Significant regulatory delays on 737 MAX grounding could force Boeing to halt production: letter

Source: Reuters

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Significant additional regulatory requirements or delays in returning the 737 MAX to commercial service could cause Boeing Co (BA.N) to cut or temporarily halt 737 MAX production, the U.S. planemaker said in a letter seen by Reuters on Thursday.

The U.S. planemaker said it does not expect 737 MAX order cancellations due to the grounding of its best-selling single-aisle jet after deadly crashes to have a material impact on revenues or earnings because of the size of 737 order backlog and management’s ability to mitigate potential impacts by shifting planned customer delivery dates, Boeing said in the letter, dated October 18.

Republicans win in effort to limit student vote ahead of key 2020 races

‘They are kids voting liberal,’ a New Hampshire Republican said in 2011 as legal battle over student voting in the state continues

Maggie Flaherty grew up in a small town in California, but after she moved to New Hampshire to attend Dartmouth College, she registered to vote in the state where she would be spending at least four years.

Now she is embroiled in a fight against Republicans in the state that is being watched across the country.

Flaherty and a fellow student are challenging a Republican-backed law that is making it harder for many out-of-state students and other temporary residents to cast a ballot in a state with outsized national influence.

The lawsuit has been endorsed by the Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren and other Democratic presidential hopefuls. But last week, Flaherty and her colleague Caroline Casey hit another obstacle when the US district judge Joseph LaPlante denied a request to block the law just months before the primary elections.

New Hampshire is a small swing state where both local and state-wide races can be decided by razor-thin margins. Donald Trump lost the state to Hillary Clinton by just 2,736 votes in 2016. The same year, Maggie Hassan, also a Democrat, defeated Kelly Ayotte for a Senate seat by just 1,017 votes. The Democratic primary in February and general election in November are expected to be closely fought.

Democrats crippled their own impeachment effort with a rushed timeline: columnist

Published 1 min ago

By Matthew Chapman

House Democrats made a conscious decision to keep impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump as short and efficient as possible. On one hand, they had sensible reasons for wanting to do so — they were concerned that a protracted impeachment battle that drags into the 2020 election would lose engagement with the American people and draw criticism for attempting to interfere with the election.

But Thursday, NBC News analyst Kurt Bardella argued that Democrats may also have caused problems for themselves by making the impeachment process too short and setting arbitrary deadlines.

“From the start of the impeachment investigation, Democrats put themselves at a disadvantage by making it known they wanted to conclude the entire process by the end of the year,” wrote Bardella. “Some Democrats were reportedly concerned about the impeachment process stretching into the presidential primary season, prompting recent headlines like, ‘Dems sprint to the impeachment finish line.’ Speaker Nancy Pelosi, could, of course, take more time if needed. But even the perception of this timeline gives Trump the chance to effectively run out the clock.”

Massive leak of data reveals new money-hiding secrets of superrich -- and this is 'only the beginning

By Common Dreams

A massive trove of documents, data, and recorded phone calls showing how British company Formations House works to hide money for the superrich is being reported on by journalists all over the world, with the first stories dropping at midnight on Wednesday.

The reporting is being done under the name “29 Leaks,” a reference to Formations House’s original address at 29 Harley Street in London. The data was leaked to the group Distributed Denial of Secrets over the summer.

“It takes a concerted effort from a large number of people to make substantive headway on an investigation like this, in which a large amount of data needs to be quickly processed and examined,” Claire Peters, executive director of the Pursuance Project, told Unicorn Riot on Tuesday.

Peters and Pursuance Project outreach director Annalise Burkhart led a team of reporters from around the world uncovering and detailing the information stored in the huge, roughly 100 GB-sized trove of data.

Trump's former mistress is taking on Fox News for accusing her of extortion

Published 11 mins ago

By Sky Palma

According to a lawsuit filed against Fox News by a former Playboy model who says she had an affair with Donald Trump before he was president, network host Tucker Carlson falsely accused her of extortion by claiming she “approached Donald Trump and threatened to ruin his career and humiliate his family if he doesn’t give them money,” The New York Times reports.

“Now that sounds like a classic case of extortion,” Carlson said during his show on Dec. 10, 2018. “Yet for whatever reason, Trump caves to it, and he directs Michael Cohen to pay the ransom. Now, more than two years later, Trump is a felon for doing this. It doesn’t seem to make any sense.”

Karen McDougal’s lawsuit, which was filed in a New York state court, claims she never threatened Trump and is asking for damages against the network for harming her reputation. Although she doesn’t name Carlson as a defendant, she says the network is responsible for his comments.

Impeachment watch: Trump says asking Ukraine to investigate Biden was good for US

By Emily Singer -
December 5, 2019 9:49 AM

Trump is now saying his demand that Ukraine investigate the former vice president was for the good of the American people, not himself.

Donald Trump has moved on to a new defense as he tries to ward off what looks like inevitable impeachment charges: He claims his demand for an investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden was actually for the greater good, not his own political benefit.

"When I said, in my phone call to the President of Ukraine, 'I would like you to do US a favor though because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it.' With the word 'us' I am referring to the United States, our Country," Trump tweeted Wednesday night. "I then went on to say that 'I would like to have the Attorney General (of the United States) call you or your people.....' This, based on what I have seen, is their big point - and it is no point at a all (except for a big win for me!). The Democrats should apologize to the American people!"

However, Republicans never sought an investigation into Biden when Biden was vice president, nor when Republicans controlled the House, Senate, and White House for the first two year's of Trump's tenure.

North Korea threatens to start calling Trump names again

By Associated Press -
December 5, 2019 10:15 AM

Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un appear to no longer be on friendly terms.

North Korea threatened Thursday to resume insults of Donald Trump and consider him a “dotard” if he keeps using words that provoke the North.

Choe Son Hui, the first vice foreign minister, issued the warning days after Trump spoke of a possible military option toward the North and revived his “rocket man” nickname for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The development comes as prospects dim for a resumption of nuclear diplomacy between the two countries. In recent weeks, North Korea has hinted at lifting its moratorium on nuclear and long-range missile tests if the Trump administration fails to make substantial concessions in nuclear diplomacy before the year’s end.

Choe said Trump’s remarks “prompted the waves of hatred of our people against the U.S.” because as they showed “no courtesy when referring to the supreme leadership of dignity” of North Korea.

And to think that these two narcissistic megalomaniacs have the codes to launch nuclear tipped missiles.................
