The case to expel white supremacist Steve King from Congress

This is long overdue, but the racist Iowa Republican really deserves it.
FRANK DALE
NOV 14, 2018, 8:00 AM

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) should be expelled from Congress.

The noted white supremacist, who also happens to be a Republican congressman, makes no effort to hide his racism.

In addition to his very long history of offensive conduct, King follows Twitter accounts “belonging to unabashed white supremacists, including Blair Cottrell, a violent Australian activist who’s called for hanging a picture of Adolf Hitler in every classroom; Stefan Molyneux, a Canadian alt-right vlogger who thinks whites are more intelligent than blacks; and an anonymous Twitter user (with only 334 followers) using the handle @DiezNewAge, who regularly tweets out anti-Semitic and anti-black messages,” according to HuffPost.

With President Donald Trump sitting in the White House, King’s re-election to a ninth term in Congress last week was further proof that most Republicans don’t draw the line at racism, which has become a feature of the party rather than a bug.

Democrats, with their new House majority, could remove arguably the most vile American politician while giving the GOP an opportunity to save some dignity by starting proceedings to expel King from Congress.

Republican congressman sues to stop vote count, cites made-up provision of the Constitution

GOP lawsuit claims an imaginary constitutional provision prevents 22,805 ballots from being counted

Rep. Bruce Poliquin (R-ME), who is currently in a tight reelection fight against Democrat Jared Golden, filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday that would effectively toss out over twenty thousand ballots if he prevails.

There’s just one problem. His primary legal argument rests on a provision of the Constitution that does not actually exist.

In 2016, Maine’s voters approved a ballot initiative that institutes ranked choice voting in that state. Under this system, voters are asked to rank the candidates for a particular office in order, from their most preferred candidate to their least preferred candidate. If no one candidate wins a majority, ballots cast for the least popular candidate are then redistributed to second-choice candidates. And this redistribution continues until someone emerges with a majority.

Mueller seeking more details on Nigel Farage, key Russia inquiry target says

Source: The Guardian

Robert Mueller is seeking more information about Nigel Farage for his investigation into Russian interference in US politics, according to a target of the inquiry who expects to be criminally charged.

Jerome Corsi, a conservative author, said prosecutors working for Mueller questioned him about Farage, the key campaigner behind Britain’s vote to leave the European Union, two weeks ago in Washington.

Corsi said investigators for the special counsel also pressed him for information on Ted Malloch, a London-based American academic with ties to Farage, who informally advised Donald Trump and was interviewed by FBI agents earlier this year.

“They asked about both Nigel and Ted Malloch, I can affirm that they did,” Corsi told the Guardian on Tuesday. “But I’m really not going into detail because I respect the special counsel and the legal process.”

Mueller’s interest in Farage comes amid questions in the UK about whether Russia attempted to influence the June 2016 vote to leave the European Union, and Brexit’s most vocal political supporters.

Irish authorities investigate UFO sightings by commercial pilots

BA and Virgin pilots report seeing bright lights that disappeared at high speed

The Irish Aviation Authority is investigating after an unidentified flying object was sighted by pilots flying over Ireland.

On the morning of 9 November the pilot of British Airways flight BA94 from Montreal called air traffic control in Shannon to report seeing an object moving past her aircraft, and asked if there were any military exercises taking place off the west coast of Ireland.

“It was moving so fast,” she said. “It came up on our left-hand side and then rapidly veered to the north. It was a very bright light that disappeared at very high speed.”

According to a recording of the conversation by Airlive, a site for enthusiasts, the pilot was told there were no military exercises in the area. “There’s nothing showing on either primary or secondary [radar],” air traffic control said, according to the report.

Top Census Scientist Testifies That Adding Citizenship Question Was Not A Good Idea

Source: Talking Points Memo

NEW YORK – The top scientist of the Census Bureau testified Tuesday that he did not think it was a good idea to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census and that he and the other experts at the bureau recommended against adding the question.

The first hour and half of Census official John Abowd’s testimony in a federal trial in Manhattan focused on the various analyses the Census Bureau did to come to that assessment. The case is a consolidation of lawsuits brought against the Trump administration for adding the question.

Abowd is the only government official expected to take the stand during the trial in front of U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman. His questioning Tuesday was led by ACLU attorney Dale Ho.

Ho sought to undercut claims made by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who has oversight over the decennial census, in a March 2018 memo announcing the addition of the question that the Census Bureau had not provided “definitive, empirical support” for the belief that adding the citizenship question would reduce response rates.

Why Jeff Sessions' Final Act Could Have More Impact Than Expected

By Ian MacDougall ProPublica
November 13, 2018 1:40 pm
Just before he left, the departing attorney-general adopted a policy to limit the Justice Department’s ability to oversee abusive police departments. That same policy could also hamper the department’s role in environmental, voting-rights, and other cases.

Jeff Sessions hides emotion poorly — his face is reflexively expressive — and last Wednesday night, it betrayed a mixed set of sentiments as he stepped out of the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice Building in downtown Washington. He had the stunned appearance of a hostage emerging out of an underground prison for the first time in months. But for a moment, in the news-camera glare, another look flashed across his face: the impish grin of a man who knows he’d managed to leave a little surprise behind.

