Republicans want to weaken role of states in review of fossil fuel applications

States' denial of water quality permits angered the fossil fuel industry.
MARK HAND
JUL 31, 2018, 4:53 PM

Senate Republicans introduced legislation on Tuesday that would take regulatory power away from states in order to expedite the approval of energy infrastructure projects that are facing stiff resistance from the public.

The bill, dubbed the Water Quality Certification Improvement Act of 2018, is part of an effort by the Trump administration and its allies in Congress to reduce the ability of states to use their authority under section 401 of the Clean Water Act to prevent the construction of projects such as pipelines or coal export terminals.

“The water quality certification process is being abused by a few states in order to delay important projects,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee said Tuesday in a statement.

Along with Barrasso, the bill was introduced by Sens. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), and Steve Daines (R-MT). They described their proposed changes to the Clean Water Act as placing “procedural guardrails and requirements on states as they process requests for certification to prevent future abuses.”

'Like a kidnapping': Harrowing video shows ICE snatch a 25-year Minnesota resident from his family

Plainclothes, refusal to show ID, threats of federal assault charges -- all in the broad daylight of a county courthouse.
ALAN PYKE
JUL 31, 2018, 4:34 PM

Carlos knew it was dangerous for him to go to the courthouse on July 26.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have dramatically stepped up their hunt for undocumented people, friends from his church-based social justice group warned him, even those who’ve lived in the U.S. for decades like he has.

But it was important to him to do the right thing. His dedication to inpatient and outpatient rehab, and the ample evidence of his beloved status in his community, had helped his lawyer convince a Minnesota judge that Carlos should be given probation rather than a jail term. Besides, Carlos figured ICE knew he was scheduled for a check-in with immigration officials just a couple weeks later, and he’d shown up consistently to those meetings for years.

Yet the second Carlos arrived in court with family members and his long-time church friend Catalina – each of whom ThinkProgress is identifying only by first name because of the community’s fear of reprisals from ICE and local cops alike – they knew something was wrong. Two unfamiliar, burly white men — the spitting image of some of the Minnesotans who’ve gone out of their way to hurl verbal abuse at Catalina in the past two years, she said – were in the back of the courtroom, watching Carlos closely as he stood next to his lawyer to listen to the judge’s ruling.

Trump debuts new, incoherent talking point about collusion with Russia

"Collusion is not a crime" -- unless you're Hillary Clinton.
AARON RUPAR
JUL 31, 2018, 9:48 AM

After many months of unequivocally insisting there was “NO COLLUSION” between his campaign and Russia, President Trump hinted at a retreat on Tuesday — tweeting that “Collusion is not a crime, but that doesn’t matter because there was No Collusion (except by Crooked Hillary and the Democrats)!”

Beyond the obvious absurdity of accusing Hillary Clinton of colluding with Russia to defeat herself — after her campaign was the target of Kremlin-orchestrated cyberattacks that were publicly encouraged by Trump and used for pro-Trump propaganda operations — Trump’s “collusion is not a crime” talking point contradicts his previous stance on the matter.

Just over two months ago, Trump wondered why special counsel Robert Mueller wasn’t investigating his 2016 opponent for potential collusion. Apparently, collusion isn’t a crime unless you’re Hillary Clinton.

Trump’s new talking point attempting to downplay the severity of collusion isn’t limited to the president himself.

GOP Georgia Governor Candidate Purged Voter Rolls

As Secretary of State, Kemp removed 591,000 voters
JULY 25, 2018
Greg Palast

Yesterday, the GOP’s Brian Kemp won the Georgia gubernatorial primary. It is not coincidental that this same Kemp, as Secretary of State, removed 591,548 names from the state’s voter rolls in 2017. We expect another big purge in the next few weeks.

The Palast Investigative Fund has given Kemp, currently Secretary of State, 40 days to provide every name of those removed — or Kemp will face a federal lawsuit. Our initial investigation indicates the list is overloaded with voters of color and young voters, i.e. Democrats.

Kemp will face Stacey Abrams in November for the governor’s seat. Abrams told me she fears this ethnic cleansing of voter rolls especially because it is partly directed by Kris Kobach of Kansas.

Fox Journo: US Wants 'Best' Immigrants, Not 'Some Guy's Uncle From Zimbabwe'

By Kate Riga | July 31, 2018 9:49 am

Fox News correspondent Jesse Watters said Monday on “The Five” that President Donald Trump wants the U.S. to have the “best and the brightest immigrants,” as opposed to “some guy’s uncle from Zimbabwe.”

