China backs Hong Kong chief, slams protesters for violence

Source: Associated Press

By JOHNSON LAI 16 minutes ago

HONG KONG (AP) — China’s government strongly backed Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s embattled administration on Tuesday, saying the occupation and vandalizing of the city’s legislature by pro-democracy protesters amounted to “serious illegal acts” that endangered the social order.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Beijing condemned the acts that saw several hundred demonstrators break through glass and steel barriers to enter the building on Monday night.

Geng said China’s central government strongly supported Hong Kong’s government and its police force in dealing with the incident in accordance with law.

“The violent attacks ... are serious illegal acts that trample on the rule of law and endanger social order. We strongly condemn it,” Geng told reporters at a daily briefing.

Trump claims homelessness 'is a phenomenon that only started two years ago'

President Donald Trump seemingly took credit for homelessness starting during his administration during a bizarre interview with Fox News personality Tucker Carlson.

“You come to where we are now, Osaka, or Tokyo and the cities are clean, there’s no graffiti, no one going to the bathroom on the streets,” Carlson said. “Very different than our cities.”

“New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles have a major problem with filth,” he argued.

“It’s very sad,” Trump replied.

“Why is that?” Carlson asked.

“It’s a phenomenon that started two years,” Trump claimed.

China condemns violent Hong Kong protests as 'undisguised challenge' to its rule

BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - China on Tuesday condemned violent protests in Hong Kong as an “undisguised challenge” to the formula under which the city is ruled, hours after police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters who stormed and trashed the legislature.

A representative of China’s Hong Kong affairs office denounced the demonstrators, who are furious about proposed legislation allowing extraditions to China, and said Beijing supports holding criminals responsible, state media said.

The former British colony of Hong Kong returned to China in 1997 under a “one country, two systems” formula that allows freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China, including freedom to protest and an independent judiciary.

Monday was the 22nd anniversary of the handover.

Beijing denies interfering, but for many Hong Kong residents, the extradition bill is the latest step in a relentless march towards mainland control.

Rich get richer, everyone else not so much in record U.S. expansion

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Last month Pink Floyd frontman David Gilmour sold his guitar collection for $21.5 million, including one piece - his famed “Black Strat” Fender Stratocaster - that went for nearly $4 million to the owner of the U.S. National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts.

The “Money” singer set a musical instrument sales record in the charity auction, marking yet another milestone for a booming market just weeks after New York-based art dealer Sotheby’s Holdings (BID.N), auctioned Claude Monet’s “Meules” for $110.7 million, the most ever for an Impressionist painting.

And it is not just instruments or paintings in high demand among the world’s billionaire set. Auction houses themselves now appear to be prized vanity purchases: Just a few days before the Pink Floyd auction, Franco-Israeli cable magnate Patrick Drahi, whose firm Altice earned significant money in the United States, made a $3.7 billion bid for Sotheby’s, which had just hosted the Monet sale.

Welcome to the longest U.S. economic expansion in history, one perhaps best characterized by the excesses of extreme wealth and an ever-widening chasm between the unfathomably rich and everyone else.

After Sanders points out poorest have zero or negative wealth, WaPo fact checker slammed for calling

Published 33 mins ago

By Common Dreams

Critics of massive wealth inequality in the United States defended a statistic frequently cited by 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday after Glenn Kessler, author of the Washington Post‘s “Fact Checker” column, claimed the fact that the bottom half of the country has zero or negative wealth was “not especially meaningful.”

The statistic in question was brought up most recently by Sanders during the Democratic primary debate last week:

“We have three people in this country owning more wealth than the bottom half of America,” Sanders said.

The statement, Kessler said, is factually true—but he rejected Sanders’s suggestion that the inequality evidenced by the fact means that a major correction to the U.S. economy is required.

“This snappy talking point is based on numbers that add up, but it’s also a question of comparing apples to oranges,” Kessler wrote. “But people in the bottom half have essentially no wealth, as debts cancel out whatever assets they might have. So the comparison is not especially meaningful.”

