WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republicans on Tuesday defeated the “Green New Deal” resolution that called for tackling climate change by moving the United States off fossil fuels, while Democrats said the vote was a political stunt on an issue that will rise in importance.
The vote was 57 against the resolution in the 100-member chamber, with 43 Democrats voting “present.” Republicans won over Democratic Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema and one independent senator, Angus King, who usually votes with the Democrats.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top Democrat on tax policy in the U.S. House of Representatives said on Tuesday that he is determined to seek President Donald Trump’s tax returns, despite the political victory handed to Trump by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
“I’m committed to this. This is not just about one individual. This is a policy issue. And we think that there’s a test here of the law,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal told reporters. But he declined to say when he could take action to seek Trump’s returns.
Neal is the only House lawmaker authorized by federal law to request U.S. taxpayer records from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. His pending request for Trump’s returns is widely seen as a linchpin for Democratic efforts to investigate the president’s taxes and business dealings for potential conflicts of interest or violations of the Constitution.
Democrats, who have launched a number of probes against Trump since winning last year’s midterm election, suffered a blow over the weekend when the Justice Department announced that Mueller found no evidence that Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign took part in Russian election meddling. The finding has enhanced Trump’s political standing.

Mitch McConnell is going to great lengths to justify why people shouldn't see the special counsel's report.
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) doesn't want Americans to be able to read the Mueller report.
On Monday, he blocked Sen. Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) nonbinding resolution that called for Mueller's report to be made public. As Schumer said on Twitter, what are they trying to hide?
McConnell's not shy about making bad-faith arguments when it comes to the Mueller report. He believes that the public shouldn't get to see the report any time soon because the president had to wait two years for the investigation to complete and "it's not unreasonable to give the special counsel and the Justice Department just a little time to complete their review in a professional and responsible manner."
That argument might hold water but for the fact that Trump's attorney general, William Barr, only took 48 hours to review 22 months of work in order to determine that Trump should not be charged with obstruction of justice.

GOP congressman attacks poor people for wanting health care

Poor people who want health care are 'voting for a living instead of working for a living,' said Republican Rep. Ralph Abraham.
Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA) was caught on an audio recording attacking poor people who get health care coverage through the Medicaid program.
Poor people care more about "voting for a living instead of working for a living," the congressman said in audio captured at a March 19 fundraiser in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
"If they're on that program of the government — and it could be a state or a federal program — what are they going to do? They're going to vote to keep that program going," he added.
As participants paid $250 per plate for the luncheon, Abraham rambled on about Medicaid in response to a question from an attendee. At the same event, Abraham falsely claimed that the expansion of Medicaid to the state "mandated" that people drop their private insurance plans.

The Supreme Court has for decades avoided addressing partisan gerrymandering, concerned about about meddling too much in the inherently political process of drawing state legislative and congressional districts.
Their next chance to weigh in on the issue begins Tuesday, when oral arguments kick off in a trio of interrelated cases arguing that extreme partisan gerrymandering fatally undermines democracy.
In 2018, to the deep disappointment of voting rights activists, the court kicked cases from Wisconsin and Maryland back to the lower courts, citing standing and procedural concerns. Since then, the reform-curious Justice Anthony Kennedy has been replaced with staunchly conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
But advocates for reform remain cautiously optimistic that this time, things might turn out differently.

In New Book, Papadopoulos Claims He Was 'Duped' By FBI Into Guilty Plea

In a new book obtained by the Wall Street Journal, former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos is attempting to rewrite history.
In the book, “Deep State Target,” Papadopoulos reportedly outlines his interactions with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team of investigators and suggests he was “duped” by agents into admitting guilt for lying to the FBI, a charge that he served 14 days in prison for.
“I realize I misspoke to the FBI,” he reportedly wrote. “The ‘lie’ I was charged with … certainly wasn’t intentional. … I had to use those words and own them because those were the charges the prosecutors insisted on hitting me with. I am truly sorry I didn’t get the dates right when I talked to the FBI agents. Still, I was never told what my false claims were.”
Papadopoulos — whose drunken conversation with an Australian diplomat during the 2016 campaign helped spark the Russia probe — was charged and pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with a professor named Joseph Mifsud, who allegedly told him that the Russians had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton.

The stay is the latest example of Trump’s company doing business with foreign officials. Two attorneys general have sued Trump over the issue, accusing him of violating the Constitution.
The prime minister of Romania stayed at President Donald Trump’s hotel during her trip to Washington over the weekend. She is the first foreign government leader known to have booked a room at the property in more than a year.
The stay at the Trump International Hotel by Viorica Dancila, who is attending the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference, provides the latest piece of evidence that Trump’s company continues to do business with foreign officials. Such payments could violate the Constitution’s anti-corruption provisions, which prohibit the president from accepting gifts or “emoluments” from foreign governments.
Dancila was seen Friday night inside the hotel’s atrium surrounded by a group of about eight people after leaving the hotel’s BLT Prime restaurant. She made her way to one of the building’s elevators, which are operated with room keys of hotel guests. She was seen again on Sunday, entering an elevator shortly after 6 p.m. On Monday she tweeted a picture of herself meeting with Vice President Mike Pence at AIPAC.
Trump still owns the hotel through a trust from which he can draw money at any time. Trump’s lawyers have rejected the idea that a hotel visit from a foreign official can be construed as an emolument, saying instead that it is a “fair value exchange” not addressed in the Constitution. Trump faces several lawsuits over the emoluments issue, filed by the attorneys general of the District of Columbia and Maryland, Democratic lawmakers and a government watchdog.

She said a declaration that Trump has violated the clause and an injunction ordering him not to do so could also be an option.

Trump Admin Now Backs Judge's Ruling To Toss All Of Obamacare

Indicating a shift in position, the Trump administration announced Monday that it backs a judge’s ruling to toss the entire Affordable Care Act, a step forward in intensity from its old position that only certain portions of the law should be thrown out.
The ruling, from the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, is likely to be appealed to the Supreme Court anyway, according to a Monday Politico report.
More than 20 million Americans are covered by the ACA, and some of the Trump administration’s drug pricing reforms are dependent on the law.
House Democrats are reportedly livid and are calling the move “unconscionable.”

Pentagon Notifies Congress It's Tossing $1 Billion At New Border Construction

The Pentagon notified Congress on Monday evening that it had transferred $1 billion of its budget to the Department of Homeland Security for new border wall construction along the U.S.-Mexico border, CNN reported.
The money will go toward building 57 miles of new fencing, as well as other security measures along the Uma and El Paso portions of the border. The move was made as part of President Trump’s national emergency declaration made to diverge funds from other areas to build his pet-project border wall. The move was roundly criticized and rejected by both the House and the Senate, but Trump vetoed the measure meant to block the emergency declaration.
The transfer of funds sparked immediate uproar from Democrats, who sent a letter to acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan objecting to the transfer and expressing “serious concern” that the Defense Department was bending to “political interference,” according to CNN.

The President’s son, who was at the center of the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer, celebrated not getting indicted on Fox News on Monday evening.
Donald Trump Jr. said it “feels great” that special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe is over, which was, in part, looking into whether he worked with Russia to get dirt on his father’s opponent, Hillary Clinton. He then went on to claim that the attorney general’s assessment of the Mueller’s report shows that it was Democrats “colluding, not us.”
“It feels great because I was a big part of all of this going on,” he told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on Monday evening. “I’m the one that took the daily incoming, the nonsense. Now at the same time I’m also the person that was actually there, that was actually in the room. So I understand everything that went into it. I realized we didn’t do anything wrong. Certainly when you look at what the other side was doing, you realize it was them in fact colluding, not us.”
