBTQ students.
According to a new report from the Center for American Progress (CAP), the department has wholly undermined the civil rights protections for those students. This stands in stark contrast to the Obama administration, which made a strong commitment to issuing guidance and investigating complaints.
That is all gone now. The department isn't investigating most complaints brought by LGBTQ students. That's particularly true for those brought by trans students. And when the department does investigate, it has become highly unlikely it will require any corrective action on the part of the school.
It isn't as if the Education Department kept this secret. In early 2018, DeVos confirmed the department was no longer investigating complaints from trans students over their right to use the bathroom that conforms to their gender identity.

LGBTQ students aren't the only ones who have fallen victim to DeVos' cruelty. She has been equally awful to students who were ripped off by shady lenders, particularly veterans. She has also pointedly looked the other way when her own department issued a report confirming that racial bias fuels disciplinary procedures in schools.
DeVos is overseeing the dismantling of her department's regulatory functions and happily attacking the most defenseless people her agency is supposed to protect. With that, she's the perfect Cabinet member for the Trump era.

Manhunt Underway For Two Radicalized Canadian Teens Wanted For String Of Murders

They were just two small-town teens from rural Vancouver Island who bonded over video games and anime. But then something went sideways, and their interests morphed into shared fantasies featuring Nazis, guns, and animated pornography.
This week, they became the objects of a national manhunt in Canada, accused of murdering a couple of young tourists and a man who lectured on botany at the University of Victoria in rural British Columbia—and yet another vivid reminder of the toxic and lethal results of the recruitment of “red-pilled” young white men into white nationalist ideology.
Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, and Kam McLeod, 19, were charged this week by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the murders of two tourists—Chynna Deese, 24, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and her boyfriend, Lucas Fowler, 23, of Sydney, Australia—and a 64-year-old man from Victoria named Leonard Dyck, whose body was found near the two teenagers’ burned-out truck.
Deese and Fowler had been traveling up the remote Alaskan Highway route through western British Columbia. Their bodies were discovered in a ditch not far from their broken-down Chevy van on July 14. Dyck’s body was found on July 19 in the vicinity of British Columbia’s Dease Lake, about a six-hour drive from where the first two bodies were found.

Helsinki, Finland (CNN) – On a recent afternoon in Helsinki, a group of students gathered to hear a lecture on a subject that is far from a staple in most community college curriculums.
Standing in front of the classroom at Espoo Adult Education Centre, Jussi Toivanen worked his way through his PowerPoint presentation. A slide titled “Have you been hit by the Russian troll army?” included a checklist of methods used to deceive readers on social media: image and video manipulations, half-truths, intimidation and false profiles.
Another slide, featuring a diagram of a Twitter profile page, explained how to identify bots: look for stock photos, assess the volume of posts per day, check for inconsistent translations and a lack of personal information.
The lesson wrapped with a popular “deepfake” — highly realistic manipulated video or audio — of Barack Obama to highlight the challenges of the information war ahead.

A private border wall construction project lauded by Trumpers nationwide is actually partially on Mexican soil, Mexican government engineers alleged in photos their American counterparts shared with the builders this month.
Tempting an international incident, the border wall group isn’t budging.
Instead, they’ve moved to attack mode, with their founder calling the binational body that governs the border “50% OWNED by MEXICO” and “UN like” — fighting words, among private border wall fundraisers.
Brian Kolfage, whose group “We Build The Wall” has raised a whopping $25 million for border wall construction on GoFundMe, estimated that the “boulders” from his wall project currently on the Mexican side of the border weighed around two hundred pounds each.
His contractor has refused to move them, he said.

Kolfage, characteristically, blasted the gate dispute across social media and urged his hundreds of thousands of donors and followers to urge the commission to do the right thing. Now, the gate is locked closed at night and open during the day as negotiations continue.
Kolfage claimed the landowner in Mexico next to the private wall is fine with the new boulders on his property: He “doesn’t have a problem with the rocks being there at all,” Kolfage said.
Spener, the IBWC foreign affairs officer, was unimpressed.
“The concern about the encroachments was brought to our attention by the Mexican government,” she wrote, “which is the entity we deal with.”

Say Wha? Trump Floats Investigation Of Obama's Book Deal

It appears President Trump was searching for an Obama-era scandal — and came up short.
After weighing in on congressional Democrats’ ramped-up oversight efforts Friday, Trump turned his attention to his predecessor.
“We want to find out what happened with the last Democrat president,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, for no apparent reason. “Let’s look into Obama the way they have looked at me from day one. They looked into everything that we’ve done. They could look into the book deal that President Obama made. Let’s subpoena all of his records.”
What prompted the book deal reference is anyone’s guess. But it could be that Trump, a man obsessed with setting records, is stung that former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama received an unprecedented $65 million advance for their post-presidency tell-alls.
