A person Treated like Trash, and a person working with the 'crew' on this route for the company

A death. A cover-up. An immigrant meets a terrible end in the Bronx.

by Kiera Feldman, Voice of America, special to ProPublica May 4, 9:30 p.m. EDT

This story was co-published with Voice of America.

The body of the young man lay in the middle of Jerome Avenue beneath the elevated train tracks, the scene lit by the neon blue sign above the shuttered El Caribe restaurant. A garbage truck sat mid-turn at the otherwise deserted intersection in the Bronx.

Emergency medical personnel arrived, records show, and pronounced the young man dead at 5:08 a.m. on Nov. 7, 2017.

The police came, too. Officers taped off the scene, and interviewed the truck driver and his assistant, according to records and interviews. The driver and helper, according to the police report, said the dead man was a stranger who had inexplicably jumped on the truck’s passenger side running board, lost his grip and was run over. The initial police report left blank the spot for the young man’s name.

Within hours, a Bronx News12 reporter said neighbors thought the victim was “a homeless man that they’ve seen in the area.” By afternoon, he was “a daredevil homeless man” in the Daily News.

Marines Open Investigation into Active-Duty White Supremacist

The inquiry begins after a ProPublica and Frontline investigation and as a congressman calls on Department of Defense to better police its ranks.

by A.C. Thompson, ProPublica, and Ali Winston, special to ProPublica May 4, 5 p.m. EDT

This story was co-published with Frontline PBS.

The U.S. Marine Corps said it has opened a criminal investigation into the activities of Lance Corporal Vasillios Pistolis, 19, identified as a violent white supremacist in a recent report by ProPublica and Frontline.

Stationed at North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune and assigned to the 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Pistolis has associated with an array of neo-Nazi organizations, including the National Socialist Movement, the Traditionalist Worker Party, and Atomwaffen Division, a clandestine group that aims to incite a race war, according to interviews and an analysis of video and online postings. Pistolis is under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS, which typically examines felony-level offenses involving Navy or Marine Corps personnel.

“We’re looking into the allegations and do not comment on open investigations,” said Adam M. Stump, an NCIS spokesperson.

Through interviews, photos, videos and the Marine’s own online admissions, ProPublica and Frontline documented his involvement with the various fascist groups and his participation in a string of assaults during last summer’s lethal Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Pistolis also made posts in online chats obtained by Unicorn Riot, an independent media organization.

Actors were paid to attend New Orleans city council meetings supporting power plant

A report says performers were paid between $60 and $200 to support Entergy's efforts.

E.A. CRUNDEN MAY 5, 2018, 2:11 PM

Some of the concerned citizens who turned up at city council meetings in New Orleans to support a proposed power plant were in fact paid actors, according to a new report.

The Lens New Orleans reported Friday that at least four people received payment for appearing at city council meetings last October and February. The meetings were held to survey public opinion on efforts by Entergy, an energy company that serves areas throughout the Deep South, to develop a new power plant in New Orleans East, located in the city’s Ninth Ward.

In March, the city council approved the power plant by a vote of 6-1, overruling the objections of opponents who say the plant is expensive and will pollute eastern New Orleans. A number of local residents spoke in favor of the power plant over the course of more than 22 meetings. But doubts are now being raised over just how authentic those voices were.

Roughly 50 people turned out to support a $210 million effort to build a power plant in the city during one October meeting, but several attendees told the Lens they were paid $60 to wear orange shirts and express support for the endeavor.

'Professor of Killology' at NRA Convention blames violent video games for mass shootings

Source: Think Progress

"Children are committing crimes like no one's ever seen before."

LUKE BARNES MAY 5, 2018, 7:09 AM

DALLAS, TX—Deep in the bowls of the Kate Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in Dallas, America’s most famous professor of “killology” delivered his first sales pitch of the NRA Convention.

Dave Grossman is a former US Army Ranger who for the past 20 years has devoted himself to training military and law enforcement personnel on the reality of killing and combat. His book On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society is required reading for FBI Cadets, and he regularly travels the country training law enforcement officers.

But in his three-hour seminar on Friday, called Sheepdogs! The Bulletproof Mind for the Armed Citizen, Grossman didn’t focus on examining the psychology behind killing. Instead, he painted an apocalyptic vision of the threats facing America, sounding like an anguished preacher in front of crowd that was mostly male, mostly middle-aged and almost completely white.

Grossman weaved together mass shootings from all over the world to support his thesis that violent media, and specifically violent video games, were creating a generation of killers.

So I have question Grossman ................do you think that when a father gives a gun to someone in a family that was not suppose to have one, you know fucking having delusion of grandeur ......................who do you fucking blame.......................or did you miss that one....................

