UK's Hammond warns of hit to economy from a no-deal Brexit

Source: Reuters

May 21, 2019 / 7:51 AM / Updated 7 minutes ago

LONDON (Reuters) - British finance minister Philip Hammond said a no-deal Brexit would leave the country poorer, repeating his warnings to potential successors of Prime Minister Theresa May, some of whom have advocated an abrupt departure from the European Union.

“First of all there will clearly be short-term disruption which will have an unpredictable and potentially significant effect on our economy,” Hammond told lawmakers in parliament on Tuesday.

“Probably more importantly, all the analysis that the government has done and published - and external commentators have done and published - show that there will be a longer-term effect which means that our economy will be smaller than it otherwise would have been. And I didn’t come into politics in order to make our economy smaller.”

Hey Hammond, you stated this:

“Probably more importantly, all the analysis that the government has done and published - and external commentators have done and published - show that there will be a longer-term effect which means that our economy will be smaller than it otherwise would have been. And I didn’t come into politics in order to make our economy smaller.”

Did you by some chance consult with Airbus, Nissan...........................they are not waiting to see what your Tory party wants to do, because they have basically said that they are going to "move" there operations..............so that means your economy is going to get smaller, laws of economics, and then your right wing party will try to cut back on services.............................because you know austerity and being a fascist party just doesn't quite work, when you have "clusterfuck" party, and this above comment means in my opinion you have no clue what your saying...........................you and Farage, May and others of your ilk are idiots, one is outright racist POS, the other wants to be like Thatcher, and go live in Hotel off the backs of the British taxpayer ...............................

Airbus pledges boxers' counter-punch to new Boeing mid-jet

Source: Reuters

U.S. planemaker Boeing is studying whether to launch a 220-270-seat jet wedged between traditional twin-aisle models like the Airbus A330 and its own 787, and the industry’s bread-and-butter single-aisle models like the A320/321 and Boeing 737.

Airbus aims to defend that space with its own A330neo at the top end and the best-selling A321neo at the bottom - two models boasting new engines on older airframes.

“Those programs are both so mature that it gives Airbus pricing flexibility to address this middle-of-the-market segment,” sales chief Christian Scherer.

He promised what he described as a “left-hook, right-hook approach” to that part of the market as airlines replace Boeing 757 and some larger 767 aircraft.

Let me see, I worked on the 767 and the 757, and the A330, which was a derivative of the A300.
The 757 and 767 had the same cockpit and systems, A300 and A330 had the same cockpit and systems, big difference was the engines on the 757 and 767 and the wing and fuselage configuration and out of the four aircraft I loved working on the 757......................

Georgia Governor Bashes 'C-List Celebrities' Boycotting Over Abortion Law

Those opposing the “heartbeat” law include Natalie Portman, Sean Penn, Ben Stiller and Judd Apatow.

By Nina Golgowski

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) mocked entertainment figures’ vows to boycott his state because of its new “heartbeat” abortion law, calling opponents ― including Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Sean Penn ― “C-list celebrities.”

“I understand that some folks don’t like this new law. I’m fine with that,” Kemp said at the Georgia Republican Convention on Saturday, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We’re elected to do what’s right ― and standing up for precious life is always the right thing to do.”

The governor reportedly went on to declare the Republican Party “the party of freedom and opportunity,” and added: “We value and protect innocent life — even though that makes C-list celebrities squawk.”

The restrictive abortion law signed by Kemp on May 7 outlaws abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected. This can be as early as six weeks of pregnancy ― when many women don’t realize they’re pregnant.

Republicans say Trump can't defy Congress but won't do anything to stop him

By Emily Singer -
May 20, 2019

It's yet another instance where Republicans privately trash Trump but are too scared to actually confront him.

Spineless Republicans strike again.

Politico reported on Monday that a number of Republicans are privately voicing concern about how Trump is obstructing congressional investigations, yet are not prepared to do anything about it.

Two GOP lawmakers — Reps. Tom Cole of Oklahoma and Ken Buck of Colorado — told Politico that they believe Trump's attempts to block aides from complying with congressional subpoenas go too far.

"I’m in Congress. I’m aligned with Congress. I’m not aligned with the executive branch. And I think we have oversight authority over the administration," Buck told Politico. "And if the president has acted illegally, then I think we have oversight authority."

Cole went on to say that unlike what Trump's White House counsel has argued (that Congress needs to have a legislative purpose for their oversight and that there are some things Congress simply cannot probe), he does believe that "there is such a thing as congressional oversight."

First and foremost the public should have a list of the right wing assholes that are upset about there fucking criminal enterprise president, that they did nothing, or do nothing Congress when they / you were in power....................can't haven't both ways there Cole, you did exactly what during those two years....................absolutely fucking nothing your ass should be is jail ....................you had the opportunity to go to the house floor and voice your concern..................what did you do...................you passed............................you asshole and your ilk violated the Constitution, and now your whining..............

Pence 'mafia' is working behind the scenes to kill women's health care

By Emily Singer -
May 20, 2019

Pence has installed his cronies at the Department of Health and Human Services to gut women's health care.

