Ethiopian crash families criticize Boeing over donation plan

Katharine Houreld

NAIROBI (Reuters) - The families of victims of an Ethiopian air disaster on Thursday criticized Boeing’s plan to donate $100 million to unspecified charities and communities affected by two crashes, saying it was too vague and that families should have been consulted first.

Some of the families said Wednesday’s announcement from the U.S. planemaker also triggered an avalanche of unwelcome phone calls from relatives and acquaintances who believed they’d just received compensation.

“This is unacceptable. They did not consult us, we only learned this morning,” said Quindos Karanja, a retired Kenyan teacher whose wife, daughter and three grandchildren were killed in the March 10 disaster. “This is not in good faith.”

The crash of the Boeing 737 MAX jet came only five months after the same model of plane plunged into the sea off Indonesia. The two disasters killed a total of 346 people, triggered the global grounding of the aircraft and wiped billions off Boeing’s (BA.N) market value.

Boeing makes $100 million pledge for 737 MAX crash-related support

SEATTLE/CHICAGO (Reuters) - Boeing Co said on Wednesday it would give $100 million over multiple years to local governments and non-profit organizations to help families and communities affected by the deadly crashes of its 737 MAX planes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

The move appears to be a step toward repairing the image of the world’s largest planemaker, which has been severely dented by the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane in March just five months after a similar crash on a Lion Air flight in Indonesia. The two crashes killed a total of 346 people.

Boeing is the target of a U.S. Department of Justice criminal investigation into the development of the 737 MAX, regulatory probes and more than 100 lawsuits by victims’ families.

The multiyear payout is independent of the lawsuits and would have no impact on litigation, a Boeing spokesman said.

Robert Clifford, a Chicago-based attorney with several of the Ethiopian crash cases, suggested some of Boeing’s $100 million pledge could be spent assisting efforts to return the remains of victims to their families.

“These families are distraught about the effort to get back their loved ones,” Clifford said. “They want closure.”

Boeing has also offered to match any employee donations in support of the families and communities impacted by the accidents through December.

Egypt on Wednesday condemned planned sale of Tutankhamun statue head

By Agence France-Press

Egypt on Wednesday condemned a planned London auction by Christie’s of a head from a statue of Pharoah Tutankhamun, which is set to proceed despite Cairo’s concerns over paperwork.

Egypt’s ambassador to the UK “regrets that the auction house intends to conduct a new sale involving Egyptian artefacts tomorrow (Thursday), including the head of Tutankhamun, without the backing of papers”, said a joint statement by its foreign and antiquities ministries late Wednesday.

“The auction house still has not furnished the papers with Egyptian authorities”, the statement added.

Christie’s expects the 28.5-centimetre (11-inch) brown quartzite relic from the Valley of the Kings to fetch more than £4 million ($5.1 million, 4.5 million euros).

Pentagon Guidance to Troops in Trump's July 4th Event: Say I Love My Tank

Mother Jones obtained a guide for how the Defense Department wants military personnel to speak to the media.

Tanks are rolling into Washington, DC, tomorrow for Donald Trump’s “Salute to America,” a revised version of the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration that the president promises will be the “show of a lifetime.” It will be a full-on military display, which—in addition to the tanks—includes “multiple flyovers,” military music, a Trump speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial to top Republican donors and political appointees, and, of course, fireworks. All of which has caused the National Park Service to divert nearly $2.5 million typically used to improve its parks to cover the costs.

Realizing this is will be a controversial event, the Pentagon has distributed instructions to service members participating in the shindig on what to do if approached by a reporter, and the advice is essentially this: Say you love your tank.

Since this is a military celebration, there’s sure to be plenty of military personnel in attendance—alongside hordes of reporters angling to get the inside scoop from service members about what they really think of this whole celebration. Not on Trump’s watch.

Mother Jones obtained a photo of a card that is being distributed to participating service members with instructions from the Pentagon about what to say—and not to say—when speaking with members of the media. The Department of Defense would like service members to be clear that they are “proud” on several levels. Under the overall messages, the guide suggests: “I am proud of my job and my vehicle/tank. I am glad to share my experience with American People.” It also proposes that they say: “I am proud to honor the Nation and the Armed Forces during this Independence Day Celebration.”

That’s followed by “Dos” and “Don’ts,”—do “smile and have fun,” don’t “guess, lie, or speculate.” And the card closes with general tips for talking to a reporter. “Relax and speak to America,” it recommends.

"Relax and Speak to America"...................if I don't I can be brought up on insubordination charges, just a moment I have to pull out my cue card before I speak.............just relax............................, I'll say it for you..............FUCK HIM, and ......................the "guy" in the white house is a traitor, and still has bone spurs ..........................

BUSTED: Fox News paid Heather Nauert $167,000 -- while she was a Trump administration spokesperson

By Bob Brigham

Former Fox News anchor Heather Nauert was paid by the network while serving as a top spokesperson for Trump administration.