Watters cut across Democratic political analyst Juan Williams, who was saying that Trump wants to cut legal immigration, saying “no, he wants wants chain over, lotto over, merit-based.”

“That would cut legal immigration by bringing in the best and the brightest,” he continued. “So we don’t bring in some guy’s uncle from Zimbabwe.”

“Oh Zimbabwe, thank you,” retorted Williams.

“Or Thailand,” Watters added hastily.

“I get it, Norway, Norway, I want Norway,” Williams said.

Conway Emphasizes Manafort Trial Has 'Nothing To Do With The Campaign'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Matt Shuham July 31, 2018 11:12 am

Kellyanne Conway emphasized Tuesday that The Virginia-based trial of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort "centers on matters that have nothing to do with the campaign."

"I would note for your audience, Bill, that the judge has very strictly instructed no mention of Paul Manafort's role in the Trump campaign: Don't mention Trump, don't mention Russia, don't mention collusion," Conway, who managed Trump's campaign after Manafort, told Fox News' Bill Hemmer Tuesday morning.

She's largely correct: Manafort is alleged to have carried out massive bank and tax fraud, among other things. And both Mueller and Manafort's lawyers have said his campaign work should stay out of the courtroom. Another trial, set in Washington, D.C., will begin in September.

Still, Manafort was charged in the course of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and related matters. And the charges against Manafort were viewed by many as an attempt to get him to cooperate with prosecutors in their cases against other Trump campaign affiliates.

Almost 80% of US workers live from paycheck to paycheck. Here's why

Robert Reich

America doesn’t have a jobs crisis. It has a ‘good jobs’ crisis – where too much employment is insecure, and poorly paid

The official rate of unemployment in America has plunged to a remarkably low 3.8%. The Federal Reserve forecasts that the unemployment rate will reach 3.5% by the end of the year.

But the official rate hides more troubling realities: legions of college grads overqualified for their jobs, a growing number of contract workers with no job security, and an army of part-time workers desperate for full-time jobs. Almost 80% of Americans say they live from paycheck to paycheck, many not knowing how big their next one will be.

Blanketing all of this are stagnant wages and vanishing job benefits. The typical American worker now earns around $44,500 a year, not much more than what the typical worker earned in 40 years ago, adjusted for inflation. Although the US economy continues to grow, most of the gains have been going to a relatively few top executives of large companies, financiers, and inventors and owners of digital devices.

America doesn’t have a jobs crisis. It has a good jobs crisis.

When Republicans delivered their $1.5tn tax cut last December they predicted a big wage boost for American workers. Forget it. Wages actually dropped in the second quarter of this year.

What is QAnon? Explaining the bizarre rightwing conspiracy theory

The sprawling internet theory, beloved by Trump supporters, has ensnared everyone from Tom Hanks to Hillary Clinton

If you happened to be watching YouTube videos on Monday morning and were struck by an urge to check in on one of America’s most beloved movie stars, you were likely in for a nasty surprise.

“Sarah Ruth Ashcraft says Tom Hanks is a pedophile”, read the title of the top video search result for the actor’s name. “Tom Hanks’ Alleged ‘Sex Slave’ Speaks Out”, read another top search result.

Indeed, the top five results – and eight out of the top 14 – were variations on the pedophilia theme, interspersed with the hashtags #QAnon, #Pizzagate and #Pedogate.

These bizarre results, first spotted by the NBC reporter Ben Collins, are not the result of the latest #MeToo era investigation reporting. Instead, they are the entirely unsubstantiated manifestation of a sprawling rightwing conspiracy theory known as QAnon.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jul/30/qanon-4chan-rightwing-conspiracy-theory-explained-trump

-snip-

A YouTube spokesperson provided a statement that did not directly address the Guardian’s questions about the Hanks videos, but noted that the company’s work to “better surface and promote news and authoritative sources” is “still in its early stages”.

By Monday afternoon, hours after the Guardian first queried YouTube, the search results for “Tom Hanks” had reverted to videos of the actor’s appearances on various talk shows. Search for “Tom Hanks pedophile”, however, and you’re back in the world of QAnon.,

Hey, "You Tube", ever here of vetting, or maybe hire someone anyone with the credentials to make sure that this QAnon bullshit belongs in the toilet ......................you would think that your name brand is more important than an ad.................and conspiracy sites.................just to post bull shit..................that could get someone hurt, or did you forget the Pizzagate situation, when a asshole walked in the place.....................
