GOP leader: Trump's retaliation against witness was 'appropriate'

By Josh Israel -February 11, 2020 3:15 PM

Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy doesn't think it's a problem that Trump had an impeachment witness removed from his post last week.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy defended Donald Trump's retaliation against impeachment witnesses.

McCarthy (R-CA) was asked at a press conference whether Trump had learned any lesson from the impeachment and whether it was appropriate that he removed former Ambassador Gordon Sondland and Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council, from their posts on Friday.

McCarthy first tried to ignore the question, responding with a diatribe against House Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff, who he said put the country through a "nightmare."

Pressed to answer the question of why it was "appropriate for the president to take the action that he did," McCarthy argued that because Vindman remains on the federal payroll, he was not really removed from his position.

Republicans think tampons need to be taxed to limit women from buying too many

By Emily Singer -February 11, 2020 3:58 PM

Some Tennessee lawmakers are worried that women would abuse the tax-free status of feminine hygiene products.

Republican lawmakers in Tennessee are raising objections to a proposal that would add feminine hygiene products to the list of items that can be purchased during the state's annual sales-tax holiday, the Associated Press reported.

According to the AP, the GOP lawmakers worried that women would abuse the law and purchase too many feminine hygiene products during the pause on state sales tax on some items — including computers and clothing. The pause lasts only one weekend, starting on the last Friday of July, the AP reported.

"I would think since it's a sales tax holiday, there's really no limit on the number of items anybody can purchase," Republican state Sen. Joey Hensley said during a debate on the proposal on Tuesday, according to the AP. "I don't know how you would limit the number of items someone could purchase."

Eliminating the so-called "tampon tax" has been a growing movement in states across the country.

Yep this dude and he is a dude and others are more concerned about tampons and that cost, while in his state there is presently a sitting US Senator, that voted to help enable a CON man to commit crimes against the Constitution and attack the same people in the state that are on disability.....................and to top it all off he has penguins screaming in his ear.................even if it is a picture...............

GOP budget chair dismisses Trump's plan as 'just a list of suggestions'

By Josh Israel -February 10, 2020 5:15 PM

Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi noted the 'power of the purse rests with Congress.'

A key Senate Republican is already dismissing Donald Trump's proposed fiscal year 2021 budget, hours after it was released.

The $4.8 trillion proposal has so far received bipartisan criticism for its cuts to the social safety net and other major programs and for its massive increases to the national debt.

Republican Sen. Mike Enzi (WY), chair of the Senate Budget Committee, specifically said in a statement Monday that Trump's proposal will likely go nowhere, waving off his wishlist items as merely "suggestions."

Presidents' budgets are a reflection of Administration priorities, but in the end, they are just a list of suggestions, as the power of the purse rests with Congress," Enzi wrote. "Bipartisan consensus will be necessary to bring our debt and deficits under control. I hope to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put our country on a more sustainable fiscal course."

Though Trump ran on promises of balanced budgets and elimination of the entire national debt by 2024, the deficit has grown to $1 trillion annually and the national debt is at a historic high. A senior administration official told Fox Business on Sunday that even if the economy stays strong, this budget proposal will not lead to a balanced budget until 2035.

Nevada Dem Caucus Will Use Paper Ballots For Early Voting After Abandoning App

By Cristina Cabrera

February 11, 2020 10:52 a.m.

The Nevada Democratic Party (NDP) will use paper ballots for early voting in its caucuses after Iowa Democrats’ attempt to use a specialized caucus data-gathering app crashed and burned last week.

According to a memo published by the Nevada Independent on Tuesday, the early voter will check in using Google Forms on an iPad (and a paper voter card as a backup) at a voting site in their county, then they will fill out a paper ballot that will be scanned at the end of each day to be counted with the results of their precinct’s caucus on Feb 22.

The Google Form will have a URL that will be protected by “a series of security mechanisms,” in the Independent’s words, to prevent hacking.

NDP chair William McCurdy II already promised last week that the party would not use the same glitchy app, created by Shadow Inc., on Caucus Day that Iowa had used.

Ratfu-ery in NH: Trump Camp Hoped Secret Service Lockdown Would Screw Dems

By Kate Riga

Oops, they said the quiet part loud again.

President Donald Trump’s campaign advisers are saying openly that his rally in New Hampshire Monday night wasn’t just counterprogramming to the Democratic primary in the key swing state.

They also hoped that the Secret Service restrictions accompanying his Manchester rally would clog up the state’s biggest city on the eve of the Democratic primary, hampering candidates and voters from getting around.

