Cory Gardner defends Trump's attempts to ignore congressional subpoenas and obstruct the House investigation into Trump's criminal activity.
Legal experts say Trump could provoke a constitutional crisis by demanding that no White House officials cooperate with congressional investigations into Trump's possible criminal activity.
But to Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), these efforts by Trump and the White House to obstruct justice are merely "negotiating positions."
"Now the president has said, 'I'm not going to cooperate with the House.' Is that a viable position?" host Craig Silverman asked Gardner in a Saturday interview with Colorado radio station KNUS 710-AM.
Rather than stand up for Congress as a co-equal branch of government, Gardner defended Trump's position.

Trump Doesn't Want Mueller To Testify Because It'll Get Media Coverage

President Trump’s tweet advising special counsel Robert Mueller not to testify was reportedly posted after days of stewing over the amount of media coverage a Mueller hearing would receive, The Associated Press reported.
Trump reportedly believes that Mueller has become an unfairly favored figured in the mainstream media and Trump has growing concerns that a Mueller testimony would get even more coverage than what his former lawyer Michael Cohen received, according to three White House officials and one Republican who spoke to the AP.
While the Justice Department and the House Judiciary Committee tentatively agreed over the weekend that Mueller would testify before the committee on May 15, Trump is clearly not a fan of the proposition. In a tweet on Sunday, Trump said that Mueller “should not testify” and argued that there should be “no redos for the Dems!”

During his final remarks on special counsel Robert Mueller, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) intends to close the book on the investigation and slam Democrats for relitigating Mueller’s findings and the 2016 election, according to Politico Playbook.
“This investigation went on for two years. It’s finally over. Many Americans were waiting to see how their elected officials would respond,” McConnell plans to say according to Playbook’s copy of his remarks. McConnell reportedly intends to repeatedly invoke the phrase “case closed” to hammer down on his point.
“With an exhaustive investigation complete, would the country finally unify to confront the real challenges before us? Would we finally be able to move on from partisan paralysis and breathless conspiracy theorizing?” he will reportedly say. “Or would we remain consumed by unhinged partisanship, and keep dividing ourselves to the point that Putin and his agents need only stand on the sidelines and watch as their job is done for them? Regrettably, I think the answer is obvious.”

When the Democratic presidential primary debates get under way late next month, Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of the fourth-largest city in Indiana, and Andrew Yang, a businessman running on universal basic income who recently captured national attention for his anti-circumcision stance, will be on the stage.
Two sitting senators, current and former governors, members of the House of Representatives past and present, and a relatively high-profile former Cabinet secretary might not be up there with them.
“Not every candidate is guaranteed a spot on the Democratic debate stage, and the first debates are just over 50 days away,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s (D-NY) campaign said in a fundraising email Sunday morning. “The [Democratic National Committee (DNC)] could cut candidates from the stage if they don’t have 65,000 individual donors. We haven’t hit that goal yet, and time’s running out.”
While most campaign fundraising asks are hyperbolic, Gillibrand, the junior senator from New York, is in real danger of missing the first debate. Candidates can qualify one of two ways, as outlined by the DNC itself: Either register at or above 1% in at least three qualifying national polls, or secure 65,000 individual donors. And while Gillibrand has hit the polling threshold, the DNC has also capped the debates at 20 participants, and will reportedly winnow the field based on who has met the donor mark.

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson believes it is “fascist” to suggest a political opponent belongs in jail.
On Monday’s edition of Tucker Carlson Tonight, Carlson warned about the supposed dangers of Democrats’ threats to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the House Judiciary Committee.
“These people are fascist,” Carlson proclaimed in response to footage of Reps. Jackie Speier (D-CA) and Steve Cohen (D-TN) calling for Barr to be imprisoned, a possible — but unlikely — discipline for contempt of Congress.
“Lock him up! Send him to jail!” the Fox News host said in an effort to mock these Democratic lawmakers, with no apparent sense of irony.