The revelations were made in a financial disclosure form obtained by the good-government group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

“She reported receiving $167,000 from 21st Century Fox, which she characterized as “Salary,” in Part 2 of her termination report. Part 2 covered the period from January 1, 2018, eight months after she entered government, to March 31, 2019, the date she left the State Department,” CREW reported.

There may be ethical issues with the arrangement.

GOP fears Trump reelection campaign will be severely damaged by the NRA crisis

By Oliver Willis -
July 3, 2019

The NRA's crisis situation is very bad for Republicans, especially Trump.

Republicans are concerned that the seemingly never-ending parade of scandals at the NRA could seriously hurt Trump's reelection efforts.

On Wednesday, Politico reported on the concerns about the NRA, who has been a pivotal part of the right's get out the vote efforts in the past.

"The turmoil is fueling fears that the organization will be profoundly diminished heading into the election, leaving the Republican Party with a gaping hole in its political machinery," Politico noted.

The outlet reported that Republicans are already raising alarms and asking the NRA to come clean with its plans for 2020 so they can address possible deficiencies before the race begins in earnest.

White House aides fear disastrously low turnout at Trump's July 4 celebration of himself

By Emily Singer -
July 3, 2019

Top Trump officials fear Trump's July 4 celebration of himself will be a repeat of his inauguration crowd disaster.

The tanks are in place; the fighter jets are ready to fly; the fireworks are ready for deployment; and your taxpayer dollars have been spent for Trump's egotistical July 4 "salute" to himself at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

All the wildly inappropriate political event lacks is ... people wanting to attend.

Politico reported on Wednesday that top officials at both the White House and Republican National Committee are freaking out that no one is going to show up to Trump's speech on Thursday.

In fact, they worry that the paltry crowd size at the event will be reminiscent of Trump's disastrous Inauguration Day attendance — which angered Trump so much that he demanded then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer to lie to the public about the size of the crowd gathered to watch Trump be sworn in.

Doctors sue North Dakota for forcing them to give patients 'patently false' information

By Lisa Needham -
July 3, 2019

North Dakota wants to make doctors tell their patients about a procedure 'wholly unsupported' by medical evidence.

The American Medical Association (AMA) thinks doctors shouldn't be forced to lie to their patients.

That's why the country's largest association of physicians just sued the state of North Dakota over the state's newly passed anti-choice law. It requires doctors to tell patients that a medication abortion may be reversible.

Physicians don't want to tell their patients that for one big reason: It's an outright lie.

As the AMA said in their lawsuit, the claim medication abortions can be reversed is "wholly unsupported by the best, most reliable scientific evidence."

Arizona GOP senator in trouble as challenger pulls in massive fundraising haul

By Dan Desai Martin -
July 3, 2019

Former astronaut Mark Kelly brought in an eye-popping $4.2 million in the last three months as he attempts to oust Republican Sen. Martha McSally.

Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) could see trouble on the horizon as her likely opponent, former astronaut Mark Kelly, raised $4.2 million over the last three months in his quest to unseat her, the Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.

In a show of grassroots enthusiasm, more than 90% of Kelly's donors over the past three months gave less than $100. The average contribution was $45, according to the campaign.

Since he announced his campaign in February, Kelly has raised $8.3 million, a show of strength in what most experts expect to be one of the most competitive Senate races in 2020.

"Kelly is one of the first people mentioned by national Democrats when they talk about their chances of picking up Republican seats — he's usually mentioned first," Larry Sabato, a political science professor at the University of Virginia, told the Arizona Republic. "He may be one of the very few Senate candidates to outspend an incumbent and that doesn't happen very often."

https://shareblue.com/mark-kelly-fundraising-martha-mcsally-arizona/

"This campaign started with a sonic boom just 140 days ago and it hasn't slowed down," Jen Cox, Kelly's campaign manager, said in a statement.

Democrats need to flip at least three Senate seats from red to blue in order to have a chance at regaining control of the chamber. With millions in the bank, Kelly is making sure Arizona will continue to be at the top of the list for Democrats.

And also how McSally is basically aiding and abetting, enabling a crook, and packing the courts to hurt people later on................ ..................................

Trump using overseas foreign actors to portray real Americans in his MAGA campaign ads

Published 19 mins ago

So Much for President Trump’s ‘Buy American and Hire American’ Executive Orders
President Donald Trump is using actors from nations around the globe to portray supposedly real Americans in his presidential campaign re-election ads.

Less than three months after he took office, President Trump signed his “Buy American and Hire American” executive order. “It shall be the policy of the executive branch to buy American and hire American,” the order stated.

The goal: “to promote economic and national security and to help stimulate economic growth, create good jobs at decent wages, strengthen our middle class, and support the American manufacturing and defense industrial bases,” the order reads.

Two years later, Trump signed yet another executive order, “intended to expand his ‘Buy American, Hire American’ initiative to encourage agencies to apply such requirements to new types of government purchases,” CNN reported.
