Gillibrand paid $29,000 in federal taxes on $214,000 income

By ELANA SCHOR 45 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (KEER’-sten JIHL’-uh-brand) has released her tax returns for 2018, showing she paid $29,170 in federal taxes on an income of about $214,000.

The New York Democrat on Wednesday became the first presidential candidate to disclose the latest tax filing. Her income included her $167,000 Senate salary, a $50,000 book payment and a $3,000 capital gains loss.

Gillibrand’s move comes as many of her rivals for their party’s 2020 nomination to take on President Donald Trump have yet to share their own tax return data, even as Democrats continue to slam Trump for not releasing his returns during his 2016 run for president.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has released 10 years of her tax returns but not her 2018 filing. Other Democratic candidates have yet to share as much tax information.

UK lawmakers prepare to vote on alternatives to Brexit deal

Source: Associated Press

By DANICA KIRKA and JILL LAWLESS 23 minutes ago

LONDON (AP) — British lawmakers were preparing to vote Wednesday on multiple options for leaving the European Union as they sought to bring some clarity to the country’s tortured Brexit process.

In the wake of two overwhelming defeats for Prime Minister Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement with the EU, the House of Commons has taken control of the parliamentary timetable on Wednesday in the hope of finding a way through the impasse.

Lawmakers are holding a five-hour debate on a wide range of Brexit alternatives, after which they will be asked to vote for all of the options they could accept. The plan is for the most popular ideas to move to a second vote on Monday to find one option that can command a majority.

The debate comes two days after lawmakers took control of the parliamentary agenda away from the government amid alarm that Britain was heading toward a chaotic Brexit within weeks with no exit plan in place.

'Just shame them': NRA scheme to respond to mass shootings exposed

By Oliver Willis -
March 26, 2019

Secret video caught the NRA revealing its strategy to attack citizens who spoke out after mass shootings.

A secret recording of the NRA caught the gun extremist group advising activists to "shame" citizens demanding a response to mass shootings and bragging that they ghost write pro-gun op-eds for local officials after those events.

Al Jazeera made the recording of the NRA's callous and cold-blooded propaganda tactics as part of an undercover sting, which the news organization released on Tuesday.

A hidden recording caught the NRA advising One Nation, a far-right Australian group. The NRA was giving the Australian group guidance on how to fight efforts to enact gun safety laws.

"Just shame them to the whole idea," NRA public relations official Lars Dalseide said, discussing the rhetoric that should be used against citizens pushing gun laws after a shooting. He told them to say, "If your policy, isn't good enough to stand on itself, how dare you use their deaths to push that forward. How dare you stand on the graves of those children to put forward your political agenda?"

Republicans in Congress keep trying to throw innocent doctors in jail

By Emily Crockett -
March 26, 2019

It's both pointless and dangerous.

Republicans in Congress are trying yet again to push an unnecessary, dangerous bill that threatens doctors with jail time for no good reason.

Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) told reporters Monday that next week he plans to use a rare parliamentary procedure to force the Democratic-controlled House to vote on an abortion restriction that doesn't have enough votes to pass Congress — but that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy vows the GOP will push "again, and again, and again," just to try to make women's health supporters look bad.

The GOP-led Senate tried and failed to pass the same bill in February, and pushed it for the same cynical reasons as House Republicans.

"For all the Democrats who ran saying they were pro-life, this is going to be the true test," Scalise said — failing to mention that there are only a handful of Democrats in Congress left who both personally oppose abortion and are willing to vote to restrict it.

GOP senator's crackpot solution to climate change: 'Have some kids'

By Oliver Willis -
March 26, 2019

Republican Sen. Mike Lee says the solution to the serious problem of climate change is to 'fall in love' and 'have some kids.'

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) spent thirteen minutes on the Senate floor in a rambling, unfocused attack on efforts to combat climate change, leading up to the declaration that having "some kids" would solve one of America's most pressing issues.

The statement was made Tuesday as part of a show vote devised by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to attack the Green New Deal.

"The solution to climate change is not this unserious resolution, but the serious business of human flourishing," said Lee. "The solution to so many of our problems, at all times and in all places: fall in love, get married, and have some kids."

Lee made his remark while standing next to an enlarged photo of babies to emphasize his statement.

Poll: Trump's Numbers Haven't Improved Since Mueller Ended Investigation

By Cameron Joseph
March 26, 2019 4:56 pm

It’s still early, but President Trump might not get the polling bump he’s hoping for from the end of the Mueller investigation.

A new poll from Morning Consult finds that Trump’s approval rating is virtually identical to where it was last week: 42 percent approved of the job Trump is doing, and 55 percent disapproved.

The poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday, is just a snapshot during a period where voters were just getting their heads around Attorney General William Barr’s letter to Congress that Mueller had found Trump didn’t collude with Russia and left the question of obstruction open. Trump and Democrats are furiously fighting to characterize the letter’s findings, and the release of the actual Mueller report, if that occurs, could dramatically shake things up once again.

The Barr letter also doesn’t appear to have broken through in a major way with voters — at least not yet. Just 35 percent had heard “a lot” about Mueller’s findings, the poll found, numbers on par with those around Paul Manafort’s sentencing and significantly lower than those who knew much about his border emergency declaration or the college bribes scandal.

-snip-

That could change — it’s still early, and the complicated issue may take a while to bake in with voters. But right now the Barr letter appears to be more of a political Rorschach test than a game-changer — and Trump’s gleeful if inaccurate claims that he’s been “fully exonerated” don’t seem to be improving his standing with voters.

Hundreds of activists protest Florida lawmakers' secret immigration deal

"Our communities are being used as bargaining chips and it will have severe economic consequences."
Rebekah Entralgo
Mar 26, 2019, 5:07 pm

Roughly 300 immigration activists flooded the halls of the Florida state Capitol building in Tallahassee on Tuesday to protest a secret immigration deal that would fast-track a bill they say would impose a new form of family separation.

Senate Bill 168, and its sister legislation HB 527 in the House, would prevent municipalities from designating themselves as sanctuary cities — despite the fact that no sanctuary cities currently exist in the state of Florida. Nearly every municipality already shares information with federal immigration authorities, but the new bill would require local law enforcement to comply with federal requests to detain undocumented immigrants for potential deportation proceedings. Immigration activists worry that the bill will incentivize racial profiling and fracture the fragile trust between immigrant communities and local police.

For example, in Florida, getting caught driving without a license three times is a felony. Under SB 168, if an undocumented person with a clean criminal record gets pulled over by police, they would be held by local law enforcement on an ICE detainer, and they would then be transferred to an ICE detention facility and possibly deported.

“[My husband] was detained by immigration on February 20, he was deported on March 20, and now I’m alone with my two children,” an immigration activist named Lilli told the crowd at the Capitol. “This is why I don’t want this bill to pass, because more mothers are going to left on their own.”

Justices Weaponize Redistricting Reform Against Partisan Gerrymandering Foes

By Tierney Sneed
March 26, 2019 1:50 pm

Conservative justices on the Supreme Court and Republican lawyers love redistricting reform as an argument against the court reining in extreme partisan gerrymandering.

Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh on Tuesday both brought up the push in several states to create independent redistricting commissions and other measures to limit legislators from drawing extremely unfair maps.

Paul Clement — a former U.S. solicitor general in the George W. Bush administration representing North Carolina’s GOP legislature — also pointed to the movement as a reason for the justices not to wade into the question that they have avoided so long.

The justices were hearing on Tuesday two cases: the North Carolina case, Rucho v. Common Cause, challenging a GOP-drawn map, and a Maryland case, Lamone v Benisek , challenging a map drawn by Democrats. The cases asked the justices to consider whether the court should impose limits on extreme gerrymandering. In both cases, lawmakers said the aim of the maps were to draw districts that maximized the electoral advantage of the party in charge.

Second Wisconsin Judge Blocks Some Of Lame-Duck Laws Pushed Through By GOP

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Allegra Kirkland
March 26, 2019 4:48 pm

A second Wisconsin judge has blocked some of the lame-duck laws the GOP-controlled state legislature rammed through in December before the incoming Democratic attorney general and governor assumed office.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Tuesday that Dane County Judge Frank Remington threw out provisions requiring lawmakers to sign off on settling lawsuits handled by the attorney general and giving legislators the authority to permanently block state rules written by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ administration. The judge let other provisions of the law stand.

The ruling comes just five days after another Dane County judge, Richard Niess, handed down a sweeping ruling blocking the full slate of lame-duck laws aimed at curbing the power of Evers and Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul. No immediate action is required on Remington’s ruling because Niess’ ruling is already in effect.

Niess found that the lawmakers violated the state constitution in calling an extraordinary session at a time that wasn’t allowed, while Remington ruled that the unions who brought the suit before his bench were likely to prove that the laws violated the constitution’s separation-of-powers doctrine, per the Journal-Sentinel.

The newspaper reported that GOP lawmakers have already filed an appeal to Niess’ ruling and are in the process of filing one in this second case.

In the meantime, the state’s top Democrats are flexing their new authority. Evers last week ordered Kaul to withdraw from a multi-state lawsuit arguing that Obamacare is unconstitutional. The governor also removed 82 appointments that his predecessor, Republican Gov. Scott Walker, made during the lame-duck session.