Here’s what unnamed campaign officials confessed to the Associated Press:

Advisers hoped that Secret Service moves in downtown Manchester to secure the area for the president’s arrival would also make it harder for Democratic candidates and their supporters to transverse the state’s largest city in the hours before the primary’s first votes are cast, according to Trump campaign officials not authorized to discuss internal deliberations publicly.

The side benefit of logistical sabotage came as Trump tried to take the wind out of Democrats’ sails hours before the first votes were cast with a ticketed campaign event billed as a “Keep America Great Rally.”

We need trucks driving around whenever this a**hole shows up that says your a CON--MAN.....................that is all you are trump a CON-MAN...........and then say U lost ( fill in the blank state ) in the 2016 primary like NH............and then watch him blow a gasket.....................

Critics warn Trump is gearing up to pardon Roger Stone, Mike Flynn and Paul Manafort after dead of

night tweet-bashing his DOJ

Written by David Badash / The New Civil Rights Movement February 11, 2020

Is President Donald Trump paving the way to pardon his best buddies, the former campaign advisors who helped him win the White House?

The answer to that question may be in a tweet Trump posted in the dead of night. Clearly something was bothering him at 1:48 AM, nearly an hour after he had returned to the White House from his short New Hampshire MAGA rally.

“This is a horrible and very unfair situation. The real crimes were on the other side, as nothing happens to them. Cannot allow this miscarriage of justice!” Trump tweeted, responding to a tweet from a reporter for a far right wing website lamenting the 7 to 9 year sentence federal prosecutors are asking a judge impose on Roger Stone.

Barr declares war against sanctuary cities. Expert says he's 'targeting' Democratic jurisdictions

Written by David Badash / The New Civil Rights Movement
February 11, 2020

Attorney General Bill Barr has launched an all-out attack against sanctuary cities, claiming they are endangering national security. The AG says he will allow the Dept. of Homeland Security to issue “federal subpoenas to access information about criminal aliens in the custody of uncooperative jurisdictions,” Fox News reports.

Barr says the DOJ is targeting the State of New Jersey and King County, Washington, and will be “reviewing the practices, policies, and laws of other jurisdictions across the country. This includes assessing whether jurisdictions are complying with our criminal laws, in particular the criminal statute that prohibits the harboring or shielding of aliens in the United States.”

In addition to targeting certain state and local governments, Barr appears to be making the targeting personal, declaring, “we are meticulously reviewing the actions of certain district attorneys who have adopted policies of charging foreign nationals with lesser offenses for the express purpose of avoiding the federal immigration consequences of those nationals’ criminal conduct. In pursuing their personal ambitions and misguided notions of equal justice, these district attorneys are systematically violating the rule of law and may even be unlawfully discriminating against American citizens.”

Fox News calls the program “a ‘significant escalation’ against left-wing local and state governments that obstruct the ‘lawful functioning of our nation’s immigration system.’”

'He's a con man': MSNBC's Chris Hayes says Donald Trump is much weaker than he seems

Published 10 hours ago on February 10, 2020
By Cody Fenwick, AlterNet

Since President Donald Trump’s acquittal in the Senate last week, many political commentators have suggested that his electoral fortunes are rising while the Democrats’ 2020 prospects are dimming. But as MSNBC’s Chris Hayes argued Monday night, these claims have been greatly exaggerated.

While Trump’s poll numbers have ticked up slightly in recent days, it’s far from a dramatic bounce — and he still remains unpopular nationwide.

But the illusion that Trump is riding high, Hayes argued, is actually part of his strategy to get re-elected.

“The president is many things: He’s a bigot, he is a liar, he’s a narcissist but above all else,” Hayes said, “he has been a con man.”

And Democrats shouldn’t fall for it.

GOP meeting in effort to save embattled senators from impeachment acquittal fallout: report

Published 5 mins ago on February 8, 2020

By Matthew Chapman

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says he believes that the impeachment trial has galvanized Republican voters — and furthermore, suggested, “In the end it’s not likely to have much of an impact on any of the races, the presidential or the Senate races.”

But according to the Washington Post, he is organizing a weekend retreat for GOP senators and donors for “popsicles and prosecco by the pool” at the Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, Florida, to assess how impeachment has affected their chances of keeping the majority.

With the exception of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), all Senate Republicans joined together to acquit President Donald Trump of both articles of impeachment. This includes vulnerable Republicans representing competitive states in elections this year, like Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Cory Gardner (R-UT), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Martha McSally (R-AZ), and Joni Ernst (R-IA).

Senate Democrats have no plans to let their voters forget these votes.

“Armed with polling showing voters largely supported an expanded trial, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is trying to raise money for key challengers to Republican incumbents,” wrote reporter Paul Kane. “‘We know you’re angry,’ the DSCC began its Friday missive.”
