Congress votes to extend investigations into 3 shady GOP House members

By Dan Desai Martin -
May 6, 201

The House Ethics Committee voted to reauthorize investigations into Reps. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), Chris Collins (R-NY), and David Schweikert (R-AZ).

On Friday, the House Ethics Committee voted to extend investigations into three Republican members, including two who are out on bail and awaiting trials in federal court.

Reps. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Chris Collins (R-NY) were arrested on federal charges and are awaiting trial. The other member under investigation is David Schweikert (R-AZ), who is suspected of financial improprieties.

According to statements on the Ethics Committee website, the vote to reauthorize the investigations was unanimous on a committee which has five Democrats and five Republicans.

Hunter and his wife were arrested for allegedly using hundreds of thousands of dollars from his campaign to live a lavish lifestyle, including taking international family vacations, buying tickets to the theater, and even paying to transport their family's pet bunny across the country. In another case, the couple bought new clothes for Hunter only to lie about it on official forms, saying the money was spent on gifts for wounded veterans. The couple even allegedly paid for their children's private school with campaign funds.

Trump resort pools were so filthy they had to be shut down 10 times

By Oliver Willis -
May 6, 2019

Trump's pools are nearly as dirty as his presidency.

The swimming pools at Trump's Florida properties have been shut down 10 times in the past 12 months after failing inspections by the state department of health.

Inspectors found a variety of problems with Trump's pools, including improper pH levels, issues with "disinfection feeders" that regulate chlorine levels, as well as faulty safety features like handrails and ladders.

The wrong levels of pH and chlorine can lead to dangerous conditions that cause the spread of skin, ear, eye and gastrointestinal diseases.

"Swimming pools at Trump resort properties in Florida are cited for poor water quality and other health and safety violations far more frequently by the state's Department of Health than pools at comparable luxury properties," Quartz reported on Monday.

Minnesota GOP shrugs at election security: People are 'hacked all the time'

By Lisa Needham -
May 6, 2019

Republicans in Minnesota are refusing to accept federal funds that would help secure the state's voting systems.

GOP state legislators in Minnesota are refusing to allocate federal money to combat election hacking because "people are being hacked all the time."

In the wake of Russian interference in the 2016 election, Congress appropriated $380 million to the states to increase the security of elections. However, Minnesota requires that the Legislature must vote to accept the money. It remains the only state in the country that hasn't accepted this federal funding, which amounts to $6.6 million.

Inexplicably, the Republican majority in the state Senate has only authorized the allocation of $1.5 million, even though Minnesota was one of 21 states targeted by hackers during the 2016 election.

The person most responsible for blocking those funds is Minnesota's former secretary of state, Mary Kiffmeyer, who once served as the state's top elections official and was responsible for election security.

-snip-

Minnesota's current secretary of state, Democrat Steve Simon, has a detailed plan for what he'd do with that federal money, including cybersecurity training for counties and cities, modernizing the state's aging voter registration system, and monitoring state databases in real time to catch suspicious events right away.

By law, Minnesota's legislative session must end by May 20, 2019, though it is possible for the governor to call a special session. Legislators don't return to work until the beginning of 2020, by which point it will be far too late to effectively use the federal funds to help secure Minnesota's elections.

But the Minnesota GOP would rather play politics than ensure the state successfully combats cyber-intrusions in the 2020 elections.

Turkey to re-run Istanbul election lost by Erdogan's AKP

ANKARA/ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish authorities on Monday scrapped the result of a vote for Istanbul mayor lost by President Tayyip Erdogan’s candidate, responding to calls by his AK Party for a re-run, in a move that hit the lira and drew opposition accusations of “dictatorship.”

The High Election Board ruled that a fresh Istanbul mayoral contest will be held on June 23. The AK Party representative on the board, Recep Ozel, said the decision was based on unsigned results documents from the March 31 election and on some ballot box officials not being civil servants.

Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), which narrowly won the mayor’s office in the country’s largest city, called the ruling a “plain dictatorship.”

Kati Piri, the European Parliament’s Turkey rapporteur, said the decision “ends the credibility of democratic transition of power through elections” in the country.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - There were no survivors when private jet crashed between the U.S. city of Las Vegas and Monterrey in northern Mexico with at least 13 people on board, authorities said on Monday.

The wreckage of the plane was found via aerial surveillance in a remote mountainous zone in the northern municipality of Ocampo, the Coahuila government said in a statement.

