Pentagon Notifies Congress It's Tossing $1 Billion At New Border Construction

Source: Talking Points Memo

March 26, 2019 10:00 am

The Pentagon notified Congress on Monday evening that it had transferred $1 billion of its budget to the Department of Homeland Security for new border wall construction along the U.S.-Mexico border, CNN reported.

The money will go toward building 57 miles of new fencing, as well as other security measures along the Uma and El Paso portions of the border. The move was made as part of President Trump’s national emergency declaration made to diverge funds from other areas to build his pet-project border wall. The move was roundly criticized and rejected by both the House and the Senate, but Trump vetoed the measure meant to block the emergency declaration.

The transfer of funds sparked immediate uproar from Democrats, who sent a letter to acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan objecting to the transfer and expressing “serious concern” that the Defense Department was bending to “political interference,” according to CNN.

U.S. House to vote on overriding Trump veto of resolution ending border emergency

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A test of U.S. Republican lawmakers’ loyalty to President Donald Trump will come on Tuesday when the House of Representatives votes on a long-shot effort to override his veto of a resolution ending the emergency he declared at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Democratic-led House had little expectation of gaining the Republican support needed to reach the roughly 290 votes, or two-thirds majority, required to override Trump’s veto. The 435-member House passed the resolution last month by 245-182, later joined by the Republican-led Senate.

Coming just days after Trump’s partial exoneration in a report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the House vote will hinge largely on perceptions in Congress that the emergency declared by Trump in order to build a border wall trampled on the congressional power to make government spending decisions.

But the Mueller report, which cleared Trump’s campaign team of colluding with Moscow in its meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, may make it more challenging for Republicans to defy the president on a range of issues, including his border emergency.

Democrats push for Mueller report to Congress by next week, Republicans resist

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A fight brewed between Democrats and Republicans over the public release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, while President Donald Trump kept up attacks on his critics on Monday.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Republican chairman called for an investigation into the origins of the probe of any Trump campaign links with Russians, the Senate leader blocked a second attempt by Democrats to pass a measure aimed at pushing the Justice Department into full disclosure of the report.

Six committee chairs in the Democratic-led House of Representatives called on U.S. Attorney General William Barr, in a letter seen by Reuters, to release the full Mueller report to Congress by April 2. Earlier this month, the House voted 420-0 in favor of making the report public, with no Republican opposition.

Barr on Sunday released a four-page summary of conclusions of the investigation that detailed Russian interference but cleared the Republican president’s campaign team of conspiring with Moscow.

Mitch McConnell disagrees with Trump on Russian election meddling

Source: Think Progress

After years of deflecting and downplaying the notion that Russia interfered in an American presidential election, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced on Sunday that Russia poses a “significant threat to American interests.”

McConnell acknowledged what all U.S. intelligence agencies have been saying for several years only after Attorney General William Barr reported that Russia had, according to special counsel Robert Mueller, interfered in the 2016 presidential race. The report concluded that neither President Donald Trump nor his campaign had collaborated with Moscow.

McConnell stopped short of saying whether Republicans, who control the White House and the Senate, would take action to prevent Russia from interfering in the 2020 election. The intelligence community has been warning the public since 2016 that Russia was meddling in U.S. elections, and they have repeatedly warned that Russia will interfere in the next election.

McConnell’s statement represents a significant departure from the president, who maintains that no one knows who tried to hack the Democratic Party’s computers and email servers. McConnell also tried to stonewall investigations into Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 election, including Russian outreach efforts to help the Trump campaign.

Trump lashes out after Russia probe, cites 'treasonous' and 'evil' acts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump lashed out at unnamed enemies on Monday, accusing them of evil actions and treason, a day after his attorney general released a summary of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s findings clearing the president’s campaign of conspiring with Russia in the 2016 U.S. election.

“We’re glad it’s over. It’s 100 percent the way it should have been,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “I wish it could have gone a lot sooner, a lot quicker.

“There are a lot of people out there that have done some very, very evil things, very bad things, I would say treasonous things against our country,” Trump added without mentioning anyone by name or citing specific actions.

Attorney General William Barr, the top U.S. law enforcement official, on Sunday released a four-page summary of the findings of Mueller’s 22-month investigation that detailed Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election, but said the special counsel had concluded that Trump’s campaign did not conspire with Moscow.

Hundreds of thousands march in London to demand new Brexit referendum

Andrew MacAskill, Alistair Smout

LONDON (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of people opposed to Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union marched through central London on Saturday to demand a new referendum as the deepening Brexit crisis risked sinking Prime Minister Theresa May’s premiership.

