Lock him up? Democrats are pushing prosecution for Trump -- but those calls alarm some law enforcemen

Published 7 mins ago on June 18, 2019
By Travis Gettys

President Donald Trump — whose rallies are still punctuated with “lock her up” chants” — may face turnabout from his Democratic rivals.

Some Democratic candidates are openly threatening Trump with prosecution once he’s out of office, and those taunts are alarming to some law enforcement veterans, reported Politico.

“Presidents aren’t supposed to suggest there be investigations or prosecutions of particular people, let alone their political rivals,” said Matt Axelrod, a former Justice Department senior official under Obama. “President Trump has flagrantly and repeatedly violated that norm, but that doesn’t mean the norm has been obliterated.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said earlier this month that she preferred prosecution to impeachment, and she was soon joined by Democratic hopefuls Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg in recommending possible prosecution for Trump once he leaves the White House.

WATCH: Alabama GOP official berates reporter about Sodom and Gomorrah after she questions his anti-L

By Brad Reed

Republican Mobile County Treasurer Phil Benson defiantly told a reporter from a local news station to read the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah when she came to ask him about his recent anti-LGBT rant that he posted on Facebook.

The controversy surrounding Benson started when he reacted angrily to a story about a bakery getting sued for refusing to serve an LGBT wedding.

“Freaking queers have gotten too much sympathy,” Benson wrote on Facebook in response to the story.

Local news station NBC 15 sent out reporter Andrea Ramey to question him about his remarks, and he tried to insist that she read Chapter 19 of Genesis, which details the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah over their tolerance of homosexuality.

A Maryland school told them to be quiet -- but see what these students did

Published 1 min ago on June 18, 2019
By Brave New Films

Following the Parkland school massacre, students from Montgomery Country, Maryland were angry, grieving and scared. So what did they do? They quickly formed MoCo Students For Change and mobilized an estimated 6,000 students from over 40 schools in the area to attend a student rally on Capitol Hill that they organized to fight against gun violence.

In Brave New Films’ latest #YouthInAction series, we get a glimpse of what it’s like to organize this event through the perspective of the MoCo students themselves. Watch as they fight for their survival.

MoCo Students for Change is a completely youth-led organization fighting not only for gun control but also for many other social justice issues that affect them locally and nationally including racism, discrimination, voter registration, and immigration policy.

Brave New Films is spotlighting youth-led and intergenerational organizations across the U.S. through its #YouthinAction series. Young people are experts on the issues that impact them and they belong at the decision-making table. It’s time we listen. For more incredible organizations, go toBraveNewFilms.org/YouthinAction

Charitable giving drops after GOP tax 'cut': report

Published 1 min ago on June 18, 2019
By Matthew Chapman

On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that charitable giving dropped 1.7 percent last year, adjusted for inflation, even as the economy surged.

The likely culprit? The GOP tax law, according to a report from Giving USA.

Although corporate donations rose 2.9 percent and foundation gifts rose 4.7 percent in the previous year, charitable donations from individuals — which is where the bulk of actual charity takes place — dropped 3.4 percent, the first time this has happened since the financial crisis.

The GOP tax law significantly changed how the standard deduction works, making it much harder for middle-class families to take advantage of itemized deductions — something that even before the tax law, were disproportionately taken out by the top 1 percent of earners.

I wonder if the republicans would go to Goodwill and ask them if the tax cuts worked................I know my account told me that my charitable giving just wasn't enough it lacked about 20,000 dollars to make the grade..........................

The Supreme Court's Virginia uranium ruling hints at the limits of federal power

Published 4 mins ago on June 18, 2019
By The Conversation

Virginia has the authority to ban uranium mining under state law, even as the federal government regulates the processing of nuclear fuel under the Atomic Energy Act, the Supreme Court has ruled.

Neil Gorsuch, joined by the court’s longest-serving and newest conservatives – Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh – rejected the idea that Congress’ plan for nuclear enrichment could override Virginia’s decision to prohibit uranium mining altogether. On that point, these three conservatives were in sync with three of the court’s liberals, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. This remarkably diverse coalition agreed that the “Commonwealth’s mining ban is not preempted” by federal authority. Chief Justice John Roberts filed a dissent.

I have been involved in this case, Virginia Uranium, Inc. v. Warren, in its various iterations for more than a decade. Before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia School of Law, I worked with the Southern Environmental Law Center, an environmental advocacy organization that had raised grave concerns about a proposed uranium mine near the city of Danville.

All three of the opinions published in Virginia Uranium, Inc. v. Warren are likely to prove significant in future environmental battles – both in the courts and in the court of public opinion.

WATCH: Princeton professor jerks a knot in MSNBC anchor for defending 'innocence' of racist Harvard

Published 3 mins ago on June 18, 2019
By David Edwards

Princeton professor Eddie Glaude gave MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle a lesson in social justice on Tuesday after she spoke out in defense of a student who was rejected by Harvard over racist remarks.

During a panel discussion on MSNBC, Glaude argued that Kyle Kashuv should face consequences for his actions, which include using the N-word and calling to “kill all the f*cking Jews.”

“It makes sense to me that an institution like Harvard would want not to admit him to their community,” Glaude said.

“But if we dug into every old post or private message of every student in America, is there a risk that we could take this too far?” Ruhle said, echoing a recent Fox News segment. “Some people out there are saying they’re kids. Kids are kids. But that is when you accept someone into college, when they’re a teenager.”

Our Orlando Sentinel endorsement for president in 2020: Not Donald Trump Editorial

By Orlando Sentinel Editorial Board

Donald Trump is in Orlando to announce the kickoff of his re-election campaign.

We’re here to announce our endorsement for president in 2020, or, at least, who we’re not endorsing: Donald Trump.

Some readers will wonder how we could possibly eliminate a candidate so far before an election, and before knowing the identity of his opponent.

Because there’s no point pretending we would ever recommend that readers vote for Trump.

After 2½ years we’ve seen enough.

The nation must endure another 1½ years of Trump. But it needn’t suffer another four beyond that.

We can do better. We have to do better.

GOP pollster gets hilariously destroyed after blaming a broken elevator in his European hotel on 'so

Published 18 mins ago on June 18, 2019
By Brad Reed

Republican pollster Frank Luntz drew hackles from across the internet on Tuesday after he blamed a broken elevator at a hotel in Austria on “socialism.”

Writing on Twitter, Luntz complained that the elevator at the Hotel Imperial in Vienna, Austria has not been functioning for three straight days — and said that the European social welfare state was responsible for this purportedly dire situation.

“Please don’t bring European-style socialism to America,” Luntz pleaded.

In fact, the Hotel Imperial is actually owned by hotel giant Marriott, which is based in Bethesda, Maryland.
