CNN's Jim Acosta to Trump: Network's Record is 'A Lot Better Than Yours'

CNN’s Chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta and President Donald Trump are sparring again.

During a press conference in New Delhi, Acosta pressed back on the President’s assertion that CNN had to walk back a recent report from several news organizations on Russia trying to interfere in the 2020 election. Acosta asked Trump if he would repudiate foreign interference in that process..

“First of all, I want no help from any country, and I haven’t been given help from any country,” Trump said. “And if you see what CNN, your wonderful network, said, I guess they apologized in a way for — didn’t they apologize for the fact that they said certain things that weren’t true? Tell me, what was their apology yesterday? What did they say?”

“Mr. President, I think our record on delivering the truth is a lot better than yours sometimes,” Acosta said.

Acosta and Trump have tangled in the recent past. Trump has often appeared to take delight in using Acosta’s questions to launch broadsides against CNN. In 2018, Trump called Acosta “a rude terrible person” after Acosta asked him about rhetoric regarding immigration. The White House would later suspend Acosta’s security credentials, resulting in a short-lived court battle that resulted in Acosta getting his pass returned.

The two continued to spar in New Delhi.

Trump Claims Purging Officials Who Are 'Disloyal' To Him Is Good For America

President Donald Trump wants America to know that his plans to remove government officials deemed insufficiently loyal to him is actually for the country’s own good.

When a reporter asked Trump about the purge during a press conference in New Delhi, India, on Tuesday, the President initially downplayed the number of people he felt deserved to be kicked out.

“I don’t think it’s a big problem,” Trump said. “I don’t think it’s very many people.”

He brought up the “very sad situation” with the “fake” whistleblower who reported Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which exposed Trump’s pressure campaign on Ukraine and led to his impeachment.

Landmark second world war ceremony in Moscow poses dilemma for UK and US

Russian ceremonies in May to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the second world war are posing an increasingly urgent dilemma for western capitals on whether to go – and who to send.

Discussions have been under way for some weeks between UK and US officials on a coordinated response. But the decision is complicated by the unpredictability of Donald Trump, and by Emmanuel Macron’s decision to accept Vladimir Putin’s invitation to the 9 May victory parade as part of his diplomatic overture to Moscow, without consulting Nato allies.

For the US, UK and other western powers, failure to attend would underline western divisions and run the risk of appearing to lack respect for the shared sacrifices of defeating Nazism.

On the other hand, attendance at the grandiose military parade planned in Moscow to mark the occasion could involve leaders acquiescing in continuing Russian military adventurism, and possibly witnessing the march-past of units involved in the bombardment of civilians in Syria, or the occupation of Crimea and military operations in the Donbas region.

Trump lashes out at liberal supreme court justices and demands recusals

Even as the US justice system faces a crisis of credibility because of the Trump administration’s handling of federal cases, Donald Trump has taken the unusual step of attacking two supreme court justices on Twitter and in remarks to the press.

In a dissent last week, justice Sonia Sotomayor criticized the Trump administration’s frequent appeals to the supreme court to intervene in lower-court decisions, and the court’s willingness to side with such requests.

On Twitter, responding to a segment on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle, Trump unleashed a tirade against Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has criticized the president in the past.

“This is a terrible thing to say,” Trump tweeted. “Trying to ‘shame’ some into voting her way? She never criticized Justice Ginsberg when she called me a ‘faker’. Both should recuse themselves on all Trump, or Trump related, matters!

“While ‘elections have consequences’” – a reference to his two supreme court appointments since winning the White House, both reliable conservatives – “I only ask for fairness, especially when it comes to decisions made by the United States supreme court!”

At a press conference in India on Tuesday, Trump repeated his complaint.

Biggest conservative conference to feature 'play' about FBI agents Trump loves to mock

By Emily Singer -February 24, 2020 6:30 PM

The Conservative Political Action Conference will have a new form of red meat for its attendees this year.

Attendees of the Conservative Political Action Conference will have a new form of entertainment at the annual gathering this week: a showing of a "play" about two FBI officials who Donald Trump and Republicans wrongly claim tainted the Russia investigation.

On Thursday, CPAC will put on a performance of "FBI Lovebirds: UnderCovers," in which a cast of D-list actors will read the text messages of former FBI officials Lisa Page and Peter Strzok. Page and Strzok were having an affair during the FBI's probe into the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia.

Fueled by pro-Trump Fox News hosts, Republicans have taken the text messages and run with them, claiming they showed an unfair bias against Trump within the FBI — a bogus claim. Trump even mimicked Page having an orgasm on stage at one of his recent rallies — an action that sparked Page to speak publicly about Trump's attacks on her.

Dean Cain, who played Superman on television in the 1990s, plays Strzok, while Kristy Swanson, who played Buffy in the 1992 film "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," plays Page.