Marchers set off in central London with banners proclaiming “the best deal is no Brexit” and “we demand a People’s Vote” in what organisers said could be the biggest anti-Brexit protest yet.

After three years of tortuous debate, it is still uncertain how, when or even if Brexit will happen as May tries to plot a way out of the gravest political crisis in at least a generation.

May hinted on Friday that she might not bring her twice-defeated EU divorce deal back to parliament next week, leaving her Brexit strategy in meltdown. The Times and The Daily Telegraph reported that pressure was growing on May to resign.

The bump stock ban is just days away. What will owners do?

By LISA MARIE PANE an hour ago

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — David Lunsford is an avid gun owner with a firing range on his Texas spread. With bump stocks about to be banned by the U.S. government, he grudgingly decided to sell off his and let someone else figure out what to do with them.

“If I get caught with one, I’m a felon, and it seems like to me that’s entrapment in the biggest way. I bought that thing legally with my hard-earned money,” said the 60-year-old Lunsford, who has at one time owned six AR-15 rifles that he built from kits, as well as a World War II German submachine gun.

The bump stock — the attachment used by the killer during the 2017 Las Vegas massacre to make his weapons fire rapidly like machine guns — will become illegal on Tuesday in the only major gun restriction imposed by the federal government in the past few years, a period that has seen massacres in places like Las Vegas; Thousand Oaks, California; Sutherland Springs, Texas; and Orlando and Parkland, Florida.

Unlike with the decade-long assault weapons ban, the government isn’t allowing existing owners to keep their bump stocks. They must be destroyed or turned over to authorities. And the government isn’t offering any compensation for the devices, which can cost hundreds of dollars. Violators can face up to 10 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.

Facebook left millions of passwords readable by employees

By BARBARA ORTUTAY 43 minutes ago

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook left millions of user passwords readable by its employees for years, the company said Thursday , an acknowledgement it offered after a security researcher posted about the issue online.

“Security rule 101 dictates that under no circumstances passwords should be stored in plain text, and at all times must be encrypted,” said cybersecurity expert Andrei Barysevich of Recorded Future. “There is no valid reason why anyone in an organization, especially the size of Facebook, needs to have access to users’ passwords in plain text.”

Facebook said there is no evidence its employees abused access to this data. But thousands of employees could have searched them. The company said the passwords were stored on internal company servers, where no outsiders could access them. But the incident reveals a huge oversight for the company amid a slew of bruises and stumbles in the last couple of years.

The security blog KrebsOnSecurity said some 600 million Facebook users may have had their passwords stored in plain text. Facebook said in a blog post Thursday it will likely notify “hundreds of millions” of Facebook Lite users, millions of Facebook users and tens of thousands of Instagram users that their passwords were stored in plain text. Facebook Lite is designed for users with older phones or low-speed internet connections and is used primarily in developing countries.

AP FACT CHECK: Trump pins woes in Russia probe on McCain

By HOPE YEN, CALVIN WOODWARD and ERIC TUCKER 45 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s slam on Sen. John McCain flips reality on its head when it comes to who gave veterans the option to see a private doctor at public expense. He also pins some of his woes in the Russia investigation on a distorted account of the late senator’s actions in the matter.

Trump overstates McCain’s role in aiding the FBI with a false chronology on when the senator provided a so-called “dossier” that detailed many salacious but unconfirmed details about Trump and his aides.

The president also got his history wrong on veterans.

“McCain didn’t get the job done for our great vets,” Trump said. “I got it done.”

Actually, McCain got it done.

Busted: NCAA bracket filled with tales of transgression

by EDDIE PELLS an hour ago

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The NCAA Selection Committee has spoken, seeding 64 teams for the tournament that starts Thursday. What if the Committee on Infractions had a say, too?

Records would still matter — but not the sort compiled during the regular season. Rap sheets, academic fraud, bad sportsmanship, terrible PR, good, old-fashioned bribes, the dreaded “lack of institutional control” — you could pretty much fill out an entire bracket simply listing what many of these teams have gotten wrong over the past months, years and decades.

Of course, March Madness, which tips off Thursday with 16 games, has a way of pushing all that bad news to the back burner.

“What sells sports are hype and hope, and you really can’t find a better example of both than the NCAA Tournament,” says marketing guru Joe Favorito.

But first, let’s take our medicine. Here’s a bracket-style review of the pain and malfeasance that some of the schools in this year’s March Madness bracket have inflicted on their sport, their fans and themselves.