Reporter who saw Ocasio-Cortez in Texas says Border Patrol is lying about what happened

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said in a series of tweets Monday that she was harassed and intimidated by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents while touring a facility in Texas. After her claims, CBP went on the attack against Ocasio-Cortez, but third parties are calling the attacks a lie.

Ocasio-Cortez described what she saw at the facility, and how the CPB treated an elected leader while she was there. Like something out of a teen drama, the CPB followed her accusations with their own accusations and attacks.

“Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., screamed at federal law enforcement agents ‘in a threatening manner’ during a visit to a U.S. Border Patrol facility in El Paso, Texas, Monday afternoon and refused to tour the facility, according to two people who witnessed it,” tweeted Anna Giaritelli for the conservative paper The Washington Examiner.

New America reporter Jonathan Katz said that he was on the scene and observed the interactions. They’re noting what CPB alleged.

“I’ve been outside all the facilities she’s touring today around El Paso, and according to everything I’ve seen the part about her leaving the tour is a lie. @AOC was inside each one for the maximum amount of time—first one in, last one out,” he tweeted.

Trump threatens to delay the Census -- but his DOJ spent weeks telling the Supreme Court he can't: CN

Last week, the Supreme Court threw President Donald Trump’s plan to rig the 2020 Census into chaos by temporarily blocking the administration from including a citizenship question. The justices left open the possibility that the question would be constitutional, if the administration can convince a lower court they have a reason for the change that is not “contrived” — although with census forms needing to be printed within weeks, Trump has almost no time to do this.

Faced with this obstacle, Trump told reporters on Monday that he is now “looking at” just delaying the census altogether until he can push the case through federal court. The problem is that delaying the census is unconstitutional — and it’s not just liberals who say so. As CNN’s Pamela Brown noted, Trump’s own Justice Department has spent weeks telling the Supreme Court there is no legal way to delay the census.

“The president doubled down on his belief that it’s important to find out if someone is a citizen,” Brown told Wolf Blitzer of “The Situation Room.” “But, Wolf, it’s unclear how exactly it would work in terms of delaying the census. The Constitution requires a census every ten years. And the president’s own DOJ has been arguing for weeks to the court that you can’t delay the census.”

The census is a massively important government undertaking, and the count is used to determine everything from how many congressional districts each state gets, to how much federal funding is appropriated for roads, schools, and hospitals, to where businesses can open new offices and create jobs. Experts have broadly warned that asking about citizenship — which can already be estimated using other methods — will result in fewer people responding to the census, which would mean states and communities that skew toward minorities and Democrats could lose representation and funding.

Ted Cruz compares himself to Rosa Parks in insane lawsuit

Claims Law Blocking How Much He Can Be Reimbursed From Donor Funds Is Violating His First Amendment Rights

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) is comparing himself to the woman known as “the first lady of civil rights,” and “the mother of the freedom movement,” Rosa Parks. Parks famously refused to follow the law, engaging in civil disobedience by refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger.

The far right wing Senator from Texas is suing the Federal Election Commission (FEC), claiming a bipartisan law controlling how candidates are allowed to reimburse themselves from donor funds threatens his First Amendment right to speech.

He claims in a court filing it is like telling “Rosa Parks [to sit] in the back of the bus.”

Cruz, as Buzzfeed reported in April, “is suing to get rid of limits on how much he can reimburse himself for his campaign against Beto O’Rourke.” Cruz loaned his own campaign $260,000, but legally can only repay himself $250,000. He wants the remaining $10,000.

-snip-

In other words, Cruz – who has said LGBT people fighting for equality are on a “jihad” against Christians – says the law is injuring him because he thinks he has a constitutionally-protected right to donor funds.

This is the number one reason and many reasons why Citizens United should be repealed..................because Ted Cruz is having a hissy fit............................