Susan Collins is mad about 'dark money' ads. But she's the reason they're legal.

By Josh Israel -February 24, 2020 4:34 PM

Collins was the deciding vote in 2010 against the DISCLOSE Act, which would have required transparency for political ads.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) reportedly complained Saturday about dark money advertisements being run against her. But a decade ago, Collins was the deciding vote against a bill that would have brought transparency to political ads like the ones she now abhors.

According to a report in the Lewiston Sun Journal, Collins "griped that she’s been assailed with dark money advertising that reaches 'new depths of falsehood.'" In her closed-door remarks to attendees at the Androscoggin Republican Committee's annual Lincoln Day dinner, she objected specifically to ads accusing her of cutting Medicare.

But back in 2010, following the Supreme Court's controversial Citizens United ruling, Congress considered legislation to require tax-exempt organizations that run ads supporting (or opposing) political candidates publicly identify contributors who funded the ads. The Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections Act — with the acronym DISCLOSE — passed the House of Representatives that May.

When the Senate voted on its version of the bill two months later, it ran into a Republican filibuster. Collins opposed the bill, calling it "another example of election year politics" and complaining that it would "provide a clear and unfair advantage to unions" who could spend their treasury funds on ads without disclosing their members.

'They won't survive': Trump gas wells would block pronghorn migration route

Conservation groups are fighting the creation of 3,500 gas wells in Wyoming that threaten a 170-mile path

The Path of the Pronghorn is a 170-mile migration route that the antelope-like creatures have traveled annually for 6,000 years. It is one of North America’s last remaining long-distance terrestrial migration corridors.

And it is at risk. This week conservation groups filed a legal petition challenging the Trump administration’s plan to allow 3,500 new gas wells in south-western Wyoming that would block the route.

The petition alleges that the government approved the wells without properly analyzing the potential harm to pronghorn and the greater sage grouse, a chicken-like bird that requires vast, intact landscapes for habitat, from well pads, roads, pipelines and other infrastructure. The vast frack-field expansion would prevent access to winter ranges that pronghorn need to survive.

Migration memory is passed from parent to offspring among ungulates, said the conservationist Linda Baker, the director of the Upper Green River Alliance. “If we cut off their migration route, that memory is lost and not likely to be regained in the life of a pronghorn. This area is a high cold desert, so they survive on sagebrush. If they can’t get to traditional winter ranges on these pathways, they won’t survive.”

HR McMaster to publish book that may pose headaches for Trump

Donald Trump is trying to stop the publication of a book by his third national security adviser, John Bolton, but he will soon have to contend with a volume published by his second.

Lt Gen HR McMaster will publish Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World, on 28 April.

Bolton’s book, The Room Where It Happened, is reported to contain details of events central to the president’s impeachment over his approaches to Ukraine, which he survived after acquittal in the Senate.

It is due for publication in March but Trump is reportedly trying to block it until at least after November’s election.

Informants named in WikiLeaks files disappeared, Assange hearing told

Source: The Guardian

Secret sources who had supplied information to the US government “disappeared” after they were put at risk of death or torture by WikiLeaks’s release of classified documents, the first day of Julian Assange’s extradition hearing has been told.

James Lewis QC opened the US case for the extradition of the WikiLeaks founder from the UK at Woolwich crown court. Lewis referred to a range of sources in states including Iraq, Afghanistan and China.

“The US is aware of sources, whose unredacted names and other identifying information was contained in classified documents published by WikiLeaks, who subsequently disappeared, although the US can’t prove at this point that their disappearance was the result of being outed by WikiLeaks,” he told the court in south-east London.

By disseminating material in an unredacted form, Lewis said Assange knowingly put human rights activists, dissidents, journalists and their families at risk of serious harm in states run by oppressive regimes.

Assange, 48, is wanted in the US to face 18 charges of attempted hacking and breaches of the Espionage Act. They relate to the publication a decade ago of hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables and files covering areas including US activities in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Australian, who could face a 175-year prison sentence if found guilty, is accused of working with the former US army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to leak classified documents.

Julian Assange lawyer tells court: After pardon fell through, Trump administration resorted to 'exto

Source: Raw Story

By David Edwards

An attorney for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange accused the Trump administration of extortion in a London court on Monday.

The WikiLeaks attorney appeared at Woolwich Crown Court along with U.S. prosecutors, who argued that Assange should be extradited the United States, where he faces 18 charges and up to 175 years in jail.

Attorneys for Assange previously told the court that former Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) tried to broker a pardon deal between the White House and Assange if he would agree to say that Russia was not the source of hacked Democratic Party emails.

Defense attorney Edwards Fitzgerald said on Monday that Rohrabacher had called the pardon offer a “win-win.”
