American cruise passengers quarantined at US military bases

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — More than 300 American cruise ship passengers, including 14 who tested positive for coronavirus, were being quarantined at military bases in California and Texas on Monday after arriving from Japan on charter flights overnight.

One plane carrying cruise passengers touched down at Travis Air Force Base in Northern California just before midnight Sunday, while another arrived at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas early Monday. The passengers will remain at the bases for two weeks.

Japan’s Defense Minister Taro Kono tweeted earlier that Japanese troops helped transport 340 U.S. passengers on 14 buses from Yokohama port to Tokyo’s Haneda airport. About 380 Americans were on the cruise ship.

The U.S. said it arranged for the evacuation because people on the Diamond Princess were at a high risk of exposure to the new virus that’s been spreading in Asia. For the departing Americans, the evacuation cuts short a 14-day quarantine that began aboard the cruise ship Feb. 5.

Leaked data shows China's Uighurs detained due to religion

Beijing (AP) — For decades, the Uighur imam was a bedrock of his farming community in China’s far west. On Fridays, he preached Islam as a religion of peace. On Sundays, he treated the sick with free herbal medicine. In the winter, he bought coal for the poor.

But as a Chinese government mass detention campaign engulfed Memtimin Emer’s native Xinjiang region three years ago, the elderly imam was swept up and locked away, along with all three of his sons living in China.

Now, a newly revealed database exposes in extraordinary detail the main reasons for the detentions of Emer, his three sons, and hundreds of others in Karakax County: their religion and their family ties.

The database obtained by The Associated Press profiles the internment of 311 individuals with relatives abroad and lists information on more than 2,000 of their relatives, neighbors and friends. Each entry includes the detainee’s name, address, national identity number, detention date and location, along with a detailed dossier on their family, religious and neighborhood background, the reason for detention, and a decision on whether or not to release them. Issued within the past year, the documents do not indicate which government department compiled them or for whom.

AP FACT CHECK: Trump's exaggerations on Roger Stone sentence

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is misrepresenting the Justice Department’s handling of the legal case of his confidant, Roger Stone.

He’s suggesting rampant bias in the department’s initial recommendation to a federal court that Stone be sentenced between seven and nine years in prison, claiming that all four prosecutors are former members of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia team. That’s not true.

Trump also says the proposed sentence was put forth in secret. He’s wrong on that, too.

The president’s exaggerations came in an extraordinary week in which Justice Department leaders overruled Stone’s prosecutors following a tweet complaint by Trump and lowered the amount of recommended prison time. Attorney General William Barr nevertheless publicly scolded Trump, saying the president’s tweets were making it “impossible” for him to do his job.

Meanwhile, Trump spread a variety of distortions at a New Hampshire rally, including about the border wall and voter fraud, and still more in other venues. The release of his proposed budget prompted Democrats to wrongly accuse him of undermining Medicare.

On his HBO season opener Sunday, John Oliver had some special thoughts for Senator Susan Collins. Playing a clip where she insisted that Donald Trump would learn a lesson from being impeached, John Oliver blasted her:

JOHN OLIVER: What are you talking about, Susan? Trump never learns his lesson! This is a man whose first-born child was Donald Trump Jr., and he kept having children!
Then the host turned to the Roger Stone trial, and Trump's tweet (yeah) that the Stone recommended sentence of 7-9 years was a "miscarriage of justice."

OLIVER: “Was it really a miscarriage of justice, though? Because, bear in mind that Stone was found guilty on seven counts, the sentencing was within established federal guidelines.
Plus, look at him!

I know you’re not supposed to profile people, but look at him! Look at him!

His dress code is ‘business scoundrel!’ He looks like a mannequin at a department store for Dick Tracy villains! He looks like a guy whose day planner just says ‘Frame Roger Rabbit!’ Look at him!

Whatever people think, the judge is the one who decides on the sentence, and there is an appeal process in place for Stone. The way the U.S. justice system works depends more on what people’s skin color is, how much money you have, and whether the judge has already had lunch.

Ted Cruz Can't Believe A Lawmaker Is Trying To Legislate Away A Man's Reproductive Rights

A law requiring vasectomies? Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) will not stand for this blatant violation of a (male) person’s bodily autonomy!

On Sunday, Cruz tweeted an article from a conservative news site about Alabama state Rep. Rolanda Hollis’ (D) bill requiring men to undergo vasectomies at the age of 50 or after the birth of their third child.

“Yikes. A government big enough to give you everything is big enough to take everything…literally!” Cruz, a staunch opponent of abortion rights, wrote.

The Republican has advocated for a full ban on abortion with no exceptions, stripping funding for Planned Parenthood, and allowing companies to deny birth control coverage.

Under HB238, introduced by Hollis on Thursday, men would be legally required to undergo a vasectomy procedure “at his own expense” once he turns 50 or has a third child, “whichever comes first.”

“Under existing law, there are no restrictions on the reproductive rights of men,” Hollis wrote in the bill’s synopsis.

Trump 'spiritual adviser' tells followers to skip paying electric bills so they can send her church

Paula White, a prosperity gospel minister who serves as President Donald Trump’s “spiritual adviser,” apparently believes her followers should live in the dark to help keep the lights on at her church.

A lengthy report on White by Mother Jones reveals that the Trump-loving preacher recently told followers at her Supernatural Ministry School in Miami that they could secure God’s favor by sending her church as much money as possible — even if that meant skipping their monthly electric bills.

In particular, White said that followers who send their money to Florida Power and Light (FPL) every month instead of giving it to her church are treating the electric company better than they treat God.

“Instead of writing [that check] to the house of God as I’m instructed to, then what I’m saying spiritually is, ‘FPL, I have now established a spiritual law that put you first,'” White explained to her flock. “So, FPL, save my family, FPL, deliver my drug addicted son. FPL, kill this cancer that doctors say is in my body.”

Boris Johnson official said that Black Americans aren't as smart as white Americans

On Monday, The Daily Beast reported on a massive scandal enveloping the administration of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, surrounding the appointment of Andrew Sabisky to an advisory position.

Sabisky, a 27-year-old who received the appointment days ago after answering an advertisement from Johnson aide Dominic Cummings, apparently wrote in an old blog post that Black Americans are significantly less intelligent than white Americans.

Worse still, a deputy official spokesperson for Johnson refused to say on Monday whether Sabisky would be fired, or even whether Johnson agrees with his views — only stating that “his views are well documented.”

And well documented they are.

“If the mean black American IQ is (best estimate based on a century’s worth of data) around 85, as compared to a mean white American IQ of 100, then if IQ is normally distributed, you will see a far greater percentage of blacks than whites in the range of IQs 75 or below, at which point we are close to the typical boundary for mild mental retardation,” wrote Sabisky in the post. None of this is backed by any scientific evidence.
