Trump skipped the opening of a museum at the Statue of Liberty that celebrates America's immigrant history.
Dignitaries from around the world gathered at the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday night to celebrate the opening of a new museum that offers context on the monument that's become a symbol of America's history of immigrants.
But one major figure was conspicuously absent from the opening: Trump.
Rather than attend the opening of the museum that highlights the history of the statue that became a symbol of America's immigrant fabric, Trump skipped the event to roll out yet another racist immigration proposal in Washington, D.C., that's doomed to failure.
The New York Daily News reported that Trump planned to attend the opening but bagged the idea after hearing rumblings that his attendance wouldn't be celebrated by the guests, who included former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

GOP nominates bigoted author of 'bathroom bill' in key House race

Republican state Sen. Dan Bishop authored the anti-transgender 'bathroom bill' that embarrassed North Carolina and cost millions in lost business.
Republicans chose their nominee in a key special election in North Carolina's 9th District: a GOP state legislator who authored North Carolina's "bathroom bill" — the bigoted, anti-transgender legislation that Republicans were forced to revoke after it embarrassed the state and cost it millions in lost revenue.
State Sen. Dan Bishop defeated a handful of other Republicans on Tuesday to win the nomination for the special election — which is only necessary thanks to Republican election fraud that invalidated the 2018 results.
That leaves Republicans defending themselves against two scandals in the upcoming special election, which will take place on Sept. 10.
There's precedent that the bathroom bill Bishop sponsored — which would have forced transgender individuals to use the bathroom of their gender at birth, and would have banned localities in the state from enacting protections for the LGBTQ community — has hurt GOP politicians in the state.

Lindsey Graham wants to hold toddlers in jail at the border for 100 days

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wants to jail immigrant children for way longer than currently allowed by law.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wants to change the immigration law so that immigrant toddlers and children can be detained five times longer than currently allowed. In an interview with Sunday Morning Futures, Graham said he plans to introduce legislation to detain immigrant children for up to 100 days.
"You can only hold a minor for 20 days. We're going to go to 100 days," Graham said about legislation he plans to introduce on Wednesday.
The current 20-day limit is based on a 1997 settlement which says the U.S. government must swiftly release children into the custody of their parents, relatives, or others without undue delay. But Graham wants to lock up immigrant children for much, much longer.
Graham's legislation mirrors a desire by Trump to detain immigrant children longer.

Georgia governor forced to cancel Hollywood trip to avoid protesters

Brian Kemp is feeling mounting pressure after signing a radical anti-abortion bill into law.
Georgia's Republican governor, Brian Kemp, announced on Tuesday he would postpone a trip to Hollywood — which previous governors made annually to meet with Hollywood movie executives — due to intense blowback after Kemp signed a radical anti-abortion bill.
Kemp was scheduled to attend a Hollywood event on May 22 to promote Georgia's large film industry, which contributed more than $9 billion to the state's economy in 2018. The trip was scrapped after Georgia movie executives expressed fear that "tepid turnout and no-shows from studio chiefs could do lasting damage to the state's movie-making business," reports the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
Several A-list actors, including Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Alec Baldwin, and Don Cheadle, said they would no longer work in Georgia after Kemp and the GOP-led legislature initiated an all-out assault on women's health care. Other big names in the entertainment industry, including David Simon, creator of HBO's "The Wire," said they would not work in the state moving forward.
The bill they object to outlaws abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy, before many women even know they are pregnant. Both women who seek abortions and doctors who perform them could be jailed for up to 10 years if they break the law.

Republican lawmaker indicted for trying to sell his vote

Michigan state representative Larry Inman allegedly sent text messages asking for campaign donations in return for his vote on a wage bill.
Michigan state representative Larry Inman (R), was indicted on Tuesday by a federal grand jury for bribery charges related to a scheme to sell his vote on a bill about wages.
According to the indictment, Inman sent text messages to a carpenter's union soliciting campaign donations in return for a promise to vote "no" on the repeal of a Michigan prevailing wage law.
"I hear the prevailing wage vote may be on Wednesday," Inman said in a June 2018 text message to the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights. He added that while "carpenters have been good to me, where are the rest of the trades on checks?"
In subsequent texts, Inman tossed aside any attempt at subtly, saying, "it's not worth losing assignments and staff for $5,000," and "you need to get people maxed out."

Mnuchin says courts need to settle fight over Trump's taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday that it’s up to the courts to referee his dispute with House Democrats demanding access to President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
Mnuchin told a Senate panel that the fight between the administration and the House Ways and Means Committee chairman, Rep. Richard Neal, “will go to the third branch of government to be resolved.”
Neal, D-Mass., has subpoenaed six years’ worth of Trump’s returns with an eye to examining whether Trump is paying all the taxes he owes and whether his web of businesses has created conflicts of interest with his official actions as president. Neal has set a Friday deadline for the IRS to deliver them.
But Mnuchin said that the Treasury Department was unlikely to comply.
“We haven’t made a decision but I think you can guess which way we’re leaning on our subpoena,” Mnuchin said, adding, “I take great comfort that there is a third branch of government to deal with this important issue.”

Drugmakers will have to reveal medication prices in TV ads

WASHINGTON (AP) — Those ever-present TV ads for prescription drugs will soon reveal prices, too, the nation’s top health official said Wednesday, responding to a public outcry for government action to restrain medication costs.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the Trump administration has finalized regulations that will require drug companies to disclose list prices of medications costing more than $35 for a month’s supply.
“What I say to the companies is if you think the cost of your drug will scare people from buying your drugs, then lower your prices,” Azar said. “Transparency for American patients is here.”
Drug companies responded that adding prices to their commercials could unintentionally harm patients. “We are concerned that the administration’s rule requiring list prices in direct-to-consumer television advertising could be confusing for patients and may discourage them from seeking needed medical care,” said a statement from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the main trade group.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday acknowledged taking massive tax write offs for real estate losses topping $1 billion from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, calling it “sport” among developers like himself during that period.
Trump was reacting to a New York Times report Tuesday that his businesses lost more than $1 billion from 1985 to 1994. The newspaper said its reporting was based on printouts it acquired of Trump’s official IRS tax transcripts, including figures from his federal tax form.
Trump reported business losses of $46.1 million in 1985, and a total of $1.17 billion in losses for the 10-year period.
The president appeared to defend his actions in a pair of tweets early Wednesday.

ALBANY — As the standoff over President Trump’s federal tax returns deepens in Washington, New York State lawmakers say they intend to advance a bill on Wednesday to allow congressional committees to see Mr. Trump’s New York State returns.
State Senator Brad Hoylman, a Manhattan Democrat, confirmed on Tuesday that the State Senate had enough votes to ensure passage of a bill allowing the commissioner of the New York Department of Taxation and Finance to release any state tax return requested by a leader of one of three congressional committees for any “specified and legitimate legislative purpose.”
A tax return from New York — the headquarters of the president’s business empire and his home state — could contain much of the same financial information as a federal return, which Mr. Trump has steadfastly refused to release. On Monday, the Treasury Department denied a request from House Democrats for six years of the president’s federal returns, setting up a likely court battle that could reach the Supreme Court.
“The news of yesterday makes New York’s role even more crucial,” Mr. Hoylman said. He has described his bill as “assisting Congress in its oversight role.”