NY, NJ sue IRS for info on nonprofit-donor disclosure shift

NEW YORK (AP) — New York and New Jersey want to know how the Internal Revenue Service decided to stop requiring donor information from certain nonprofit organizations — among them big political spenders.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal filed a public-records lawsuit Monday against the tax agency. The suit comes as Montana and New Jersey are challenging the policy change itself in a separate case.
The new lawsuit seeks records that could shed light on the reasons behind the change, which the states worry will hamper their own work as nonprofit watchdogs.
“My office depends on these critical donor disclosure forms to be able to adequately oversee nonprofit organizations in New York,” James said in a statement Monday.

LONDON (AP) — The British government is making a final push to do a Brexit deal with the opposition Labour Party, amid mounting outrage from Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party at the prospect of compromise.
Senior Conservative and Labour lawmakers are meeting to see whether they can reach a compromise. Several weeks of talks have so far not produced a breakthrough.
Almost three years after Britain voted to leave the EU, the date and terms of Brexit remain uncertain because lawmakers have repeatedly rejected May’s divorce deal with the bloc.
That has led her to seek a deal with Labour — to the fury of pro-Brexit Conservatives, who are demanding May’s resignation.
The head of a powerful Conservative committee is due to meet May Tuesday to deliver a demand for “clarity” about her departure date.

ROVANIEMI, Finland (Reuters) - The United States has refused to sign an agreement on challenges in the Arctic due to discrepancies over climate change wording, diplomats said on Tuesday, jeopardizing cooperation in the polar region at the sharp edge of global warming.
Temperatures in the Arctic are rising at twice the rate of the rest of the globe, and melting ice has opened vast untapped oil and gas reserves to potential commercial exploitation.
A meeting of nations bordering the Arctic in Rovaniemi in northern Finland on Tuesday was supposed to frame a two-year agenda to balance the challenges of climate change with sustainable development of mineral wealth.
But Finland’s Foreign Minister Timo Soini said the joint declaration was “off the table” and would be replaced by a short statement from ministers attending the conference.

Addressing the Council, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said President Donald Trump’s administration “shares your deep commitment to environmental stewardship” in the Arctic. But he said collective goals were not always the answer.

On Monday, a long list of former federal prosecutors released a letter arguing that “the conduct of President Trump described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would, in the case of any other person not covered by the Office of Legal Counsel policy against indicting a sitting President, result in multiple felony charges for obstruction of justice.”
The number of signatories to this letter appear to be growing by the hour. As of this writing, it includes 414 former officials.
The letter lays out multiple reasons why, in its signatories’ opinion, Trump’s behavior justifies indicting anyone other than a sitting president of the United States. One of its most damning claims comes close to the beginning of the letter.
"Despite being advised by then-White House Counsel Don McGahn that he could face legal jeopardy for doing so, Trump directed McGahn on multiple occasions to fire Mueller or to gin up false conflicts of interest as a pretext for getting rid of the Special Counsel. When these acts began to come into public view, Trump made “repeated efforts to have McGahn deny the story” — going so far as to tell McGahn to write a letter “for our files” falsely denying that Trump had directed Mueller’s termination."
These two sentences are significant because they speak to Trump’s state of mind when he allegedly sought to fire Mueller. The primary federal law governing obstruction of justice is drafted broadly: As one federal appeals court explains, it “reaches all corrupt conduct capable of producing an effect that prevents justice from being duly administered, regardless of the means employed.” Yet there is an important limit on this statute. It would only apply to Trump’s actions if the government can show he acted “corruptly” when he tried to undercut Mueller.

NRA president: Lucy McBath only won House seat because she's black

This is the House seat in Georgia that used to be held by Newt Gingrich.
The new head of the NRA claims that gun safety advocate Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA) only won her recent election in Georgia's 6th Congressional District because she was a "minority female."
“It is wrong to say like McBath said, that the reason she won was because of her anti-gun stance,” NRA president Carolyn Meadows told the Marietta Daily Journal in an interview published Sunday. “That didn't have anything to do with it — it had to do with being a minority female. And the Democrats really turned out, and that's the problem we have with conservatives — we don't turn out as well.”
Meadows’ argument is not only racist and insulting; it's also completely detached from reality.
It's absurd to suggest that there is an inherent advantage for a black woman running for a congressional seat when in the entire history of the United States, there have only been 47 black women elected to Congress. The first one, Rep. Shirley Chisholm (D-NY), was not elected until 1968.
