turbinetree's JournalA Graduation Gift................for Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania students..............
Graduating eighth-graders received a unique parting gift from their Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, school this week: ballistic shields for their backpacks.
A company that makes the bulletproof inserts gave them to students during a ceremony Monday at St. Cornelius School Catholic School, outside Philadelphia. Faculty members also received the 10-by-12-inch inserts.
The 15 students turned the shields which from a distance look like a thin laptop around and around. Some scratched their heads.
Unequal Technologies, a "protective sportswear" company based in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, says they resist many types of bullets, shotgun blasts, shrapnel and knives.

Source: The Hill
Voters head to the polls in five states Tuesday for a new round of primary contests, and women are once again poised to take center stage. In fact, in one state, women are likely to capture Democratic nominations in a majority of key races.
Heres what to watch on Tuesday night:
Turning LePage in Maine
Crowded fields of Democrats and Republicans are vying for the right to replace term-limited Gov. Paul LePage (R) but theres a wrinkle: This year marks the first time Maine will use a ranked-choice voting system that allocates votes based on a voters preference.
That means it will be days before we know who has won either partys primary, unless one candidate unexpectedly takes more than half the first-place votes.
Democrats expect Attorney General Janet Mills (D) to lead the first-place voting on their side. Outsider Adam Cote (D), a veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and former state House Speaker Mark Eves (D) are also in the running, and the ranked-choice format makes the outcome a true toss-up.
On the GOP side, all four major contenders have cast themselves as successors to LePages legacy, but LePages wife has appeared in advertisements backing state university system trustee Shawn Moody (R). Mary Mayhew, a former state Health and Human Services commissioner, is banking on support from Maines not-inconsequential Catholic population. Two legislative leaders, state House Minority Leader Ken Fredette (R) and Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason (R) are also in the race.

Why do so many Mormons back Trump? Some say it's about the land
Trumps Utah campaign chief shrugs off Stormy Daniels and praises cuts to parks: The land belongs more to me than you

In February 2017, weeks after the inauguration of Donald Trump, a conservative political operative named Don Peay trudged up a steep, sagebrush-covered hillside outside Salt Lake City. Peay served as Trumps campaign manager in Utah and is a hunting advocate who has gone out shooting with rightwing icons such as Dick Cheney, Ted Nugent and Donald Trump Jr.
Peay wanted to point out a particular parcel of public land that used to be overrun by highly invasive cheat grass. Several years ago, he worked with local land managers to revegetate it with native plants favored by deer and elk.
Were proud of what weve done here, Peay said. It shows that local people know the land better than bureaucrats from Washington or tourists from California.
Doesnt it belong to all of us? I asked, noting that the land we stood upon was managed by the federal government, in trust for the American people.
His answer was unexpected.
Yeah, he replied. But it belongs more to me than it does to you.

Climate Change Is Going to Make Scott Pruitt Need So Much Moisturizer
The EPA administrators apparent taste for fancy lotion will become more expensive if his agency continues to undermine efforts to address the planet's warming.
JAMES HAMBLIN
JUN 9, 2018
The head of the Environmental Protection Agency faced renewed scrutiny this weekwith the latest allegations of unethical behavior veering, at times, into the utterly absurd.
For example, Scott Pruitt reportedly attempted to use his position to secure a Chick-Fil-A franchise for his wife; dispatched an aide look into purchasing a mattress from Trump International Hotel; and had security agents drive him multiple places in search of a moisturizing lotion available at Ritz-Carlton Hotels.
It is strictly prohibited for public servants to ask subordinates to do personal errands, so this Mad Lib menagerie of ethical breaches is notably high-risk, low-reward. Together these stories paint a picture of a man who is not simply misusing his officemisappropriating taxpayer funded resources for personal convenience and profitbut appears to not even appreciate that this is wrong. If youre going to abuse your power in such a way that could get you fired, at least go big.
Pruitts apparent habits are more like conspicuously unbuckling his seatbelt only when hes about to pass a police car. Which is why the lotion story is particularly compelling. Did he think this was big? Is moisturizer so important as to risk ones career to procure the perfect bottle?