A photograph published on local television network Milenio showed what it said were the burnt remnants of the plane, broken into pieces, spread over charred earth.

The Coahuila state government said in a statement the flight plan listed 13 people on board, though some media reported that there were 14 on the plane. It said no survivors were found.

Pelosi said Trump might not leave office if he loses in 2020. He once said himself he might not.

Pelosi said Trump might not leave office if he loses in 2020. He once said himself he might not.

In 2016, the president said he might not accept the election results if he didn't like them.

In a New York Times feature interview this weekend, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) warned that it’s likely President Donald Trump will contest the results of the next election in an attempt to stay in power, especially if he loses by a thin margin. While this may sound like an extreme concern, it’s substantiated by Trump’s own rhetoric — he refused to say back in 2016 whether he would concede the election.

Pelosi’s specific concern is that if the 2020 election produces a very narrow victory for Democrats, Trump will reject the outcome by claiming that it was rigged, perhaps by regurgitating vacuous claims about Democratic voter fraud. She had the same concern last year, speculating that if Democrats only took back the House by a few seats won by narrow margins, “he would poison the public mind. He would challenge each of the races; he would say you can’t seat these people.”

Pelosi said only a decisive, overwhelming victory will convince him to step aside.

Trump himself has previously cast doubt on his ability to respect the results of an election he has lost. During the 2016 election, Trump regularly claimed that the election was rigged and that Hillary Clinton was trying to steal it from him. At the third presidential debate, he avoided a direct question as to whether he would concede the election if he were to lose. “I will look at it at the time,” he said.

-snip-

If Trump has cast doubt on U.S. presidential elections before, and even refuses to accept the results of a television award show, it stands to reason that he would not back down from a fight over the results of a national election that removes him from office. It might not even matter whether it’s close or not.

Women's hockey players risk it all by boycotting the status quo in hopes of sustainable pro league

"Billions goes into global hockey. We don't have pennies."
Lindsay Gibbs
May 6, 2019, 8:00 am

Women’s hockey players are fed up with being told to be grateful for the scraps of professional leagues they’ve been given, so they’re taking a stand. Last Thursday, more than 200 of the best women’s hockey players in the world announced they would not suit up for any North American professional women’s hockey teams this season until there’s a league in place with the resources and support deserving of the best athletes on the planet.

“We are fortunate to be ambassadors of this game that we revere so deeply and yet, more than ever, we understand the responsibility that comes with that ambassadorship: To leave this game in better shape than when we entered it,” the women said in a statement.

“We cannot make a sustainable living playing in the current state of the professional game. Having no health insurance and making as low as $2,000 a season means players can’t adequately train and prepare to play at the highest level.”

Up until a few weeks ago, there were two professional hockey options for women in North America. But on March 31, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), abruptly announced it was closing its doors after 12 years due to an “unsustainable” business model. The CWHL, which operated as a nonprofit, began paying its players stipends between $2,000 and $10,000 in 2017. It officially folded on May 1.

Kentucky's GOP governor could lose -- and the White House is panicking

By Emily Singer -
May 3, 2019

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin is the least popular governor in the entire country, and Republicans are worried he could lose his seat.

By all measures, Kentucky should be a safe place for a Republican governor to run for reelection: It's a solidly red state that Trump carried by a 30-point margin in 2016.

Yet GOP Gov. Matt Bevin is the least popular governor in the entire country. And Republicans — including those close to Trump — are terrified Bevin could lose in November and cause embarrassment to both the party and the White House, according to Politico.

In order to try and fend off a loss, Vice President Mike Pence recently held a fundraiser for Bevin in the state, and will headline another fundraising dinner Friday night, Politico reported. Bevin is also set to air television ads beginning on Saturday that prominently feature Trump to try and boost Bevin's standing.

Bevin is also begging Trump to campaign with him in the state, according to Politico.

Ex-Trump aide on board of company that detains migrant kids

By ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON yesterday

MIAMI (AP) — Former White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly has joined the board of the conglomerate that operates the largest facility for migrant children in the country, the company announced Friday.

Caliburn International’s CEO James Van Dusen confirmed the appointment of the former Trump cabinet member in a news release.

Some members of Congress have described “prison-like” conditions in the facility in Homestead, Florida.

“With four decades of military and humanitarian leadership, in-depth understanding of international affairs and knowledge of current economic drivers around the world, General Kelly is a strong strategic addition to our team,” said Van Dusen.