It turns out Vice President Mike Pence has been up to something other than praising Trump's "broad shoulders."

Pence has been quietly working behind the scenes to carry out the Trump administration's goal of gutting funding for women's health care — which Pence helped accomplish by installing allies from his from his days as governor of Indiana, which Politico described as a "cadre of officials that one HHS official called 'Indiana mafia.'"

Installing allies whom he had relationships with back in Indiana — such as Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Surgeon General Jerome Adams, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Seema Verma — have helped Pence push for one of his key priorities: defunding Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood provides sexual and reproductive health care to more than 4.6 million people per year. Yet Pence has been working to strip funds from the organization — a lifeline to millions of women and men who often cannot afford reproductive health care services elsewhere — since his days in Congress.

Betsy DeVos caught using her personal email for government business

By Emily Singer -
May 20, 2019

But her emails!

Back when he thought he could use the issue to attack Hillary Clinton, Trump used to pretend that he thought using personal email for government work was a serious "crime" that should be punished with prison time.

Now, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is just the latest Trump administration official who turns out to have committed the once-cardinal sin of breaking federal records rules on email use.

The Department of Education's Office of Inspector General said Monday that DeVos used her personal email for government business roughly 100 times, and that those emails "were not always being properly preserved" in accordance with federal rules.

DeVos is not the only Trump administration official who has run afoul of those rules.

McConnell thinks it's 'fun' to insult families instead of helping them

By Oliver Willis -
May 20, 2019

Mitch McConnell is reveling in his own cruelty.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell apparently thinks it's "fun" to arbitrarily block popular bills and to mock people who suffer from addiction.

"We need to have a little fun in this business," McConnell said in a Monday interview with Politico. "I used to call myself Darth Vader," he added, comparing himself to the iconic Star Wars villain.

McConnell was explaining why he has come to embrace unsavory nicknames for himself that celebrate his worst tendencies to obstruct and to hurt people. One of those nicknames, the "Grim Reaper," is a reference to his plan to make the Senate a "graveyard" for just about every bill passed by the Democratic-led House.

McConnell has relentlessly obstructed bills passed by the House that reflect the priorities of the majorities of voters who backed Democrats over Republicans in the 2018 midterms — such as reforming elections, improving gun safety, and expanding access to health care. At the same time, he has tirelessly jammed unqualified and extremist right-wing judges through the Senate confirmation process.

Moore Is Done With CNN, Says It Gave Him The Political Equivalent Of 'Salmonella'

By Kate Riga
May 20, 2019 3:46 pm

Former almost-Federal Reserve Board nominee Stephen Moore explained to radio station WMAL why he would not return to CNN as an analyst: “you go to restaurant and you get salmonella, you don’t go back to that restaurant.”

“They basically begged me to come over from Fox and they begged me to sign a renewal for my contract,” he said. “Then literally, the day after I was announced for the Fed, they turned their knives against me. They were vicious and vile.”

Moore was felled by a combination of scandals, including his own sexist past writings, trouble with the IRS and a joke about evicting “a black family from public housing” when the Obamas left the White House.

Here’s TPM’s deep dive on Moore’s rise and fall.

And now your whining.......................about CNN....................did you by some strange chance look at or in the mirror about your principles, your ilk have never grown up and taken a hard look at oneself in the mirror and your hypocrisy...............

Architects of post-9/11 CIA interrogation program to testify

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two former CIA contractors who designed the harsh interrogation program used after the Sept. 11 attacks are being summoned to testify before the military tribunal at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention center.

The government has approved a defense request to have James Mitchell and Bruce Jessen testify in the case against five men charged with helping to plan and assist the 2001 attacks.

The two psychologists are among a dozen approved witnesses listed in a letter sent Monday to the defense. They have never testified in public.

Mitchell and Jessen designed and implemented an interrogation program that included such abusive techniques as prolonged sleep deprivation, confinement in small, enclosed spaces and waterboarding.

They could testify as early as July in a pretrial hearing at the U.S. base.

There's No Boom in Youngstown, but Blue-Collar Workers Are Sticking With Trump

By Trip Gabriel
May 20, 2019

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — In May 2016, David Betras, a Democratic Party leader in the heart of industrial northeast Ohio, sent a memo warning Hillary Clinton’s campaign that it was on the verge of losing Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan because she was not connecting with blue-collar voters. These states “should be easy wins for us,’’ he wrote.

He said he got no answer. As he sees it now, Democrats are still just as out of touch.

Mr. Betras, who recently stepped down as Democratic chairman of populous Mahoning County, said that while Democrats in Washington harp on President Trump’s unfitness for office, his taxes and possible impeachment, the president is solidifying blue-collar support through an aggressive trade war with China, even if his tariffs mean economic pain in the short term.

“The Democratic Party has lost its voice to speak to people that shower after work and not before work,” he said. “All we’re saying is he won’t turn over his tax returns. He’s saying, ‘I’m fighting China to get you better jobs.’”
