Native Voters in Nevada Head to Caucuses After Winning Voting Rights Fight

BY Mike Ludwig, Truthout
PUBLISHED
February 22, 2020

Nearly a decade before former Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada would become the powerful Democratic majority leader under President Obama, he won a tight reelection race against a Las Vegas Republican by a razor-thin margin of a few hundred votes. Elveda Martinez of the Walker River Paiute Tribe in western Nevada said Native voters were quick to remind Reid that their turnout was crucial to his win.

“And we always told him, ‘We put you in office,’” Martinez said in an interview with Truthout

Reid listened and used his powers in Washington to secure crucial fresh water resources for a nearby lake that feeds the Walker River. Martinez is a water resources coordinator for the Walker River Reservation, but she said members of small tribal communities often wear many hats. Martinez is also a well-known voting rights and ballot access activist who works every election season to get out the vote in her community. A solid turnout of Native voters can have a big impact on elections in a key swing state with a population of only 3 million people.

Trump claimed tariffs will pay for farmers' bailouts. He's wrong.

By Dan Desai Martin -February 21, 2020 3:46 PM

The bailout has so far cost U.S. taxpayers at least $28 billion.

Donald Trump on Friday continued to peddle a false narrative that tariffs levied against Chinese goods would pay for the billions of dollars in bailout money his administration has pledged to farmers hurt by his trade policies.

"IF OUR FORMALLY TARGETED FARMERS NEED ADDITIONAL AID UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THE TRADE DEALS WITH CHINA, MEXICO, CANADA AND OTHERS FULLY KICK IN," Trump tweeted, "THAT AID WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, PAID FOR OUT OF THE MASSIVE TARIFF MONEY COMING INTO THE USA!"

This is a lie.

In August, Politifact looked into the same claim — that tariffs levied against Chinese imports would pay for the farmer bailouts — and determined it was false.

Nevada Democrats look to avoid Iowa caucus mistakes

By Associated Press -February 22, 2020 7:00 AM

Party officials have taken measures to avoid chaos in Saturday's caucuses.

Nevada Democrats are hoping to avoid a repeat of the chaos that ensnared the Iowa caucuses, as voters gather across the Silver State on Saturday to make their presidential preferences known. Iowa's process cratered this month following a rushed effort by state Democrats to deploy a mobile app for caucus volunteers to report results. Democrats in Nevada were going to use the same app developer as Iowa did, but quickly sidelined those plans. They will still be relying to some extent on technology to assist in counting and reporting results, though, and like Iowa, they will have paper backups.

Questions and answers about Nevada's preparations:

Comedy returns to the White House correspondents' dinner

By Associated Press -February 22, 2020 8:00 AM

'Saturday Night Live' cast member Kenan Thompson and 'Patriot Act' host Hasan Minhaj will headline the annual dinner.

Comedians are making their return to the White House Correspondents' Dinner after last year's hiatus.

Kenan Thompson of "Saturday Night Live" and Hasan Minhaj of Netflix's "Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj" will headline this year's dinner, which takes place April 25.

Presidents and first ladies have traditionally attended the dinner, which serves as a celebration of the First Amendment as well as a fundraiser for college scholarships. Reporting awards are given out as well.

But Donald Trump has skipped the dinner since taking office and instead has elected to hold campaign rallies. Just four days before last year's dinner, the White House announced that administration officials would be joining Trump in boycotting the dinner.

The White House declined to comment about whether Trump would attend this year.

News you missed: North Carolina voters score major victory

By Dan Desai Martin -February 21, 2020 5:00 PM

Also this week, New Mexico pledged to invest $300 million for early childhood education, and Kentucky announced a record number of registered voters.

This week, both North Carolina and Florida saw victories for voting rights, and the University of Southern California announced a plan to help tackle student debt for low-income students.

Read on to see what else flew under the radar this week.

North Carolina's Court of Appeals blocked a GOP-backed voter ID law on Tuesday after determining it was written with "an intention to target African-American voters," Reuters reported.

The unanimous ruling means the voter ID law is unlikely to be enforced for the 2020 election, according to Stephen Wolf, a voting rights expert with Daily Kos Elections.

In November, North Carolina will see a competitive Senate race between first-term Republican Sen. Thom Tillis and his likely Democratic opponent, former state Sen. Cal Cunningham, as well as a competitive race for governor, with Democrat Roy Cooper facing reelection. The state will also be a presidential battleground.

Trump's NSC is ignoring intelligence reports and basing policy on handouts of Trump's tweets: report

Published 1 min ago on February 22, 2020
By Tom Boggioni

According to a report from the New York Times, members of the National Security Council under Donald Trump no longer uses their extensive knowledge of international relations, politics, and history to formulate foreign policy security proposals for the president’s review — and are instead using the president’s tweets to make policy based upon his desires and social media proclamations.

The report begins with noting that council members are often handed printouts of the president’s tweets when they convene and are expected to use his words as their guide to formulate proposals that will likely find favor with the president.

“When President Trump’s national security adviser, Robert C. O’Brien, convenes meetings with top National Security Council officials at the White House, he sometimes opens by distributing printouts of Mr. Trump’s latest tweets on the subject at hand,” the report begins. “The gesture amounts to an implicit challenge for those present. Their job is to find ways of justifying, enacting or explaining Mr. Trump’s policy, not to advise the president on what it should be.”

As the report points out, this is a reversal of how the national security apparatus is supposed to work where members of the council previously gave advice to the president on national security decisions based upon department analysis.

Trump is doing Putin's bidding by 'spreading misinformation' about new Russian election

meddling report: Ex-NSC official

Published 2 hours ago on February 22, 2020

By Tom Boggioni

Appearing on CNN on Saturday morning, former National Security Council official Samantha Vinograd stated that Donald Trump attacks on a new U.S. intelligence report showing ten Russians are already meddling in the 2020 election is exactly what Russian President Vladimir Putin would want him to do.

Speaking with hosts Victor Blackwell and Christi Paul, Vinograd accused Trump of spreading misinformation because it helps his re-election chances.

“The key question, though, is on the misinformation and disinformation front,” Vinobrad explained. “Christi, you don’t fight a Russian campaign with misinformation about the campaign. President Trump calling it a Democratic hoax is exactly what Putin is hoping for from this president.”

This intelligence community assessment builds on a 2016 assessment that was high confidence from the intelligence community,” she continued. “That means that the FBI, CIA, and NSA who worked on that 2016 high confidence assessment agreed on the conclusion that president trump is the preferred candidate. Now in 2020 there was another coordinated assessment from the intelligence community which was briefed to Congress and President Trump is spreading misinformation about that assessment.”