I really do hope that when we take back the Congress, that this asshole spends more time sitting in a committee hearing answering charges of fraud, and him going to jail, and then the next up Mnuchin, Zinke
This really is like sticking people in the eye with a stick because they are utterly complete assholes......................its like the Teapot Dome bull shit.................but now 21 century newest version

Trump's intense handshake with Macron leads to viral photo
Source: The Hill
A handshake between President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday has gained widespread attention on social media for the thumb imprint the French leader left on Trumps hand.
The two met at the Group of Seven (G-7) summit in Canada over the weekend in what has come to be viewed as a tense gathering among the worlds leading industrialized democracies.
The greeting was reminiscent of another stiff handshake Trump and Macron shared in a meeting last year.
My handshake with him, it wasnt innocent, Macron said of their first handshake. Its not the be-all and the end-all of a policy, but it was a moment of truth.

Head of Canada's auto parts industry association mocks Trump's threat of auto tariffs
Source: The Hill
Flavio Volpe, President of Canada's Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association (APMA), mocked President Trump after he threatened to create new tariffs on automobiles on Saturday, saying Trump would end up hurting Americans.
"So.... youre suggesting using a National Security regulation to charge $8B in tariffs to *American* consumers who buy 1 million cars made by American automakers, containing 60% American parts content, because of the price of milk in Windsor?" Volpe wrote.
Volpe's comment followed after Trump said he would not endorse a joint communique signed with the other Group of Seven (G-7) members at this weekend's summit, and appeared to threaten to impose further tariffs on the country.
Trump's decision not to endorse the joint statement came just hours after all nations had agreed to sign the document, despite previous fears that trade tensions between the U.S. and its allies would lead to the U.S. being excluded.

SINCE 1996, US AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT GAVE OVER $277 MILLION TO FUND LOCAL JAIL CONSTRUCTION
The United States Department of Agriculture provided over $277 million in funding for county jail construction since 1996, according to documents obtained by Shadowproof.
The funding came in the form of grants and long-term low-interest loans through the Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program run by the USDAs Rural Development agency.
Small rural communities are supposed to benefit from the CF program, which is designed to assist residents with the purchase, construction, or renovation of essential buildings, such as hospitals, town halls, libraries, and food pantries. It also funds public safety facilities for fire, law enforcement, and corrections departments.
CF program loans typically have a thirty to forty-year term with fixed interest rates set by the agency (usually around three-to-four percent). Grants are awarded primarily to small and impoverished counties and can only account for a maximum of 75 percent of the proposed project costs. Some counties received a mix of grants and loans.
North Carolina received the most money from the program over the last 20 years, with counties taking $66.7 million in loans since 2005. Their most recent loan was for nearly $20 million to renovate and expand the Bladen County Jail in August, 2015.

Mr. Rogers Had a Simple Set of Rules for Talking to Children
The TV legend possessed an extraordinary understanding of how kids make sense of language.
MAXWELL KING
JUN 8, 2018
For the millions of adults who grew up watching him on public television, Fred Rogers represents the most important human values: respect, compassion, kindness, integrity, humility. On Mister Rogers Neighborhood, the show that he created 50 years ago and starred in, he was the epitome of simple, natural ease.
But as I write in my forthcoming book, The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers, Rogerss placidity belied the intense care he took in shaping each episode of his program. He insisted that every word, whether spoken by a person or a puppet, be scrutinized closely, because he knew that childrenthe preschool-age boys and girls who made up the core of his audiencetend to hear things literally.
As Arthur Greenwald, a former producer of the show, put it to me, There were no accidents on Mister Rogers Neighborhood. He took great pains not to mislead or confuse children, and his team of writers joked that his on-air manner of speaking amounted to a distinct language they called Freddish.
Fundamentally, Freddish anticipated the ways its listeners might misinterpret what was being said. For instance, Greenwald mentioned a scene in a hospital in which a nurse inflating a blood-pressure cuff originally said Im going to blow this up. Greenwald recalls: Fred made us redub the line, saying, Im going to puff this up with some air, because blow it up might sound like theres an explosion, and he didnt want the kids to cover their ears and miss what would happen next.