Earlier that day, Sessions had resigned as the head of the Justice Department at the request of President Donald Trump. But before he left the job, the soon-to-be former attorney general had some last-minute business to attend to. With a black-ink pen, he initialed, in an illegible scrawl, a document formalizing the terms of what will be one of his abiding legacies: a Justice Department disengaged from its role in investigating and reforming police departments that repeatedly violate the civil rights of the people they’re sworn to protect. Police reform had been a DOJ priority during the Obama administration, and that work played a significant role in the federal response to the deaths of black men at the hands of police in cities such as Ferguson, Missouri.

Sessions, however, had long opposed the federal police oversight and the consent decrees — long-term reform plans supervised and enforced by a federal judge — that defined DOJ’s approach during the Obama years. In his view, they undermine law enforcement and amount to improper federal meddling in state and local affairs. (This summer, I documented the human consequences of the dramatic extent to which Sessions and his deputies had scaled back federal police oversight.)

I want this asshole, to be brought back into the new Congress, at Oversight Committee and answer some questions, and then over at the Judicial Committee, and then Intelligence Committee ..................and then to be shown his tape on how he lied in front of the public and the committee and charged with perjury and every action he submitted to be implemented be annulled.........................

California's electric utilities under investigation again for starting deadly wildfires

New law could protect utility shareholders despite electric companies' suspected role in starting fires.
MARK HAND
NOV 13, 2018, 11:50 AM

California’s two largest electric utility companies are under investigation again for their role in starting major wildfires in the state. But the companies are probably less worried about how the devastating fires could impact their finances after state lawmakers passed legislation earlier this year to protect the companies and their shareholders from full financial liability.

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), already facing lawsuits and fines for its role in causing devastating wildfires in previous years, owns the transmission lines that may have caused the Camp Fire in Northern California, the deadliest wildfire in California history.

And in Southern California, state regulators are investigating the possible role played by Southern California Edison (SoCalEd) in the massive Woolsey Fire currently burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, California.

California lawmakers, however, are growing frustrated with electric utilities’ alleged role in the state’s wildfires. State Sen. Jerry Hill (D) is looking into legislation that would break up the state’s investor-owned utilities or turn them into public power utilities following reports about how equipment owned by PG&E and SoCalEd may have started the Camp and Woolsey fires, KQED reported Sunday.

Supreme Court to hear a subtle but terrifying threat to Obamacare

Life is scary when you can't trust judges to act within the law.

IAN MILLHISER
NOV 13, 2018, 1:04 PM

In a sensible world, Virginia House of Delegates v. Bethune-Hill would have nothing whatsoever to do with the Affordable Care Act. On its surface, Bethune-Hill is a racial gerrymandering case which, the Supreme Court announced on Tuesday, will be heard by the Court for the second time.

Yet Bethune-Hill also presents a difficult issue regarding when non-parties to a federal lawsuit may appeal lower court decisions to a higher authority. And this technical question could have tremendous implications for Obamacare. Depending on how the Supreme Court rules in Bethune-Hill, this seemingly irrelevant gerrymandering dispute could enable the Trump administration to collude with a highly partisan judge to shut down the Affordable Care Act in a bevy of red states.

Who can file an appeal?
Bethune-Hill challenges 12 of Virginia’s state legislative districts, alleging they are unlawful racial gerrymanders. This case was originally filed in 2014, and it’s been through several twists and turns since then. Before Tuesday, the most significant recent development was a lower court decision holding that 11 of these 12 districts are, indeed, unlawful. The lower court ordered Virginia’s legislature to draw new maps by October 30.

Significantly, Virginia’s Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring chose not to appeal that lower court order. Instead, it was the state’s Republican-controlled House of Delegates that sought to overturn the lower court’s decision. The House of Delegates are not a party to this suit, but they were granted “intervenor” status by the lower court — status that allowed them to defend the gerrymandered maps in that court.

-snip-

The Joke lawsuit

If hundreds of thousands of lives weren’t at stake in Texas v. United States, this lawsuit attacking Obamacare would be an absurdist joke. In Texas, a bloc of 20 Republican governors and state attorneys general claim that the entire Affordable Care Act must be struck down because Congress chose to repeal a single provision of the law.

-snip-

DOJ’s Lawlessness

Since the Texas case was filed at the beginning of this year, there have been three developments in this lawsuit worth noting here.

The first is that the Trump administration filed a brief arguing that the Texas plaintiffs should win a partial victory in this suit (that brief reportedly led at least one senior Justice Department attorney to resign in protest). The Trump administration argues that Judge O’Connor should repeal Obamacare’s protections for people with preexisting conditions.

I firmly believe that all of the judges being rammed through this congress need to be annulled if the traitor is indicted, for laundering money, tax evasion, or colluding with Russia , or whatever transpires, and that Don McGahn, needs to be brought in and questioned in public, about these judges, the Federalist Society and Judicial Watch ...................... a lot of these judges past and present are card signing members of these two organizations...............and that is scary.

And we need to take back the senate