Unleashed Rudy Reveals Chaotic Approach Of Trump's New Legal Team

By Tierney Sneed | May 3, 2018 3:32 pm

When Rudy Giuliani wasn’t blowing up the White House’s account of payments made to a porn star who claimed to have slept with President Trump, or exchanging an old set of legal liabilities for Trump with some new ones, his one-two punch of Fox News interviews Wednesday night and Thursday morning allowed him to workshop some of the arguments Trump’s legal team could be making if its showdown with Special Counsel Robert Mueller escalates.

“You can’t possibly not feel, as a citizen of the world, that his negotiations with North Korea are much more significant than this totally garbage investigation,” Giuliani said on Sean Hannity’s show Wednesday.

The smear campaign against Mueller and the Department of Justice is taking on some sharper elbows, now that a confrontation over whether Trump should have to sit down for an interview seems nigh.

The former New York mayor, who joined Trump’s legal team a few weeks ago, cycled through a whole bunch of anti-Mueller talking points. Here are some of the things he had to say:

Menendez questions opponent's ethics

By KATIE JENNINGS 05/03/2018 06:11 PM EDT

Sen. Bob Menendez went on the offensive on Thursday, accusing his likely Republican opponent, a former pharmaceutical executive, of “unethical” actions, a week after Menendez himself was admonished by the Senate Ethics Committee over his relationship with Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen.

Republican Bob Hugin, the former CEO of Summit-based Celgene Corp., had said Menendez should resign after the ethics panel issued its reprimand. Melgen and Menendez were co-defendants in a federal corruption trial that ended in a hung jury late last year.

“I am not resigning,” Menendez said at an event in Edison. “If anything, Bob Hugin should search his conscience about what he did to cancer patients under his leadership at Celgene."

The event, at an assisted living facility, was billed as a joint effort by Menendez and Rep. Frank Pallone to reiterate their support for two bills — the CREATES Act, S. 974 (115), and SPIKE Act, S. 1348 (115) — which are aimed at lowering the cost of prescription drugs, boosting the availability of generics and increasing price transparency.

Conservatives launch ad campaign to boost Trump's judges

By BURGESS EVERETT 05/03/2018 02:02 PM EDT

Conservatives are ratcheting up the Senate’s judicial wars, with a deep-pocketed group launching a new seven-figure ad campaign hitting Democrats for delaying confirmation of President Donald Trump’s judges.

The Judicial Crisis Network will launch a $1 million ad buy on Saturday, according to officials familiar with the effort. The ad will run on CNN, Fox News and airport channels that might be seen by traveling senators returning from recess next week.

The air support comes as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told radio host Hugh Hewitt in an interview that confirming conservative judges is his “top priority in the Senate.” The majority leader is set to confirm six more Circuit Court judges this month, which would add up to 21 of Trump’s Circuit Court nominees — part of McConnell’s longtime bid to reshape the courts.

Senate Democrats cannot block those judges, but they can delay each of them more than a day under Senate rules. And JCN’s ad buy is specifically calling them out for using Senate rules to drag out judicial confirmations, a tactic also used by Republicans when they were in the minority under President Barack Obama.

Bug exposed Twitter passwords

By ERIC GELLER 05/03/2018 05:18 PM EDT

Twitter is urging its more than 330 million users to change their passwords, saying it had discovered a bug that unmasked login credentials within its internal systems.

The social media company says that its users' personal details weren't revealed to anyone outside the company and that there's no indication of a breach or any maleficence. Still, it has suggested that everyone using the site update their password.

"When you set a password for your Twitter account, we use technology that masks it so no one at the company can see it," the company said in a blog post. "We recently identified a bug that stored passwords unmasked in an internal log. We have fixed the bug, and our investigation shows no indication of breach or misuse by anyone."

Twitter said that it "found this error ourselves, removed the passwords, and are implementing plans to prevent this bug from happening again."

'He can't just lie his way out of every single box'

As a private businessman, Donald Trump managed to skate past bankruptcies and scandals, but as president he's finding it's harder to contradict his own statements.

By CHRISTOPHER CADELAGO and MATTHEW NUSSBAUM 05/03/2018 05:50 PM EDT

Over his decades in real estate, Donald Trump was seemingly able to get away with anything, emerging from each consecutive bankruptcy and scandal ever more famous and with his brand ever more marketable.

As a candidate, he declared he could shoot someone in the middle of New York’s Fifth Avenue and not “lose any voters.”

But as president, Trump is running up against the limits of saying or doing whatever he wants.

The revelation by Rudy Giuliani that his client reimbursed his longtime personal attorney Michael Cohen for a $130,000 hush money payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels contradicted Trump’s own previous denials that he knew anything about the deal—and, despite Giuliani’s intent to tamp down concerns that the October 2016 payment violated campaign finance laws, raised a whole new set of questions about whether Trump failed to disclose a personal loan.
